This course is amazing and absolutely for everyone. At first it was a tad slow because I knew a lot of those concepts, but I understood small details even on the foundations which I wasn't aware. After 7 months I learned more here than in my last 3 years amateurish mixing and watching lots of videos online. Now after learning many mixing topics to the greatest possible detail I find that a lot of those videos actually give you bad information and practices. I started taking the course because sometimes I felt like I wasn't sure what steps to do next in the mix. His course is based on learning not only what, but why you do things. Although to get better you really have to practice, I no longer feel self doubt, if I'm doing things the good way or the best way possible. I think that's the greatest gift in this course, to know in detail all topics from mixing to recording and mastering such that you can do your best and feel confident that you're not falling into any pitfalls and are in the proper path. All that's left now is to practice!

Thank you for explaining so well and showing how distortion adds harmonics! I’ve always heard this and read it in books and articles and of course I’ve heard it with my ears comparing how fat and rich distorted is compared to a clean signal, but to actually see the difference on an analyzer and to understand why to boost or cut mids depending on the context is really helpful!

I've been attending Andrew's Course for the past 7-8 months now, and I am amazed at the level of growth I've experienced, especially when I look at my own mixes. From the very beginning, Andrew has a no-nonsense way of explaining mixing techniques. There were many things that I used to believe in prior to attending his course (such as using AI mastering plugins, and attenuating every resonant frequency possible), although now I take a more methodical and attentive approach to mixing by listening and applying changes where necessary. Wonderful video. I knew all these techniques but not why they work and when to apply them. Killer! I would love to see a similar video talking about bass frequencies (bass instruments and kicks) vs compression.

Nice video! i always struggled with mid scoops and distorted vs clean guitars. To be honest, the dirtier the guitar tone the harsher it sounded (especially with amp modelling). This technique really showed me how to balance some of those variables and with information on the actual cause of these issues. If you liked this information as much as I did, you should experience the full force of an entire course of information by Andrew. We are always blown away each and every class with eye opening information, tips, nuances and ugly truths...we cut through marketing and learn about the tools, techniques and underlying principals of audio engineering. Very understandable upon detuned dist guitar harmonics.. I think I can try to bring more clarity when lead gtr and rhythm gtr plays together.Thx. But how about bring more reverb of the lead guitar which may also masked by the rhythm one 🤪🤪
If you mean that you have a saturation generator and EQ, and you mean to allow a lead synth to cut through the rhythm synth, then both orders can be working.

I can't comment on theoretical examples. If you say they are mid boosted it can be mid scooped anyway because many amps/pedals have "0db mid" around 4 o'clock. Even if it's really boosted why not? I just say how to control it not to hide the solo. If you have just a riff part it can be boosted. Plus let's be honest. Metal is the most saturated music. I'm more talking about perfect clarity.

From principal of signal processing, two signals mixed together on non-linear element (this can be saturation, compressor, modeling-amp, ..) will produce additional 2 frequencies as sum and subtraction of that input frequencies. If you have 2 frequencies close to each other, the subtraction of f1 - f2 will produce very low frequency (160 - 150 = 10) and this can negatively impact the low-end, where will be suddenly lot of energy. Such signal, sent directly to PA system, can blow up the speakers when they will not have subsonic filter, or it will sound muddy. So, lot of frequencies and saturation/compressor/... can be contra-productive. It explains why you have in the spectral scope low end, even when there are no any instruments.

@@AndrewZeleno1 ok, i watched again. just saying i didn't understand. 6:04 i understand your discussion of focused/unfocused. 6:50 you say it may be preferable to minimize mid frequencies to hide the extra harmonics. 7:50 you point out that manufacturers scoop mids to handle this problem. why mids? aren't the high and low frequencies responsible for tuning too? you demonstrate how distortion adds harmonic content numerous times, and it doesn't seem limited to mid frequencies. what i take from this video in the end is that scooping mids on rhythm lets you add mids to leads; this seems kind of obvious, but i know you're trying to say something more complex.
Imagine you fell in the dirt. You can go dirty, or you have clean your face at least and hide some of dirty parts. The same here. Those mids are hyped by saturation. The saturation in mids. You hide a bit of it.

This course is amazing and absolutely for everyone. At first it was a tad slow because I knew a lot of those concepts, but I understood small details even on the foundations which I wasn't aware. After 7 months I learned more here than in my last 3 years amateurish mixing and watching lots of videos online. Now after learning many mixing topics to the greatest possible detail I find that a lot of those videos actually give you bad information and practices.
I started taking the course because sometimes I felt like I wasn't sure what steps to do next in the mix. His course is based on learning not only what, but why you do things. Although to get better you really have to practice, I no longer feel self doubt, if I'm doing things the good way or the best way possible. I think that's the greatest gift in this course, to know in detail all topics from mixing to recording and mastering such that you can do your best and feel confident that you're not falling into any pitfalls and are in the proper path. Thank you for explaining so well and showing how distortion adds harmonics! I’ve always heard this and read it in books and articles and of course I’ve heard it with my ears comparing how fat and rich distorted is compared to a clean signal, but to actually see the difference on an analyzer and to understand why to boost or cut mids depending on the context is really helpful!

I've been attending Andrew's Course for the past 7-8 months now, and I am amazed at the level of growth I've experienced, especially when I look at my own mixes. From the very beginning, Andrew has a no-nonsense way of explaining mixing techniques. There were many things that I used to believe in prior to attending his course (such as using AI mastering plugins, and attenuating every resonant frequency possible), although now I take a more methodical and attentive approach to mixing by listening and applying changes where necessary. Nice video! i always struggled with mid scoops and distorted vs clean guitars. To be honest, the dirtier the guitar tone the harsher it sounded (especially with amp modelling). This technique really showed me how to balance some of those variables and with information on the actual cause of these issues. If you liked this information as much as I did, you should experience the full force of an entire course of information by Andrew. We are always blown away each and every class with eye opening information, tips, nuances and ugly truths...we cut through marketing and learn about the tools, techniques and underlying principals of audio engineering. Very understandable upon detuned dist guitar harmonics.. I think I can try to bring more clarity when lead gtr and rhythm gtr plays together.Thx. But how about bring more reverb of the lead guitar which may also masked by the rhythm one 🤪🤪

When you say boost mids in a synth, do you mean with an eq post distortion? Or pre distortion?
If you mean that you have a saturation generator and EQ, and you mean to allow a lead synth to cut through the rhythm synth, then both orders can be working.

Здравствуйте, плохо слышу разницу в звучании при изменении некоторых параметров, думаю, либо не хватает опыта и слуха, либо же подводят наушники, в связи с этим вопрос: наушники (откалиброванные в Sonarworks) или же студийные мониторы более предпочтительны при сведении?
Скажу честно это очень большая тема которую объяснять в тексте самоубийство

I wonder what do you think about modern metal mixes.. Where all rythm guitars are really mid boosted and totally opposite of what you explained here. Great video, cheers!
I can't comment on theoretical examples. If you say they are mid boosted it can be mid scooped anyway because many amps/pedals have "0db mid" around 4 o'clock. Even if it's really boosted why not? I just say how to control it not to hide the solo. If you have just a riff part it can be boosted. Plus let's be honest. Metal is the most saturated music. I'm more talking about perfect clarity.

From principal of signal processing, two signals mixed together on non-linear element (this can be saturation, compressor, modeling-amp, ..) will produce additional 2 frequencies as sum and subtraction of that input frequencies. If you have 2 frequencies close to each other, the subtraction of f1 - f2 will produce very low frequency (160 - 150 = 10) and this can negatively impact the low-end, where will be suddenly lot of energy. Such signal, sent directly to PA system, can blow up the speakers when they will not have subsonic filter, or it will sound muddy. So, lot of frequencies and saturation/compressor/... can be contra-productive. It explains why you have in the spectral scope low end, even when there are no any instruments.

6:50 you say it may be preferable to minimize mid frequencies to hide the extra harmonics.
7:50 you point out that manufacturers scoop mids to handle this problem.
why mids? aren't the high and low frequencies responsible for tuning too? you demonstrate how distortion adds harmonic content numerous times, and it doesn't seem limited to mid frequencies.
what i take from this video in the end is that scooping mids on rhythm lets you add mids to leads; this seems kind of obvious, but i know you're trying to say something more complex.
Imagine you fell in the dirt. You can go dirty, or you have clean your face at least and hide some of dirty parts. The same here. Those mids are hyped by saturation. The saturation in mids. You hide a bit of it.
