Bingo! The visuals are world class and don't rely on stock photos or using the same images over and over again to fill the time like a few slapdash efforts I've seen lately...
my favourite thing about this channel is its detail and nuance. i generally try to stay on the lighter side of things, but if transit/urbanism communities have one problem, its surface-level nuanceless discussion. im so grateful for a high-quality creator who doesnt fall for "light rail bad", "park and ride bad" type arguments
Your daily reminder to simply build more trains. It is the only answer to every question in existence. Don't be brought down by questions of how much it costs, since those same people have no problem funding much more expensive highways. Always build more trains, and ceaselessly talk about how we should build more trains to everyone at all times of the day.
This video came just in time. I spent a month in Porto last year and rode the Metro a lot. It was fun walking across the Ponte Luiz I bridge and watching it go by. I miss Porto and Portugal a LOT. Great vid.
I visited Porto about a year ago and I loved it (even though it was raining the entire time). I don't know why some people blindly criticize light rail as some inferior form of transit, when in many cases it is the most practical option.
I really like your videos. Anyway, i understand the sentiment. Note that im not a city person, and that i maybe get into a city of more than 20 thousand people once a year, and to a city of 2000 people once a month. And a city of more than a million once a decade(im twenty, ive been to vienna once, and to munich once). Oh, and ive been to linz twice. Anyway this is talking as a outsider. Light rail is a mixed bag due to how much it can be watered down. I mean, Light rail can literally be streetcars. And streetcars are great, and i wouldn't know how to move through linz without them, because youd need to be absolutely insane to drive there. Assuming they got signal priority and that stuff in order, which linz has. The problems with Light rail start when they are sold as rapid transit. They can be great. But whats more likely is that you end up a system of cross city streetcars that are slower than cars. Or alternatively, some sbahn-light metro hybrid that doesn't regional well because its limited to 80 kilometers per hour, and doesn't do metro style service well because of painfully low frequencys. Anyway. Streetcars are almost always worth it for any city of more than 50 thousand people. However, as the population approaches 200 thousand people, i feel like you are better off looking towards brescia or rennes than looking towards Bonn or Frankfurt. But yea, maybe i feel that way because automated light metro incentives densification within the area accessible by subway, and ive seen way too much urban (yes, suburbs are urban. Its in the name) encroachment over the years.
I love our brothers from the north managed to build this impressive light rail system and the comboios urbanos in addition. Lisbon is goin' in the right direction aswell tho, I rlly love the lisbon metro and how it's growing.
Another great video! Glad you touched on the pre-metro concept since Edmonton and Calgary both modeled their networks after Frankfurt's Pre-Metro network from the near identical Siemens-Duewag U2 cars to the concept of multiple lines sharing a downtown transit mall/subway. And even though Calgary hasn't built their subway yet, it's still on the books technically as a future project under Stephen/8th Avenue. Then again with the sh*t-show that is the current Green Line project I don't see that happening in my lifetime sadly... Meanwhile in Edmonton? We've got 2 ghost stations collecting dust but otherwise a great if smaller system. And even if our own "green line" aka the Valley Line was fraught with many many many many problems from the get go including 20+ car, pedestrian, bike and bus collisions in its first year of operation, having to rework at least HALF the piers on the line for SERIOUS structural defects and flaws as well as cost over runs and parts shortages... But it's now open and it's a success as imagined so even with the teething issues all new lines have had... it's at least open. Unlike Toronto's two questionable LRT projects as well as Hamilton's, Mississauga's and Quebec City's.. Perhaps a future video idea? A snapshot of all the new Canadian LRT lines that have opened, what issues before and after they've faced i.e. Ottawa's axel scandal, Edmonton's ECTS scandal, Green Line issues, the other ones mentioned before, etc.
Square Shreddies... Diamond Shreddies... Same diff except for the use of low-floor vehicles perhaps.. Like OTTAWA! Though if you are going old-school definitions, Edmonton has a true traditional Frankfurt-style Pre-Metro system because it was the first in North America of the new build LRT systems in the 1970's and it was directly copied from that German city almost down to the rolling stock to save time, costs and design considerations. To me it's really the best underdog system in Canada... It gets over 7500 passengers per route mile which is a good metric to see how well-used the line is... And 6-digit daily ridership and was smart to build the downtown subway first so that it future proofed most of the downtown trunk line to handle way more than it would ever likely see, though it's still missing two stations to make it a true downtown subway loop as originally intended.. Though there's a good chance that will change soon since the rumor is the province wants to put the central station for Edmonton's massive railway network scheme at Railtown.. Jasper + 109th which used to be the CP Rail Yards and Main station before they were closed and made into a strip mall plaza...
Porto shows that other cities and countries just need to STFU stop with the excuses and just get it done as quickly as possible - excuses are useless, complaining is draining and nobody has any time for any goddam excuses
Hmm. It'd be nice to see some actual metrics. What's the cost of capital per ride? I did a quick check and got around 2.65 euros/ride, which seems pretty good if true. Also, can we get a rough look at the actual positive externalities?
Cool video but also, isnt this just a tram that runs partially underground? We have that in the town I live and we call it a tram. Maybe the terms are a bit..intersected there
Metro is a not just a word, it‘s an idea, at least for marketing departments. Metro suggests higher speed, greater infrastructure and modernity. A lot of light rail systems market themselves as metro for that exact reason. See LA Metro, Lausanne Metro Line 1, U-Bahn Frankfurt…
Porto “Metro” is good in North American standard but relatively meh in Europe standards. Yes, Porto, who is the 2nd tier city in a poor EU country was able to build a rapid tram line was good but you can tell some corners were cut. Speed, vehicles are not what I would called a metro. The frequency is dismal and the walking infrastructure connecting to the station is terrible.
nah that ain't true, there r still a lot of European big cities (even way bigger than Porto) with worse public transport so it's definitly not meh in european standards.
A government is not a business. It does not have to make a profit to enrich shareholders. It does not need to make returns on investment. A government does not exist to generate profits.
Uh huh. Is this a double standard France? Your UNESCO screeched and whined about our Thailand Highspeed Rail project being too close to the Ayutthaya world heritage site, 10 kilometers away is somehow "too close" and stalled our project for years now, but this is somehow allowed? Hypocrite farangs!

thank you for this great video, letting professors talk in such formats is a bold great thing by itself.

Your content deserves so much more love, keep up the great work 🔥
Really appreciate it, thanks for watching!
This channel is such a win
everyone who watches is the true winner 😎
I've only been to Porto once, many decades ago, but I really loved it. It's great to see this system. Thanks for showing us!
Portugal mentioned!!!!
For real though I think Portugal deserves way more attention than it gets, especially in the English speaking world.
Went to Porto and Lisbon earlier last year - wonderful cities - perfect in May-June. Love both cities.
I don’t know how you have this high production value with so few subs
😎 tyty
Right? This is vox level production.
Bro, you need more subscribers for the good work you're doing!

Never heard about this channel until this video about my own city appeared on recommendations. Already subscribed, of course. Impressive quality!
this is so brilliantly made! keep up the good work!
i'm surprised you don't have 1mil subscribers cause the amount of effort you put into your videos is insane
The Moose returns! In Europe this time! And with a much less depressing story than the Toronto video. Looking forward to see what you do next!
one of my most favorite transport/city planning channels has posted again
Love your content, you have some of the best editing I've seen on youtube. Also after visiting Lisbon this year, Porto is undoubtedly better.
Glad you enjoyed - definitely love editing these :)
Literally was checking earlier today if there's a new moose video 😂

light rail, as he said. Metro in Portugal comes from a different word doesn't mean it's an fully metro.

your videos are good
Hes making a reference to rail baltica in a video about portugal?
Looks like hes touring eastern Europe
That is interesting, but why didn't they think of a monorail or aerial transit system instead? It could be cheaper and faster to build and operate.

Love your videos❤. Can you make a video on the Indias metro systems, indias building the most metro systems in world right now.
ive been on this metro

Ty king, always here for more pro tram propaganda 💗.
So they built light rail - not a metro 🙄
as he said, Metro in Portugal doesn't mean a full metro.
