"Conductor Brad" on Amtrak's ski train is legendary. He's been a fixture on the California Zephyr and only recently retired. When you passed by the "windbreak" on the Ski Train, that was the famous Big 10 Curve in Arvada, CO. The high-definition live-feed Virtual Railfan camera that covers the entire curve is hosted by...Conductor Brad himself, from his home overlooking the Curve! Absolutely gorgeous close-up views of trains, wildlife, and Denver in the distance. Thanks for this re-cap of the entire series, too! It was nice to see it again.
There's something refreshing about watching these "full series" videos like I've seen a bunch of these videos before (not all of them) but I'm enjoying this immensely also. The inclusion of additional b roll is genius. Keep it up Mike
《ONE OF MY TOP FAVE TH-camRZ EVER!🙌💝》Only been a follower for 5 year's. Never commented until now. Am fellow Canadian 🇨🇦 here in Alberta. A recent "Miles in Transit" episode noted that the company that made the original street cars in New Orleans went on to become the current "Thomas" bus company. So the company is somewhat still in operation.
Yay! An hour of Downie Live! Just what is needed between Christmas and New Year. Hope you all had a great time and wishing you all the best for 2025! xxx
Until a few years ago, there were three aerial trams in the Rocky Mountains: Estes Park, CO, the ABQ one, and the Wyler Tramway in El Paso, TX. The latter allowed you to see into three states at one time (Texas, New Mexico, and Chihuahua MX).
The funicular-train-debate actually led to the Kaprun Funicular Disaster in Austria, because as the funicular wasn't classified as a railway its equipment didn't have to be up to "train" standards, just those of an elevator.
Two things - I lived in San Francisco and commuted by cable car. It was great fun having to take it every day. But it could be miserable on cold rainy days. And those street cars were not there when I lived there only the Muni ones and they were very run down. I love what they have done in turning them into rolling museums. It has revitalized the street car lines. Second, I went to the 1962 Seattle World Fair. That monorail and the Space Needle did seen very futuristic. There were plans to expand the monorail, but it was so expensive to build, that never happened. Bummer. And yeah, Angel Flight exists because the tourists love it. I grew up in LA and took it once.
Lisa-maybe we passed on the street. I was in the Air Force on leave when I and my family visited the Seattle World's Fair. For our poor family, who barely had television, the entire fair was mind boggling.
I go to LA once a year for a large convention and tend to stay near the Market. Then I take Angel's Flight up to the office building up top, grab a Starbucks, and catch the shuttle bus to the convention center. I'm on a cane and just taking that little bit of incline off my walking route is amazing. Also it's historic and I love it! I live in downtown Seattle and often take the monorail... it's more expensive than a bus but way more interesting and less walking when I'm trying to get to the Space Needle or Armory (where the monorail station is).
TWA was such an important airline in the development of commercial air travel and in my own life that being able to visit this hotel chokes me up. Classic indeed! Thank you.
I ride BART to work every day. Mike is on one of the older cars. (This dates this, but I am still enjoying the series!) These cars no longer exist. I wish they did. They were warmer and the seats were more comfortable. When BART first opened in the 70s, they offered everyone a free joyride. I remember taking a BART ride then as a child.
The Duquesne incline is admittedly not as useful as the Mon, so it's mostly for tourists. However, I did commute by Duquesne incline for about a year. I lived a couple blocks from the top of it, and worked downtown. There's several buses that stop at the bottom of the incline, and that's what most of the commuters do. Unless the weather was bad, I would usually just walk across the Ft. Pitt bridge, which takes about 15 minutes. It was the most relaxing commute I've ever had, just an incline ride and a walk across the river. I'd often be there at the time of their shift change, and the lady at the bottom would have me take the cash box up to the top for her. The first time she asked, I was pretty baffled, but then I realized, she'd probably already counted it and told them how much she was sending up with me, and it's not like I was gonna be able to sneak out somehow as we were climbing up the side of a cliff.
While I appreciate all the effort it takes to put these videos together and am regularly a huge fan of your content, these compilations worry me that you may have run out of material. If you needed a break during the holidays, I'd personally just have left it with a gap instead of recycling content. All that negativity aside, I do want to thank you for bringing us, the viewers, along for some of the most unique rides, at no additional cost to us besides time and a couple ads. You are the reason I started to get into riding trains, even if Amtrak makes it really hard to love many times. Thank you for highlighting trains and I look forward to more unique content in the future!
It gives newer viewers an opportunity to see older content they may not have previously seen, and a creator the opportunity to make some additional revenue. Magazines and tv shows recycle and repackage content all the time for the same reason. They know the die hards may not watch, but it’s a net positive. The die hards will mostly shrug it off but won’t unsubscribe, so no harm. Just look at the view count.
My thought is it’s bc he’s taking a break over the holidays. That’s usually when compilations come out. It’s not abnormal, lots of other creators do it. He’ll be back to regular content come January. The holiday season is sort of a tough choice for a lot of creators. It’s one of the most logical times to take a break, but it’s also the time of year when ad revenue is the highest. That’s why things like “vlogmas” is a thing from many creators, where they upload every day of December. But doing that takes a lot out of you and is the opposite of a break. Instead of creating new videos, some TH-camrs who make serial content have chosen the path that they release compilations during the holiday season. That allows them to both take a break from creating new content, and release content and still make money.
I've been on the Tram in Albuquerque, NM on my birthday years ago. I hope you saw the wreckage on the side of the mountain? It crashed back in the 1950's, due to a storm or fog. It was fun to go up and back down.
Really cool video with so many places, towns, planes, and of course, railroad transportation! I didn't even know you could find snow in Palm Springs California, and the Denver hotel-station was incredible! ❤
Next time you're in Pittsburgh, check out the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum where you can drive historic streetcars on a stretch of their original track. Also, some of our PCC trolleys are among those that ended up in San Francisco after their retirement here.
Great job going under the arches at 9:15. Perfect snow blast on the camera at 9:26 after the ski train. Riding the San Fran cable car would be so fun. The VW bus going down Lombard Street, chef's kiss. The engineering in the cable network is beyond crazy cool. Great cinematic edit for the Bart ride. Hopefully your tumble down in the snow wasn't bad. The Palm Springs airport was really neat. Perfect hat toss onto the camera. My son wants to stay at the TWA hotel. It's always interesting to hear other vloggers mention Casey Neistat. We did ride the subway in NYC, but didn't know about the Roosevelt Island tram when we were there years ago. Yes, I rewatched this series too.
You missed the Johnstown vehicular incline. You drive your car onto the incline and it takes you and your car to the top. The incline in Pittsburgh was for the steel workers that lived in the top. They use to have steps they would walk up after long days of work. Also many basements have toilets and sometimes showers because they would get so filthy. They would come through the basement door and get cleaned up before going upstairs.
Love this video. I definitely want to check out the Winter Park express/rtd duo next year. On a separate note I also hope they can potentially expand Moffat passenger service. Maybe a steamboat express leaving Denver mid day and getting to Steamboat early evening stopping in Winter park along the way.
You trip and ride in Pittsburgh... It's there for what used to be at the bottom by the river and an old bridge that used to go downtown. It's only there today because it's a historic landmark.
The streetcars in San Francisco are amazing, and they come from all over the world. I went in one that was from Italy. I also went on the old Russian funicular in Prague. It was stair-stepped and had multiple doors. It was easy to board at the bottom of the hill but sketchy to disembark at the top of Petrin Hill. It was a beautiful park to walk back down the hill.
Always love finding fun and unique transit! Some of my favorites in America are the Mobile Lounges at Washington Dulles Airport and the legitimate Peoplemover found below Houston International Airport before you go through security!
Mile, I'm so exhausted after this whirlwind adventure, I'm going to sleep. WAIT!! It's only 2:30 PM PST. OH well! Really amazing adventures. Happy New Year Rik Spector
53:51 the elevator is owned by the NPS, but it’s actually run by Bi-State Development who are most well known for running Metrolink. Bi-State also operates the gift shop, the helicopter tours, and the lemonade stands on the arch grounds. It’s a bizarre setup.
I love the energy you bring to your videos! I feel so lucky to have ridden all of these except the Roosevelt in NY, the Angels Flight, and the Morgantown mono. I'll add those to my list of places to go and rails to ride!
I've been to Winter Park three times two times in the summer which is the blast because you still get to slide down the mountain and once in the winter. This is going to be the best time of your life.
Mike, thank you so much for this really fun video! Talk about travelling! I do have tell you that earlier this year, in May, I visited a friend who lives in Pittsburgh! And I got to ride The Duquesne Incline and take some pictures of downtown Pittsburgh! Thank you again for this really cool video! I really appreciated it!
5:40 Y'all need to visit Switzerland, with the Glacier Express. The whole rail line is so scenic and amazing that it became a Unesco World Heritage site.
I used to take the F Car and a Cable Car to work at Fisherman's Wharf. I was a High School student. I was asked if I was going to work in SF, and I was NOT charged for transit because of it. I have also been in a position where I was not charged for a cable car ride as a local in SF.
I had the opportunity to ride the Duquesne Incline back in August 2024 when I visited my daughter. Great experience and views. Watched the city go to night mode. Amazing. The Seattle Monorail is fun too.
The PRT is not really a public transportation system. It is used to connect the WVU campuses and students ride for free with their student ID. That said, I did everything I could to avoid riding it during my time in Morgantown as it was unreliable.
46:04 the same concept but b4 they used water for counterweight, in Italy in the city of orvieto , umbria region u can see the same. Same region but in the city of Perugia another singular futuristic subway 😊
Hey, I'm just giving you a heads up. There's a incline in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and it has a lot of history and I thought you will be interested in it.
That was so fun to watch the whole series AND have ridden one too! I live in the SF Bay Area and ride BART a lot. I’ve also been on the cable cars in SF down the wharfs. I have some suggestions… There’s the ACE train that goes through a bit of the Bay and stops you off in cute downtowns like Livermore and Pleasanton, CA. There’s also one of the Funiculars in Monterey, CA that takes you to a restaurant.
The one time I was in New York I had the decision of standing next to a guy half naked or move down the train to the puke / piss filled cart.... I danced with the naked man
I've only ever acessed that Lamba street i believe ( time 13.11) when playing Grand Theft Auto, and I had no idea it existed 😁😁😁😁. Many thanks, Downie For giving us some right for someone like me who never had a clue.
Great video, some I'm familiar with, some not. It was fun to see the other Amtrak "Winter Park" station, we use the Winter Park, Florida Amtrak station all the time!!
Is the ski train also the California Zephyr that you and Will did a few years ago now? The St Louis arch was amazing, my Dad told me you could go up in the arch didn't know it was such a cool way to get to the top though.

Hah, love it when railway workers watch your content, and even meeting you! Influencing folks in a real and positive way!
if I understood correct that guy working for Amtrak did even because of him.
There's something refreshing about watching these "full series" videos like I've seen a bunch of these videos before (not all of them) but I'm enjoying this immensely also. The inclusion of additional b roll is genius. Keep it up Mike
Really enjoy this series Mike! Thanks for the "big post" putting it all together!!
I completely agree wholeheartedly!

I love that you ask when it was built while standing next to a sign telling when it was built.
Until a few years ago, there were three aerial trams in the Rocky Mountains: Estes Park, CO, the ABQ one, and the Wyler Tramway in El Paso, TX. The latter allowed you to see into three states at one time (Texas, New Mexico, and Chihuahua MX).

Seeing that tie dye bus with Jerry Garcia & some owsley bears on the side warmed my heart, we love the good old’ Grateful Dead 🫶

Conductor Brad's "Last Zephyr" is one of the most exciting and well-written books I've ever read.

Lombard Street is the crookedest street in the world. It is not the zig zag street. Love you Mike Downie!

Its really cool to see you make it down to new orleans. Street cars are pretty cool.
I remember when the St. Louis arch was being built. It was so interesting to see the progress.
I used to ride the San Francisco cable cars to work. Those were the days. Shalom from Israel.
Almost . . . Ma non ga HEEL a. Love your videos! The Kona airport on the Big Island of Hawaii is also an outdoor airport. It's very cool!

Downielive video never fails to entertain us!
Perfect for a rainy Saturday!
I would add the Venice IT monorail. One rail and tires on the side for balance.
Thank you I enjoy your rain expeditions very much.
Always enjoy the videos pal 👍
One of your best videos! Thank you for visiting New Mexico.
I cannot believe you skipped over how cool the Albuquerque Airport is

Love it. The Vegas Monorail is worth a ride.
The streetcars in SanFran reminded me on Columbia.
Idk why but they would just fit with the old cars
BART always reminds me of the precursor to the skytrain in Vancouver

Hey, I'm just giving you a heads up. There's a incline in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and it has a lot of history and I thought you will be interested in it.
love these long full series you've been dropping lately. Keep it up man!
We have 2 more coming for you!
nice!
Waffle fries> Arbys Curly fries > everything else better be a poutine
That was so fun to watch the whole series AND have ridden one too! I live in the SF Bay Area and ride BART a lot. I’ve also been on the cable cars in SF down the wharfs.
I have some suggestions…
There’s the ACE train that goes through a bit of the Bay and stops you off in cute downtowns like Livermore and Pleasanton, CA.
There’s also one of the Funiculars in Monterey, CA that takes you to a restaurant.
Downie - just don't try to ride the St. Charles at 2AM to get back to your hotel! It's sooo busy I gave up and got a cab!😂
love these other transit method videos your making, keep em coming
The balloon when Mike was trying to be introspective: *”So anyway, I started blasting…”*
19:21 wait... what??? its not popeyes???🤣
The one time I was in New York I had the decision of standing next to a guy half naked or move down the train to the puke / piss filled cart.... I danced with the naked man

You should do impromptu fan meetups when you’re in cities!
STL here, would’ve loved to say hi!
Also from STL and came to comment the same thing 😅
Good complitation video. I’m sure I’m not alone when saying it’s nice to see good grouping of like videos. Have a good new year
I really like the time in the airports and the traveling in-between places videos. Would love to see more of that kind 👍
what an awesome channel you have
Great video, some I'm familiar with, some not. It was fun to see the other Amtrak "Winter Park" station, we use the Winter Park, Florida Amtrak station all the time!!
Mike, dude! Love your channel! Thanks for the inside info on the cable car system!
the albaquicqui one is not a tram its a cable lift or a airial rope way
Fun to see this again!
I'm sorry to conductor 5:40 Brad but the most scenic train ride is in Skagway Alaska i recommend to go on that train its beautiful.
What about the California zephyr more specifically through Nevada And Utah
@nuwame591 Na nothing beats Alaska
I rode the bike down Lombard Street once
Very French reference, but Thibault reminded me of Odile Deray in the airport scene... 😂
The real answer to the fry question is, "Yes."
Happy new year 🎉 in advance sir Mike and stay safe to your journey
So public transport in the US is basically just a theme park ride? That does actually sound quite accurate actually :(
Isn't there also an airport where they adopted Disneys people mover system? I remember a video about that.
What a video? I did not expect any of that. Greetings from Europe.
Chattanooga, TN has their incline railway as well..
30:42
“make it stop”
😭😂😂
Welcome to another episode of planes, trains, and automobiles!
You should check out the Las Colinas Area Personal Transit. Short and boring but unique for sure!
Thank you Mike this video is great first time seeing it
Is the ski train also the California Zephyr that you and Will did a few years ago now? The St Louis arch was amazing, my Dad told me you could go up in the arch didn't know it was such a cool way to get to the top though.
It runs along that same route, yes
I drove that street in Grand Theft Auto SA
The brake smell in SF will always stay with me
I love the san francisco trolleys and cable cars
Also did you try out the BART system in san francisco? Really cool and faster than driving.
Sorry, scratch that; i didnt see that part
we enjoyed that very much
Another great video. An interesting angle to travel.
That waffle looks delicious 😋
