Back in the 80's, when I was in the USAF, there was no metals tech. We had separate shops (weld and machine shops). I was afsc 427x4, Metals Processing Specialist (aircraft welder). Worked F-111 jets in England. We welded tons of engine parts for those birds. When I was on AWACS, not so much. It just depends on your base.
I wish we had done machining as well. I spent about 12 years in civilian life as a CNC machinist, but am back to welding again. Both careers in the AF will prepare you well for employment in civilian life. The work will be much different, in general, but the training will make the transition much easier. Right now, the company I work for cannot find enough qualified welders. Just fyi.

It's nice to see people being so enthusiastic about their job. I've seen plenty of interview videos where they seemed pretty "meh" about everything. It's informative sure, but it just makes me lose interest in the job.
Still getting into the AF, but I want a job where I feel like what I do matters. Best job I had was at an independent pharmacy. I would compound the medications in the back, in addition to normal retail pharmacy stuff. Need a specialized pain cream for your chronic back issues? Hormones out of whack making you crazy? Having problems getting or staying pregnant? Thyroid not functioning? I made such a wide array of compound medications, and it felt great to know that what I was doing with my own two hands was having such a positive impact on people's lives. This man believes his job matters and loves what he does, and that's an amazing feeling!

Machining doesn't take much beyond simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. And obviously you will have a calculator on you. I don't know why they are saying that there's a lot of geometry. I've been machining full time for over four years at two different shops and only had to do the occasional geometry; mostly Pythagorean theorem.

@@dominicanguy9117 I've RARELY had to do mathematics beyond what a simple calculator can do and, well, that's what the calculator is for. And while the math is easy and quick with a calculator, you do have to do simple equations very often to figure out your machine parameters and make sure you are making parts correctly. Honestly, I'm not big into math either, but I love machining and the numbers don't bother me. The math you use is repetitive and you will memorize it quick.
