That was the old Firedog Saloon. It used to be one of our favorite places before Katrina. They never built it back. There is a parking lot there now. We live about six blocks from there. But, there are a lot of new bar/grill/restaurants there now.

Most of us have some sort of “bama breeze” type place in our lives. So many relatable things in the song. What is mentioned in the song touches us on a deeper level and puts us in a mindset we can recall. Brings a little tear to the eye.

This song brings it all back. Left home in shorts and tshirt, with a guitar, $2 and 3 pair of underwear. Rode my thumb to Pass-A-Grille Beach, FLA in 1971. Lived on the beach for a while then with the Crazy Girls. Somehow drank for free and played air hockey all day in Shadracks on 8th Avenue. Got a house across from the Don CeSar and Hubbards Pier. Did my share of smugglin. And then this guy from Key West way comes along and puts it all to music. Ah The Stories We Could Tell. Thanks Jimmy

I lived on the gulf coast for 5 years and it was amazing. People from the upper states ask "How do you live with gators and hurricanes?" It's the price you pay for living in the greatest place in the greatest country on earth. It was a small price. I miss Naples-Fort Myers like someone else misses their family. It was paradise.

I’m a long ago veteran of Gulf Shores too (1965-05). Man has that place changed! I’d have to say Frederic, in 1979, was a major turning point. That’s when the real commercial development, high rise condos etc, started. Sure miss our little fishing village with one gas station, 3 restaurants, and a semi functional draw bridge that could leave you stranded on the island.

    • @theknowitall4090

@@tommathews3964 Yessir. I am a veteran of Gulf Shores too. Remember when you could pull you car off to the side of the road on the main road and go jump in the gulf. There was a Holiday inn and few gas stations. Most residents were fishermen or oil workers. I remember the old draw bridge just to the west of hwy 59 that would handle all 50 cars that would pass over in a day. After Hurricane Frederick I saw the changes happening to our secret paradise. I have been to beaches all over the world but we still go to Gulf Shores every year and as long as I'm alive I will take it over any beaches I've ever seen. We still go down and stay at Ft Morgan rd where although it has changed it really hasn't. The small fishing houses have now become 6 bedroom mansions but its still the secluded, off the beaten path place that I remember from my youth.

JBs music is not a music to lke or dislike, its a lifestyle to either like or dislike. If you didnt grow up on the beach you just wouldnt understand really. Especially the Gulf Coast beaches which are the prettiest in the US in my opinion and theyre very laid back beaches to say the least. The Keys are a lot like the Gulf Coast really as its very laid back too.

The Fire Dog, where this video is filmed, is in Bay St. Louis, MS. It was across the street from the beach and was a great place to hangout before that damn storm. Just up the road from it on the beach was a dive called The Good Life or as we called it the "low life". It had a downstairs open air bar that opened right out onto the beach and was about 20 yards from the water. Good times, good times. Thats what this song is about, Good Times.

Jimmy wrote this song as a tribute to all of the local beach bars and dives that were destroyed in the tragic hurricane seasons of 2004-05. The video was shot in the ruins of the Firedog Saloon right off South Beach Blvd in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi. This area was one of the worst hit during Katrina and the people of the Mississippi still need our help to restore the infrastructure and get the ball rolling to rebuild better and stronger than before.

As a veteran, I have spent a lot of time in some great towns by the Gulf from Tampa Fla. to Brownsville Tx. I even lived in Galveston for years. There is no other place like the Gulf coast! The people, the food, the ease of living in paradise...thats where I want to be! Ive seen many great coastal bars and clubs disappear from the earth after our hurricanes and storms, but somehow...they get rebuilt. It is heartbreaking to see something around so long and then its gone. Thats how we feel after the storms. We call it a small price you have to be willing to pay to live in paradise. This song takes me back! Fins up!!!

I learned why it was so important to the local people as well as Jimmy Buffett. One day I would like to go down to the gulf coast and see some of this wonderful watering hole. FINS UP!!!!

The place they filmed it at, the old Firedog Saloon in Bay Saint Louis, MS, is gone. But, the FloraBama, which is probably the place the song was based on, is still there. Although it has taken a beating or two from hurricanes over the years. We used to go the FloraBama when it was just a shack on the beach back in the early 80's. It's so big now, I don't even know where the old part actually was.

I had recently retired from the Navy and had just obtained my civilian mariners license when Katrina hit. I'm from Slidell, La. I went to work out of Houma La between Katrina and Rita. I rode Rita out on a 180' DSV in Houma, La. I saw the damage up front and personal... I spent about the next 14 years working out of south Louisiana, and weathered many more, though none as bad. I understand this song, I grew up in that special part of the world too...

No, New Orleans wasn't the only area affected by Katrina, it was the squeaky wheel as other poorer states like Mississippi suffered in silence, wiped out in catastrophic proportion. Spent summers down there. Pensacola, Gulf Shores, Destin, Panama City all over really. As for the latter I hear The Strip is gone now. 80's growing up that was the place to be. For a while I lived in Pearl River after the storm. Seems outside of NOLA nobody cared but also outside of the city was another mentality. You can still see traces of the storm 10 years later but also see people who put their heads down, got through it and rebuilt. There was a bar in Slidell that got destroyed in the storm, rebuilt, burned down just before reopening and rebuilt again. Southside I wanna say. Real easy to spend a Sunday there drinking.

I have lived on the Gulf side of Florida for over twenty years. It’s paradise and Jimmy Buffett brought that feeling to everyone and anyone who loved him RIP.

i thought that was the firedog. My ex and I lived there back in '94-'98. Best years of my life. I was a cop in the Bay and it breaks my heart to see the damage after all these years.

Thanks Jimmy for all the great tunes. I remember, sitting and talking all night long with Frank Brown. Had my purse stolen & he found it. The warm fireplace in the back was cozy in the wintertime albeit a little lonesome with most folks gone for the winter. Just a few of us regulars. You sounded great even then with your acoustic guitar, just a couple of us sittin' around having a few......Thanks for remembering Joe & the Gang....

I wanted to comment on this video because this is an awesome song but, I lived in GS for several years and loved every second of it. In September of 2004 when hurricane Ivan hit, I found out what ppl there have lived like for decades. I cried a lot for leaving and what we went through but more for what the Islanders there went through. God Bless you guys and I hope you are enjoying what I am missing out on just being an Islander for a short period of time.
