Mark's instructional video, "KIRBY, replacing the fan" is the only one out of numerous others that actually shows the correct assembly of the rubber seal & the flanged spacer. While a most instructor videos mentioned installing the seal & flanged spacer, they didn't explain the correct assembly. Thank you Mark Miller for a thorough instructional video.
Thank You Mark! The wife and I replaced the fan together. She ran the video while I did the labor. It is very important that you do the job in sequence just as you showed us in the video, and also keep track of where the screws go. I saved about $55.00 by doing the job ourselves versus taking it to the local repair shop. Thanks again!
Just wanted to say Thank you! Received the parts from Amazon for a few bucks, a 3 dollar tube of silicone, and I'm back in business. Saved me a bunch of money!
Best, best, best video! I wish everyone who posts on TH-cam would take a lesson! Stationary camera, concise and clear instructions, no extra/unnecessary chat. Really well done. I will be replacing my fan as soon as it comes in the mail. Thank you!
Just an FYI... I just replaced the fan on my Kirby using your method. I noticed that there are a couple flats milled on the back end of the motor shaft. I used an open end wrench on these flats to keep the motor from turning while installing the belt spindle. You have to remove the forward/reverse drive assembly to get at these flats, but it's pretty easy to remove it.
I can see you learned this the best way, by doing. I am wondering about the screw sizes on these machines. My G4, age unknown, has M4 x 0.8 pitch screws. The standard for M4 pitch is 0.7 so finding the right screw size if you drop one will be very difficult. I am a 50 year toolmaker and I don't even have a tap that size. They may be available from UK or Europe. I can't find them anywhere.
Good video. Love it. I'm gonna put a new fan on my gen three next week. I got it at a years sale for 28 bucks two years. Tec drive and all work great. Have all the attachments and the caddy. Good deal you think? It had one blade missing off the fan and it needs a new bulb that's all. We threw the Dyson and the Hoover in the trash. It's unreal how great these vacuums really are!
Great video, I got all the way down to removing the shaft I inserted a nail and turned to the right while holding the fan stationary but the shaft never loosens up - it turns kind of stifly while I hold the fan but never actually comes off. Any advice? Thanks
Thanks for showing the washer sequence, mine didn't have the plastic one when i took it apart, maybe it wore away? Anyhow, got mine replaced / working!
When you learn as you go, sometimes it's better to do it that way. Have had other fix up jobs around but when trying to make videos of them they were just too messed up. And some things just don't lend themselves well to do overs. Thanks for the comment. Mark
Jenn Levanger I used some black silicone sink caulk that I had around. But Good vac recommends a clear 100% silicone adhesive. Here is a link to what they sell. Should give you an idea of what to use; www.goodvac.com/Clear_100_Silicone_Adhesive_2_5oz_Tube_p/ln-207.htm
That's a good deal, bud, but there is also another way to repair the fan without breaking the seal: go through the rear of the machine. You have to remove the transmission in order to do so.
To be honest, it is. If you don't mind resealing the case yourself, the old fashioned way is fine. All of the older models require you to break the seal, but the Generation models can be done from the back. I own a G7 Diamond Edition, a 1969 Dual Sanitronic, a 519 (1960) and an early 500 series from around 1949.
Yes but im nervous to go into the back. Seems more steps to take apart that way to access the fan.. id be afraid id mess up something trying it in the back. Im not experienced or skilled enough yet whereas goung through the front this way i feel i can try doing it.
100% silicone sealer. Check out this link to get an idea. Should be able to find it at most hardware or Home Depot etc... stores. www.goodvac.com/Clear_100_Silicone_Adhesive_2_5oz_Tube_p/ln-207.htm
Just for the comments and Subscribing Yes it is. It's a G4, same model that I have in the video. One for upstairs and one for downstairs. Got the second one from my dad, salesman had talked him into buying it , after using it for a while he decided it was too heavy for him (has ALS). Gave it to me in exchange for some work he needed done.
Oh the kirbys are nice vacuums aren't they but its a shame about the sales techniques when it comes to sell them. I have 4 Kirby's: Kirby Heritage £20 Kirby Legend 2 £3.50 Kirby Generation 3 £35 Kirby Sentria £35
What sealer did you use? Great video. Well explained step by step, thankyou. Edit: i see in another comment you used black sink caulk sealer but good vac recommends 100 percent silicone sealer.
I used some stuff I had on hand. Black silicone sealer that I had used around the kitchen sink (black sink). Here is what is recommended by the site in my notes under the video. www.goodvac.com/Clear_100_Silicone_Adhesive_2_5oz_Tube_p/ln-207.htm You can probably get it or something comparable at any big store like Home Depot or a hardware store. Whoops!! Only read the first part of your comment that came in the email, missed the second part where you figured it out;>) Also see you are one of the few people who actually do check out others' comments below the video, kudos to you.
If they make one for it. But I haven't seen one. The plastic one is pretty good and over all holds up for a long time, unless you somehow run something in there that is too heavy.
Don't know what happened to your other comment. disappeared . But here is the answer to the question; Skip to 7:25 in the video, that may be able to help you. Or check out the steps shown here: www.goodvac.com/kb_results.asp?ID=17 has some extra things that may help.
It is in the video how to do it. Otherwise check in my notes under the video. Click the "SHOW MORE" and you will find a link to the extra steps needed. Or here is that link; th-cam.com/users/redirect?event=video_description&v=KOKnedKf-xE&redir_token=VvfBP1jRCNjnKqFaRGxcoFeqUuZ8MTU0MjY4NzIzMUAxNTQyNjAwODMx&q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.goodvac.com%2Fkb_results.asp%3FID%3D17 good luck.
Watched the videi to replace the fan. Every thing went fine, until I got to the fan shaft. I turned this thing for over 1 hour, and it still will not come off. I try tapping it with a hammer, prying, breaking the fan blade, guess what, Nothing. That shaft is not coming off. What can I do?
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, you may have already figured it out. I assume you are talking about the Belt Shaft, not the Fan Shaft? Did you turn the shaft the correct way? It unscrews clockwise, ( see video at 4:48-->)(just click on the times here and it should take you right to the spot) which is just the opposite of most other things, like nuts and bolts. Latter in the video at 7:35--> I show an alternative method to keep the Motor shaft from turning while you try to remove the Belt shaft. You may have to do that. Also you may need to do that when you put on the new belt shaft to snug it up. Using some penetrating oil if you can get it on the motor shaft where it attaches to the belt shaft would be worth a try. The last way to loosen it up, and I don't recommend it here but it does sometimes work on tight bolts, is to heat it with a small torch. But on the vacuum it would probably do more damage than not. Don't do that in the house. p.s. wis.gardener is my other channel. So I am the same guy that made this video.
ELVISRN1I had to cut the fan of at the shaft. Then the belt shaft cam right off with my fingers. It did not want to come off any other way. GREAT VIDEO. My job is done and the kirby works and sounds correct. THANKS AGAIN!
Hi Coco. Sorry I didn't see your question sooner. Did you get it off? I take it your talking about the step at 5:35 in the video? My guess is that maybe the rubber washer ,over time, fused the spacer to the shaft or where it seats on the seal. Wish I could help you more, if it was me I would use some force and careful prying at the thing. But you'd have to be carful not to break anything. Did you try some penetrating oil on it? Liquid wrench is one and most hardware stores would have it. Or amazon has it; www.amazon.com/Liquid-Wrench-L106-Penetrating-Oil/dp/B00200MR8Q/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=foxcrossing-20&linkId=d06182309a0bab906953270b961fc215
Excuse, me sir but, you have a burnt ,out lightbulb in your Kirby vacuum cleaner. Take, the old bulb, to the store, and show them What, you are looking for.
Got a whole set of T's now, and then some. Even got me 2 sets of "Security" tips. The ones with the hole in the middle of the tip, for those manufacturers that like to frustrate you when you find out you can't use a regular T screwdriver.

Thank you for posting this video. By following your directions, we were able to fix our G4 with no issues. :) Thanks again!
Easy to do. Making the video come together was more of a problem than the Kirby repair :>)

Looking for the link you referred to if you can't get the belt shaft off. We can't get ours off but can't find your link for the alternative

ronerx Thank you for the comment. I'm happy to know the video helped out.
Thanks for the video. Taking it apart after you had already fixed it. Good job!

Agree...Thanks again. I am waiting for my fan to fix mine. :)
What did you use for the seal? I couldn't tell what that was.

May I recommend purchasing some zoomspout turbine oil and oiling up the bearings on the motor.
Thank you so much. We got it fixed and it works great!!!

We got 2 Kirby's (one upstairs and one downstairs) If the other fan needs replacing, maybe I'll try this. Sounds like more work though.

Good Video...Just ordered my kit and expecting this to be a easy fix. Haven't used it since the blade breaking so I'm hoping just a swap out.......:)
Is that a kirby in the background when you're putting the fan back on? And what Kirby is it?
Just for the comments and Subscribing Yes it is. It's a G4, same model that I have in the video. One for upstairs and one for downstairs. Can you install a metal fan instead of a plastic one I really don't know
If they make one for it. But I haven't seen one. The plastic one is pretty good and over all holds up for a long time, unless you somehow run something in there that is too heavy.
