Today I explain my job in the Air Force! Which is a long awaited video that many have asked for so I finally decided to sit down and make a full length video explaining everything I can to you guys! My job is Aircraft Structural Maintenance in the United States Air Force. I do sheet metal repair on most of the United States Air Forces aircraft. I've currently been doing ASM on the F-15 C Model here at Kadena Air Force base. But I'm going to be PCSing to a new base in August to Nellis Air Force base and will be working on HH-60 Helicopters.

I did sheet metal for 20 years in the USAF and was stationed at Kadena early in my career. It was an awesome job and very important to keeping the aircraft flying. Miss it and would do it all over again.

Just found your video, this is an awesome way to explain what we actually do. Sheetmetal 83-92. Corrosion control was just being combined with us. Almost 30 years out for me, and your video brings on the memories. Nothing like removing stuck screws from a jet because the crew chief stripped em.
My dad was in maintenance when he was in the Air Force in the 80s. I'm not sure if he had the same job as you (he might have been in Tactical Aircraft Maintenance) but I still find it cool to be able to learn about what he might have done since he doesn't like to talk to me about his time in the Air Force. Thanks for making this video. It was both interesting and informative. I hope to join the military at some point and it's good to know in detail from someone who has experience with certain jobs to be aware of what I would be getting myself into. I love your gottlove videos and all of your Air Force videos! Thanks for being such a great person to watch.

I am retaining into this job from being a turboprop/turboshaft mechanic (that neve did my actual job)by choice. I am enjoying EVERYTHING so far. And it aligns with my hobbies. I cant wait to get back into the operational AF. Anything is better than being a crew chief on HH-60s when tech school never prepared you for it.
Hey, former Army 15G (Aircraft Structural Repair) here. Always wish I joined the AF and went for that MOS there. A lot of similarities except I worked on helo's. Chinooks, Apaches, Kiowas, etc. Thanks for the awesome video!
I go to this High school in NYC, called Aviation High school. I'm currently a junior. In my school we go over Aviation maintenance, such as sheet metal, Hydraulic systems, electrical systems, composite materials, NDT etc. Best thing is that if we pass all of our finals and jobs then we get an Airframe or power plant license from the FAA. all the stuff you went over I've basically done in my shop class. I'm planning on doing aviation maintenance in the military just still debating between Marines or Air force. keep up the great work, and thank you for serving our country.
Great job on this video.. I don't remember seeing a video job description of USAF Structural Repair before. I think you did an awesome job. I started my career in this same AFSC, at Mountain Home, and RAF Upper Heyford working on F-111's. The USAF was a real blessing to me, and provided me with a solid career that I now do for Alaska Airlines. It's awesome that you are sharing your experience with others so that they can make more educated decisions on their future. Thanks for what you do.

Cant wait to see this whole video, Im pretty sad it wasn't released earlier because I had to write an essay on a profession that had to be interview style and I had decided I would interview you via email but assumed you were busy. Gotta say I regret not interviewing you since you're one of my favorite Air Force Active's out on TH-cam. Maybe a video on how one becomes an NCO and how long it takes to get to Staff or Technical Sergeant when one has a minimum of 45 college credits or just how the process works overall. I would also like to see your recommendations on careers in each field, General, Mechanical, Electrical and Administrative. Which you think offers the best jobs in your opinion and the jobs you would recommend in that field of work. Hope to hear from you soon and enjoy your upcoming vacation! Air Power!

I just got Aircraft Structural Maintenance! I think I’ll enjoy it! Yea the hours might be long depending on where I get based at, but I think this job will be good for me. Every job is what you make it. I have a friend who got 2a7x3 as well.
I've been watching for 6 months or so and I am happy to see a detailed job description. I'm going to BMT soon and in tech school learning Helicopter Tiltorotor Maintenance and there is no good videos on it. Wish there was. Keep it up, love the videos.

By the way, FOD checks are to ensure that rocks aren't in the tires before you drive on the flight line. If rocks end up on the flight line, an engine might suck it up and then "FOD out" the engine. Basically, a rock can be sucked up and hit the turbine blades, chipping the blade, and continuing into the engine, hitting other blades, knocking loose other chips (which then become FOD themselves) and essentially destroying an engine. So, rocks are bad, mkay

Yoooo!! Kyle... I have been working at Beale sine 2017 and I was so happy to get orders to Osan. I haven't heard of one person that wanted to come to Beale. Its crazy to think that it was your #2 choice. I believe that is what you said. That's insane man. I'm happy for you that you got out, but I think it could have been really neat to work together.
I worked in AGE 72-76 . It seemed that I was always taking panels and doors to the sheet metal shop . I really appreciate the sheet metal shop .
As a 15R in the US Army, part of my job is to learn your job and let shops(airframe/engine/etc.) sit in their office and handle bigger issues like fasteners and such.

Im 15yo and Im thinking abt joining the AF and this job is literally my dream job (or any other maintenance type job in the AF)
9 years AF. I wanted to do anything on planes. Well I went open mechanical. Ok cool. They sent me DDA for Base Maint., Heavy Equipment mechanic. I was upset. Then when I was stationed in Germany I saw you guys working outside working on planes in the elements as I drove by, ha ha you suckers. I loved working in a warm shop, music, coffee. We worked on anything with hydraulics. I have worked refueling maint., fire trucks, MB2's, K loaders, cranes all heavy stuff to dump trucks, John Deere loaders, tractors, and lawn mowers. We did not touch GP vehicles like your mobile maint trucks, cars and all the "normal" vehicles. Loved my job.
I'm in your shoes at the moment, I had several jobs in mind and found out I'm color deficient and now disqualified from them. This video helped me so much and I'm glad to see I'm not alone, it really makes me feel better. I'm really glad you made this video so I can have an in depth description of this job. How do you like your job?
Retired maintainer here. Structural folks are in steady demand by aircraft manufacturers because it's a small career field compared to crew chiefs and engine troops. Since you have considerable skate time get as much additional training as possible, and you would benefit from taking welding and machine shop courses at local community colleges.

I'm a 20 year old with two years of factory experience (and I fucking hate everything about my job) that's considering joining the Air Force. So I think I have a feel for what you're saying here about your job. It doesn't seem too bad, honestly a job like that looks like something that would require either years of experience, or at least an associates degree, would you try to get a job like that in the civilian world. It's awesome that the Air Force provides you with this kind of work experience.
Don't bother. Your factory job is the same as this, just in a different light. You'll be bored with this soon enough. And the training isn't that great (It is if you're a super fast learner).

It's funny man, I was in while ASM and Composite were the same career. They broke it apart about half way through my enlistment, and I thought it was the stupidest thing. We also started off that stupid switch to the "Toughbook" T.O.s, or as I called them, "My drill stop".

Hey Kyle! I know this comment might get overlooked, but for jobs like yours, (loadmaster and some other ones) Are you assigned your aircraft? or do you get to pick which one you want to work one? I'm about to enlist and i really want to go to Mildenhall/Lakenheath, and i'll take any job that could get me there. But i heard if i go loadmaster, I can't go there unless my plane is based there. I hope this makes sense. Thank you for all your videos!!!!!!!

After you quit the Air Force there's plenty of aircraft jobs you can go work for like Boeing, Cessna, lawkheed etc

I was a Loadmaster on the C-141. Single guy, but I was 17 when I joined. I went to the reserves,on active duty status, a few years after my discharge. By then, I was married with a kid on the way.
It doesn't work, so, sadly, I had to leave
Even as an E-2, I was earning flight pay, pay for meals instead of the chow hall, combat pay ( Vietnam was on when I was in) and the tax exemption for being in a combat zone.
You see the world and have a job with a great amount of responsibility.
Honestly, there was no market for my skills when I got out.
Knowing what you know now, and after seeing all the other jobs etc.. what would you have chosen to instead? Thanks for your time 👊

Graduated a little over 2 months ago. NASP is phenomenal. You'll have a great time there especially with a beach nearby and summer coming soon.
Also, what's your opinion on metals technician? I'm flying a desk and want to cross train. I'm sick of staring at a screen for 12 hours a day and losing track of the days. I'm mechanically and electronically inclined. So if I can't get EOD, maintenance is my way to go. Welding and machining is something I'm interested in.
I hate fiber glass with every fiber of my being.

What job would you change to if you could?
I used to play with F-16´s and F-117´s toys when I was a child. Also fighter pilot video games. I have a degree in Architecture. I don´t enjoy my career at all. Most jobs are temporary so its like being unemployed forever. I´m joining the Air Force to follow childhood dreams, I´m leaning towards Tactical Aircraft Maintenance.

I wanna be a mechanic. I've looked into jobs in the air force and since I've found your channel I've narrowed what I wanna do to asm and ground vehicle maintenance. When I think about it like, I wanna work on cars, but when will I ever get the chance to work on jets, helicopters, etc again

Enlisted recently in the reserves for this job. Got a 15000$ bonus and am going in as an E3 after tech school. Hoping I enjoy it, but if I dont it's only one weekend a month and 2 weeks a year.

@@summitxbl8576 I moved to AZ and chamged to Luke AFB two weeks before i shipped out and they changed me to LO ASM (2A7X5). I start tech school June 3. From what Ive seen and heard both are good jobs, but LO paints more and regular ASM deals more with sheet metal working. I mainly joined to go to college so I wasn't too worried about what my job was going to be. Ask around about and look into Air Reserve Technician positions.

Kyle, I know as of now you are checked out so to speak of re-enlisting....however since you are going to Nellis and going to be working on the Pavehawks for PJ's do you think it might change your mind? From what I have heard it is a LOT better shop to work for. Would you be able to switch to Crew Chief for the Pavehawks?

I guess no supplies on truck. Can you radio back for parts you need and save you trying to find yourself. Are there no pneu or hydro people on the line to remove part? Can you explain why color blindness kept you out A/V, unless you had fix the equipment.
Hey Kyle, is the AF in demand for your job? I really want a high chance of getting in with it. I'm making my dream sheet currently. I also heard that going open mechanical makes it easier to receive this job because the AF knows that your dedicated.

So I know you got Nellis as your "Follow On" congratulations by the way. What would happen with your AFSC if you were to get stationed at Luke AFB (Glendale, AZ) where they are transitioning from F16's to F35's?

This is off subject but, I was wondering if you knew if speaking some Japanese would increase the chances of getting stationed in Japan? I have been considering joining the Air Force for a while now and speak a little Japanese. Also are there jobs that would more likely get me stationed in Japan or is it just based on what is available at the time when I would be getting assigned at a base?

Do i get to choose the Aircraft I wanna work on? Like i can work specifically on fighter jets,or attack helicopters,or bombers? and if so can i go a step further and work on a specific aircraft in that category? like a hornet fighter jet for example if I choose fighters? maybe for attack helicopters ? or a b52 spirit or a Lancer if i go with bombers?

I know this isn't CAF but I've been working civil for almost a year and a half, structural engineer, in a heavy maintenance hangar. I was just wondering since I am a smoker, what the breaks they give you are like if any? I was thinking about applying for the Canadian Air Force, but I'm finding it hard to break free from the flight benefits I'm getting at the moment, and some other simple reasons.

This is the job that I want. I want to learn Aircraft maintenance however I do not want to work on electricity (I'm not good at it and I don't like it). I think this job will actually be a good fit for me as I plan to do it in the civi world at some point anyway. If anybody has any tips I would really love to hear them.

How did you study for the mechanical area of the ASVAB? And was it hard? Coming into this area of work with no mechanical experience can be a little intimidating.
I didn’t study at all and I got a 51 in mechanical on practice and 52 on real. I am not interested at all in fixing things. I do not want a job like this lol

+kingdaniel4195 I believe he went to MEPS and it DQ'd him from a lot so he just made a list of what he qualified for, and aircraft SM was one of them and he ended up getting it.
I am informed that the nature of this job is that it entails more hours of working outdoors, what are some of the heatstress management policies that have been put into place by the airforce so as to enable its employees to work in a conducive environment during summer???
