Hi Ken, The beatbox community has been pushing the artform in every direction and gene, show-go and many others have been some of the most exciting artists we would love to show to the vocal world. if you would like, we can explain each sound you’ve been listening to from all of the beatbox videos you have seen so far.
Hope you will look at Den’s wildcard next for vocal techniques. They’ll be competing at the end of October so we’ll see them performing on stage soon. Unfortunately Show-Go had to drop out for scheduling reasons, though he uploaded a new song on his channel “You’re Gone” which is great if you want to hear more from him.
That bass he does is called lip oscillation, it where you push air out the lips to make a vibration or pitch. You also try to speak a pitch through it, like what he did using falsetto. The other was a liproll where he breaths in using the side of the lips and it vibrates to create a sound, I believe he is making a pitch inwards as he does the liproll to create such sound. Other than that, love your reactions, your amazing❤, can you react to vocodah levels pls?
Especially since it was written and created by Gene Shinozaki and originally performed by him and his tag team partner. Den covered it and did it wonderfully.
I look at a lot of reactions for beatbox videos. The reaction I love the most are like yours, from people who are not beatboxers, you give a différent knowledge throughout your analysis. But if you ever want more « beatbox vocabulary » I could help you a bit :) What Gene is doing with the lip buzz combined with his voice is called « lip oscillation bass ». He makes it sound like a polyphonic technic because he does a 3rd or 5th or 8th note with the actual lip buzz compared to his trigger voice (here it’s head voice most of the time). That’s why it is so in tune. During the drop, he’s changing through head voice (falsetto), then lip oscillation, then chest voice… etc… and he started the drop with another vocal technique named vibration bass. Vibration bass is a technique where you use « growl », called throat bass in beatbox community, and you layer it with a much more deep vibration that does a sub-harmonica on top of the first technique. I guess the vibration added is sort of a « fry » coming from the false chords. Then vibrating at the same time as the « true » chords it makes the vibration bass sound like this !

I highly recommend you check out Den's GBB21 Wildcard named "Feel it still" . It contains some extremely interesting vocal techniques as well as vocal basses (inward bass, chest bass etc). It is definitely one to hear!
I know it's an older video, but you should check out Indicator - I'm an Alien. He uses a technique called alien bass which he describes as using two sub harmonic notes to produce a third and it's absolutely mind blowing
most beatboxers can do harmonies an octave higher or lower from their voice with their lip oscillation, but gene is using fifths, thirds, idk what else. to be able to control 2 pitch at once is just on another level. he's a musical genius.

Very good video! At 2:54 when you raise your posture it resonates so much with me. I have the exact same reaction at this part.. Gene leaves us in such a beautiful and surprising suspension it's unbelievable. Metamorphosis is one of the most beautiful beatbox pieces i've ever heard, it's one of those gems i will always come back to. Also, check out another beatboxer called Zekka. His wildcard video and his rounds for the "SBX Kickback Battle" were so good.
This was one of my favorite submissions this year. Maybe no. 1 for me. The beatboxing and his vocal performance especially was so, so on point and impressive. Edit: love the standup bass in the background btw

Ken, you definitely have to check the showcase of MB14 at La Cup. He’s the best pure vocal looper on the planet !! No effects just some reverb from time to time. Mind blowing !!
I would say the level is def the highest it’s been! There’s been a shift towards more “musical” beatboxing (as shown by many of the GBB Wildcard videos you’ve been reacting to). Polyphonic voices and sounds are super awesome and a lot of beatboxers are adding those sounds/techniques into their arsenal! Enjoying the videos!
this was actually an enjoyable and refreshing reaction from someone in the vocal world, so thank you for that. something that might be incredibly easy to overlook about gene's incredible runs, is the fact that he alternates each note between an inward and an outward voice, creating the duality between a very light inward tone and a very full and rich outward tone. at this point, his inward singing voice might just be better than most people's outward singing voice. i'm not quite sure how he manages to do this so flawlessly, or even how its logistically possible. i just live inside of the world the music creates. hopefully that explains why what he's doing is so magical. also, that last note with suspended falsetto is not actually polyphonic technique, but a falsetto note layered over a lip oscillation to create the bassy undertone. gene likes to pair these with thirds and fifths instead of the usual octaving that most beatboxers will do, giving him a unique texture whenever he does it. peace love and noise
The low tone on the last note is actually a subharmonic produced from the voice and lip buzz. David Larson mentions that technique in one of his videos about Polyphonic techniques.

Yes. Notice the different bass sounds done with the lips both inward and outward are pitched (and perfectly by the way). Which allows him to create polyphony by utilizing his voice simultaneously as the tones created by his lips.

The "lip trill" you're asking about is simply called "outward lip oscillation". However, doing it to Gene's level of expertise takes years. As a matter of fact, he has arguably the best vocalized lip oscillation on earth.
I would really like to hear your opinion on Spiderhorse-Searching(Beatbox Remix)| Into the Den#1. In my opinion, 2021 for beatboxers are quite good tbh. There is a lot of exciting stuff coming out from the loopstations also there is a big competition hold this year and old and new faces are facing against each other can't wait til that happens.
To add on to what others have said a out Gene's lip bass techniques, it's very similar to the embouchure used for brass instruments. I played trumpet and it's significantly different (mainly lower) but certainly the higher bass notes are almost exactly like my experience playing euphonium. Hopefully this helps explain why it's so controllable.
I believe it's called polyphonic lip oscillation. Takes a lot of practice to produce a wanted pitch with the vibration of your lips, and it takes even more concentration to separate the pitch from what you're producing with your vocal chords. It's crazy how he harmonizes with himself in real time!
I would really appreciate it if you check out Den's wildcard for GBB 2021 because even though it wasn't in the top 7, he deserves so much more attention for his vocal transitions.
You should see Stitch's widlcard "Feels Like Nothing".He is a great singer in his own right, knows double voice and is a heavy polyphonic user. He has a secret technique nobody else knows how to do or how he does it, the "616". WEDEDE
