"The thing about folk music is it's not static" - this video made a folk nerd even happier than I expected. That statement is important and so easy to forget.

@@Kelrik_Kenning Yeah, the phrase the chorus is built around (tending the flame not worshipping the ashes" is a popular one in folk circles

How could anyone be mad at you?
If anyone asks who you are just say what I say when telling others about your channels. "She is an amazing singer, who is absolutely gorgeous in every way. Someone that no matter how much you are in pain both emotionally and physically she has the ability to make you smile and laugh. A very talented girl who deserves every one of her now 453,000 subscribers here and over 1,000,000 on Twisted Translations."
On second thought maybe you shouldn't describe yourself like that, from you it could make you look conceited. But thanks for making me smile every day, even turning 29 yesterday was made better by watching you about 30 times in a row.

I like how you acknowledged the song as a historical tune. A lot of people only know it as the theme of Outlander. While the newer words fit the beginnings of the series, I prefer the Jacobite lyrics. Yours is good as well! Nice job!

Our conure just loves the highs! I like them all. When you are up, you fly. And when you are down, you make this old man want to cry. Sending you the grandfatherly hug you needed back then. I love your singing, and I love the look on your face when you do. The crying? I'd wipe away the tears and love the sincerity of them. All the best.

I am a Japanese girl who now lives in Scotland.
I am engaged to a girl who originally comes from the Isle of Skye (well the Isle of Søay just off the Skye coastline).
My girlfriend was all ready to hate this version as this song is close to the heart of most Skye islanders, but she absolutely adores it!

Your song's words are wonderful to me. It is the words about a sail ship talking to all and about traveling the seas and it's crew. I very much love the way you have written you lyrics to this music. Thank you so very much for it reminds me of my brother I lost two years ago. He really liked sailing and walking on the beach. As you sang your song I could see my brother looking at me again in my mind smiling as me. Thank you so very much. Steven would have loved your song for he loved folk music. I miss him.

My mother loved outlander when I introduced her to it. My father passed away in 2005 and she was never the same. The show and it's music sparked memories and intrigue. Made her cry often. She passed unexpectedly 2020. I dont watch television anymore. When I heard your voice I started crying, and I'm trying to type but cant see. Face is still leaking. I without doubt appreciate what you have done with this and agree there is no way to know exactly how old traditional songs were. We try though. Pretty confident 100 or 1,000 years ago they would be beside themselves with rosey cheeks. Your version does it for me and I'm greatful.
I'm what would be considered a modern pagen from a very old soul. And similarly with the belief and practice there is no one way. The idea of it being so is modern. Misses the point and what it's all about. Like a sharp beam of light you tapped immediately into my soul & heart with your voice and words.
Thankyou! Most sweet and kind one.❤ From a proud, most stubborn Irish-Dane.🔥

I've been listening to (and loving!) your music a lot lately, and greatly enjoyed your version of The Skye Boat Song. Then... Today I found a family genealogy written by my father's father, going back an additional two generations to his father's parents, and was surprised to find that my great-great grandmother came from the Isle of Skye and my great-great grandfather came from "a smaller island north of Skye" according to my grandfather's notes. I knew that my ancestry traced back to Scotland, but not quite to where. This song has so much more meaning for me, now. Thank you for this beautiful version of it!

I think those lyrics “All that was good....” are speaking of your own past. We all walk on through life thinking we’re the same as always, but suddenly the realisation hits us that “...All that was fair , all that was me is gone”, because that youthful part does go, it is gone, and what is left is wondering “ what the heck happened?” I know I do, I am 47, lol. Make the most of each moment.

    Amazing amazing amazing
Who would have known a 600 year old song would travel so far and make a cable tv series Outlander a special show as it is
The song was first written in 1672
The title was first called the Boat song
Then changed to the lady boat song then in 1711 the skye boat song was sang by a 12 year old girl that had a baby and a husband in the highlands before he was forced into the British Navy
So the song is really about a girl missing her love of her world her husband

This demonstrates another way that folk music is not static. Singers can use the same tune with different words to express their feelings of the current moment even if it's quite different from the original version. Thus, Greensleeves can become What Child Is This, or the song of a gentleman dying of syphilis in London can become the song of a cowboy dying of a gunshot on the streets of Laredo. Folk music is not bound to a single time, place, or set of words. This set of words is just as valid as the first set or Mr. Stevenson's set. an equally valid set of words could be used to describe the feelings of the prince as he lay dying in Paris with no hope left of achieving the great purpose that died at Culloden.

The idea that the folk music genre is so organic and changeable is both exciting and tragic to me. This means there are reams and reams of unique renditions and variations that are lost forever. OTOH, much of what is created in the tech age is now possible to record for posterity. The artists of today can listen and learn indefinitely.
EDIT: BTW, screw the trolls, bunch of pissants. Do what you like, Malinda!

Your reimagined version really captured the essence of the song, that the person changed between the beginning of the journey to the end. The footprints on the sand perfectly describes the same concept. Excellent reimagining.

When I listen to this song, it makes me think of the urge to explore, a sence of curiousity. Actual mountains of rain and sun and sky and trees and rivers too. Instead of sad grief, it feels like something to listen to while wondering.

This is so beautiful!!! I love that you added your own words and melodies. I agree that folk music is both meant to be changed in the way that it's performed, but also wanting to honor the one who composed the music as well.
    Well done, Malinda!!

Stop worrying about the haters and just do what you feel in your heart. Never feel that you need to explain. God bless you always.

This version made me cry. It made me aware of the path I have walked and how I have changed. It gave me the opportunity to acknowledge and thank the person I was and let them go, take the torch from them without worrying about being anyone in particular, just me.

I'm shook. The meaning you imbued with the new lyrics and then transitioning them back into the chorus...astonishing work!

I hardly ever comment, but I had to on this one. I loved the Outlander series, but always wanted to hear a longer version of the theme song. This one delivers both length and sustenance in the lyrics. Love it!

Oah and what a reimagining it was...calming, beautiful, moving, in a way just like I imagine the ocean to be when it's not being wild and chaotic. I think I'd love to see more covers reimagined by you

You really are an artist flower. Made even better in my book for your love of the history and celtic origins of folk songs/music.

I didn't know until recently that The Sky Boat Song even *had* words. I learned it years ago because it's a gorgeous tune.
