    One of my instructors said, "99.9% accuracy at Chicago O'Hare Airport means you had 4 mid air collisions. We must be perfect." It really put it into perspective for me.

    • @matthewbrown4482
      @matthewbrown4482 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It only takes one small mistake. One small missed call or incorrect instruction can snowball into something big. Large airports like O'hare have such high traffic volume that the 99.9 might be accurate. But our entire job is to provide safe and expeditious services for aircraft. If you have even 1 collision that is definitively your fault, you're out a job.

    I'm an Air Traffic Controller at Travis AFB, California. 1C151. It's interesting to see other people's perspective on Air Traffic in the Military. One thing I noticed tho, the Air Force changed the rules. You no longer need a 6 year contract to do Air Traffic in the Air Force. I am currently 2 years into my 4 year contract. I am getting closer and closer everyday to Civilian Air Traffic. That's where the prize is $$$

      What is the average entry salary of a civilian ATC, puting in mind the job seeker has a 4-6 years military ATC experience?
      What asvab general score is needed to qualify for this job?

      Ayo Flee late, but I’ve been a controller for 2 years now. He mentions crew rest, but doesn’t go into detail. Mandatory crew rest is determined by the FAA. You’re not allowed to work more than 8 hours in position actively working traffic and you’re not allowed to be at work for more than 10 hours. Nothing trumps that rule. Not even your commander for commanders calls. You also have to have at least 12 hours between shifts and aren’t allowed to work more than 6 days in a row without a 24 hour rest period. Again, nothing can trump that. It’s unique in that your work is only done in position. When you’re “unplugged” (out of position) you’re done. Can’t bring it home with you so you go home and enjoy your rest. It’s honestly amazing. No other job in the Air Force does that that I know of. Also, he mention washing out in training. Air traffic control is different in that you can wash out at *any* point in your career. I’ve seen people that have had their ratings for 5 years washout and I’ve even heard of master sergeants and senior master sergeants get washed out one of my sup’s. You have to always stay current, always learn. There’s so much information to know and learn and apply that it can be daunting. Tech school is more of a stress test to see if you can handle air traffic and think under stress. A lot of people just aren’t cut out for it. It’s nothing personal, doesn’t mean you’re a failure, but this job requires a certain type of person to do. If you chose it best of luck, and if you make it, have a fun career! Best job in the Air Force. (Or if you get out, east money. Denver tower is paying $169,000 a year *base* salary right now)

    Six years for ATC is a bit much but there is a FAA job waiting for you to slide right in to. Keesler 1956 they need an ATC guy in Korea now so I was put on a plane full of Navy Officers and flown to Toyko via Hawaii, then one to Seoul, Korea, hitched a bumpy ride to K-55 F-86F fight base at Osan. What a year. One I'll never forget. Every day we expected a million NVA to overrun the base.

    If you were simply planning on doing your time and getting out for a Civilian job as an air traffic controller, even if you were allowed to take a 4 year contract, you would STILL want the 6 year contract simply because the FCC really wants people that were not trained through their standard civilian training program to have 4 to 5 years of experience already. So just be default you would almost always want to do the 6 year contract so you can get that full 4 to 5 years of experience.

I’m going into ATC and on the fence about 4 year or 6 year contract. So if this is in-fact true, then I will choose a 6 year contract. The validation will truly help, thank you!

      Yup. I’ve only heard bad about this job🙄… and suicidal rates are highest on this job bc of how dependent pilots are to safely land with how many ever ppl they have on the plane/ the value of that plane 😐… and then you’re screwed if something bad happened.
      I personally would never want this job lol nd i hope ppl know this going into this job

    How is the skill level determined? Is that with your ASVAB or do you start with one?

    • @matthewbrown4482
      @matthewbrown4482 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Skill levels are on a scale 1-3-5-7-9. 1 are untrained. People at BMT and tech school students. 3 levels are apprentices who are in OJT. 5 are journymen. 7 are like supervisors. 9s are administrative. There's more info out there somewhere. Hope this helps.

    I'm on the fence, should I go for ATC, Airfield management or Contracting? I was leaning ATC but I found out if you don't got to school for it by 32 you can't join. So I feel it'll be too late for a civilian job

    • @ajrhodes6348
      @ajrhodes6348 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      May be to late for you but unless you're well educated in what youre getting yourself into and think you can handle it without a doubt in your mind In would personally recomend contracting. Im a controller now but a friend of mine who washedout and went contracting is making just as much money as ATC would on the civilian side and living a much more stressfree life.

    • @matthewbrown4482
      @matthewbrown4482 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ATC is better than AF management. The FAA does allow an age waiver for controllers from the airforce. I joined at 18. If i stay in the AF for 20 years and retire i can still get picked up at 38 with the FAA or DoD and do another 20 years.

    • @MS2MAN

      if you didn't sign for the job I don't think your locked into it I'd ask to spend to the ncoic or ask your recruiter again if that's the case

    • @hellseagle21
      @hellseagle21 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be able to change the job. Even if you've signed a contract it is not active until you actually set foot at BMT. Basically your recruiter would have the option to get you a new job or risk having you walk away since they can't force you to take a job or join.

    • @selsahmwishen2981

      Yes it is possible.
      However as a greencard holder, you will have to change your greencard status from a legal immigrant to a citizen.
      This job is under officer training category and for one to qualify for it; he or she needs to be a citizen.

    Does anyone know how often 1C1X1 jobs drop to the recruiters? I was fortunate to score extremely well on the Asvab and ATC tests at the age of 24, so i'd like to get a job contract secured before BMT instead of rolling the dice with an Open General Contract while there.

    • @matthewbrown4482
      @matthewbrown4482 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Air traffic is somewhat less common than most other jobs. But if you're recruiter has a good job pick cycle they can try to get you what you want. But at the end of the day its what the airforce needs.
