I really hear this song. To me, it means all those years spent wondering what my "true calling" in life was, and not having figured it out. I always knew I was talented in many ways, but I never could break away from doubt and fear to pursue any of my dreams. If I could give any advice, it would be to not let fear rule you. Don't let self-doubt prevent you from taking the leap. A man without ambition is like a bird flying in a circle.
Thanks Jimmy for the songs of the seas for all these years. I always felt more comfortable on water than land and regret the opportunity to sail from California to Virginia that I did not take. But I'm grateful to my uncle for the times we spent in the Gulf of Florida. Priceless time for me.
You know what is amazing about Jimmy, he is still in his prime!!! His voice hasn't even withered a tad over the years. This performance is amazing! There is a mood Jimmy sets in his music that no one else can set!
great song, friend passed away and we played this at his funeral... this was his song ... RIP. Can't here this song now without shedding one for em...he was only 20 years of age!
This is my #1 favourite Jimmy song. Makes me cry at the beginning but I LOVE this song. We saw 2 concerts last summer - back to back weekends!! Doesn't get much better than that!
yeah your comment brought tears to my eyes too. It reminded me of my father. Though he wasn't a big buffett fan, he went to buffett concerts with us. He passed awaya few years ago when I was 19. I still think of him everyday. Thanks for your comment.
Parrotisla thank the Good Lord that you have those memories of your father to cherish. I'm sure he was a wonderful man...many millions of us do not have that...but my children will...the cycle stops NOW..
Out of all of the versions of this I have heard which have been many, I just think this is the best all around. Great guitars and uke interplay. Jimmy is right there in the pocket of it all. Just totally a moving rendition . Thanks for posting it!
Jimmy Buffett is one of the best there is. I saw him live a few years ago. 20,000+ just having a huge party. There are few things better in this world than going to a buffett concert. I want to go again badly.
your comment brought tears to my eyes its a great memory your dad left u with,I think he would luv that this song brings him back to life when u listen to it. my family is from South Fl This song brings fond memories (tears flowing)it reminds me of my bro who passed away 23 yrs ago. he never got to see 40 he was "an under 40 victim of fate" I love the memories this song brings;my bro's fav. I can see my bro at a concert my family all went to in 81'its a great memory! Thaks for reminding me!
I believe this song reminds everybody of there father thats passed and loved fishing on the coast. Thats what it reminds me of, me and dad. Miss you dad...R.I.P
I met Jimmy in the 60ths bought him a drink,he came down after his gig and bough me a drink.best coolest time..St.Arminds key Sarasota..been a fan every since..another Pirate
I am the pirate lookin at fifty - oh shit! grew up with jimmy. Been fishin and gettin crazy all over the carribean for many years. This man is truly an artist. I have studied his lyrics, play his music and personally feel he is among the best. Rock on ya all!
Grew up on two islands over 40 years Passed out a lot of times and had to look around when I woke to see where I was Sometimes took longer than others LOL! Still cry every time I hear this song.Twelve years past 40 Still a pirate till I die
i was at this show...tailgating from 11am on...and despite the miserable heat all day, it was amazing! I'm 24 with a 22 year old brother and buffett concerts are the only recreational thing my family actually enjoys doing together. Theres nothing like doing an ice luge with your mom!
My favorite, being a Capt and on the other side of Forty, I resemble this song. We love Jimmy and go to at least one concert a year...Saw him in Frisco, Tx this year, was worth every penny we spent to get out there from Daytona Beach. Its always so much fun...takes me back about twenty years. Love all the tailgate parties, the people out there were awesome.....Thanks For Hangin in There all these years. You never know we may be in Vegas for the last concert this year.
every word in this song brings back tumultuous feelings, lol... Jimmy rocks!!!! he's THE man. I have loved him since I was in High School in Manassas @ Osborn High School in the early '70's ..... then I moved to Florida, seen him a few times, rock on Jimmy!!!!
I had the pleasure of seeing Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band at the Fox theater in St. Louis from the First Row. Best seats for the best time I think I've ever had at a concert. Sure, had 19th row for Zeppelin, within 10-20 rows for the Stones. Many many good concerts and festivals, but when you have Jimmy Buffett right in from of you, if that's not fun, you just don't know fun when it's staring you in the face. Rock on Parrot Heads eveeywhere.
They played this at my dads funeral today, he grew up with Jimmy in Mobile Alabama and then were later neighbors again in Gulf Shores Alabama were most kids from Mobile spend their summers, it is the beach and area that inspired so many of his great songs, any real Parrothead fan should visit Gulf Shores where he lives and his sister owns Lulus Bar on the beach where he regularly sings for FREE for us locals.
At 45 I have lived an adventurous and very interesting life, often on the edge, and I can often relate to Buffet songs. Especially pissing the money away and the younger women....seems those two go hand in hand.
I have been seeing Jimmy since before he had a recording contract. He used to live with Jerry Jeff in Houston across the street from Townes Van Zandt. He has only gotten better with the years. He has never failed to deliver. "Gotta go fishin', gotta stop wishin', Down to rock bottom again." "My occupational hazard is my occupation is just not around." Damn, the guy can turn a line.
This song always pops into my head when I hear the coast calling me for a fishing trip. I'm no pirate, but sometimes I feel like I was wrongly born a land lover.
@WildcatsMovies WHAT ! He's still alive ! Bless you for telling me . I'm going to run out now and ring the churchbells in the village square and announce it to the townspeople !! Many thanks !!
@tifflanky been there done that my friend, all around the southern seas with my father. We anchored off shore, I would string a hammock between the main and spin. open a beer and listen to Jimmy Buffet looking up at the southern cross. Many good memories with his music.
I've seen some people on here say this man doesn't deserve the praise or his accumulated wealth. For one, who are you to make those accusations. Two, he has brought millions of people joy, happiness, and even a sense of peace even if it may be for a short amount of time. He may not have invented the light bulb, but cut the man some slack. He deserves that much.
as we all know Jimmy has played alot of really good songs and as we all pray he will as of yet sing us a few more. But this song......this song above all I believe holds for most of us the message and feelings we have come to treasure in our rebellious and slightly romantic spirits,
When I was 20 years old, my sister called me up and told me to come over to her apartment, she had my song. I listened to it and said to her, "I'm only 20 and I don't drink." She said - "Just wait - you'll see." She's gone now, breast cancer. When I want to remember her I play this. I'm 52 - I drink, and made enough money to buy Miami, and pissed it all away. Awesome.
omnistegan, it's not chastisement. It's acknowledgement of original mastery. Buffett owns this song in a way that others can only reach for, but never grasp. It's HIS. Anyone else who does it is doing homage and, if they've any honesty about them, would acknowledge the same. Art belongs to the artist.
A Girl Named SPOOKY turned me on to Jimmy Buffet in 1975 in st. pete Floridq; I was 23 lived with her sister awhile on treasure Island miss them both. Here's to JImmy and this pirate looks at 58.
While I was in the Navy and the ship was underway at night , I would sit up on deck and watch the moonlight on the waves and listen to this on my headphones. It was almost a religious experience.
Gord my brother, wherever you are the depths of emotion from this song follows you. Never know where you are and where ya been, but I sure as fuck wish I was with you to wherever it is you're going..go easy bro because my heart's with you all the way..I miss you man...
In my own strage way, I've done exactly that...followed in the Great One's wake, and plowed through uncharted waters. When ya go looking for your own song lines, sometimes the chorus' and coarses converge. Key West to Thailand, Kenya, Brazil and the Windward passage, even more'n a few Pascagoula runs...been there, done that...maybe get to do it again! Finz Up, y'all
Been there at Nissan Pavilion. Love the song and loved the show. Not just Mannassas came out. That was just the location. We fucked up ticket sales from everywhere. Parrotheads travel, Just saying.
40 years old and I became a father of the most beautiful little girl, she looks up at me and asks if Im a Pirate (lol) , I can only smile, give her a kiss and say yes baby
After the news I searched for any video of this concert. This was my son's first concert at 6 years old. Thank you for this gift.

Been listening and playing this song for twenty years and it still gets to me every time. the dream of escaping this insane world and being free...
My absolute favorite Buffett song!! Been a fan for 20+ years and as long as there's a Buffett concert, you'll find me at one (or many) each year....
I still have his first song on 8 track tape. From a away back decades ago.still love his songs.
You know what is amazing about Jimmy, he is still in his prime!!! His voice hasn't even withered a tad over the years. This performance is amazing! There is a mood Jimmy sets in his music that no one else can set!

I'm seeing this tonight! Madison Square Gardens! Jimmy is amazing. This kicks off my first day of summer for me!
absolutely love Jimmy Buffett...hope I get to see him sometime. I am getting pretty old.

Most of his fans are old; including me.

At 45 I have lived an adventurous and very interesting life, often on the edge, and I can often relate to Buffet songs. Especially pissing the money away and the younger women....seems those two go hand in hand.
This song NEVER gets old
Im a pirate looking at 19 just looking for a beach to get shipwrecked on with not a care in the world, this song always gives me hope.
All of his songs are clean and fun to hear. Unlike nowadays singers f.this f. That.
Never found one,but my nxt trip out there will be on the look!!
This song always pops into my head when I hear the coast calling me for a fishing trip. I'm no pirate, but sometimes I feel like I was wrongly born a land lover.

I was there this year!!
as we all know Jimmy has played alot of really good songs and as we all pray he will as of yet sing us a few more. But this song......this song above all I believe holds for most of us the message and feelings we have come to treasure in our rebellious and slightly romantic spirits,
love this song!
I am currently docked in Florida and I am a parrothead and have been since I worked on a sail boat out of Tampa
Sailors, pirates, and perfect harbors - you have got to love Jimmy.
When I was 20 years old, my sister called me up and told me to come over to her apartment, she had my song.
I listened to it and said to her, "I'm only 20 and I don't drink." She said - "Just wait - you'll see."

"Mother, mother ocean, I have heard your call, I've wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall." - simply perfect, Jimmy.
sorry to hear that. this is great stuff.
I love how personal taste is chastised. I heard the Jack Johnson version before I ever heard the original, and I like the way Jack Johnson does it.
Way to go Jimmy! We love you.
Gord my brother, wherever you are the depths of emotion from this song follows you. Never know where you are and where ya been, but I sure as fuck wish I was with you to wherever it is you're going..go easy bro because my heart's with you all the way..I miss you man...

Parrot Head here, currently docked at Louisville Kentucky.
Wow, yeah.
"Ballad of Spider John" is a HUGE fave, a cautionary tale of loves lost and life misspent.
I love being a Parrothead
20 year-old Parrotthead. Did I also mention I was born in 1991? That's right, kiddies. Been a parrotthead from the start. Probably will be 'til I die.
Jimmy Buffet I 95
Being an ex- combat veteran sailor, it is only fitting that this be played at my funeral. :)
Been there at Nissan Pavilion. Love the song and loved the show. Not just Mannassas came out. That was just the location. We fucked up ticket sales from everywhere. Parrotheads travel, Just saying.
Was a Land Sailor for a few years...after all these years I've found...there still ain't no Squids around.
best song ever!
Born and raised on Jimmy Buffett. 2nd generation Parrrothead!
We so can't go wrong here!!!!
I will always be a Pirate and a Parrot Head Forever. JB is one of the Greatest ! PdxBB
