- In this video, we have a look at a Qantas First Class flight from Hong Kong to Sydney on board an Airbus A380-800.
QF 127/128 is normally operated by a Boeing 747-400, but during peak travel season (Eg. Christmas, New Year, etc.) a much larger Airbus A380-800 is used instead to cope with the increased passenger numbers. This means that I’m able to secure a First Class seat on this flight!
After checking in at the Qantas First Class counter, I relax in the Qantas Hong Kong Lounge. Although there’s no separate lounge for First Class passengers, the lounge agent gives me a personal escort and hands me over to the Lounge Concierge who personally oversees my care while I’m there. First Class guests have reserved tables for them in a prime location in the lounge. Table service is also very attentive!
Once I board the A380, I take a look at the First Class product which is still very good after being rolled out a decade ago. I review the hard product in immense detail during the flight - this includes the seat positions, IFE system, massage function, storage, lighting, ventilation, etc. The lie-flat bed is one of the most comfortable in the skies. The comfortable bedding ensemble used in First Class is from Sheridan. Martin Grant pyjamas and amenity kits are provided as well.
During the 9 hour red-eye flight, I’m served two meals - a dinner is served shortly after take-off, and breakfast is served just prior to landing. The First Class menu is designed by Australian chef, Neil Perry, and the food/drinks are served on elegant tableware designed by David Caon.
I review the Qantas A380 First Class product again on the longer flagship QF 1 between Sydney-Singapore-London. Stay tuned for that impressive review!

The hard product and meals on QF don't compare to a number of their competitors, such as SQ, EK or EY, but at the end of the day it's still a reasonable First Class product. I hope the refreshed A380 F class in the next year or two will be something amazing!

Not the cleanest either. The walls and edges were pretty gross. Like near the headphone hook. Could really go for a nice wipe down.
And what happened to the leather seats?
I don't think they ever had leather seats.
The dirtiest seats I've seen were on BA Club World. Dust and grime everywhere. A glass of water from the galley had lipstick on it! :O
Yeah i didn't mean them personally with leather seats, but first class having leather seats in general.
And as for that BA Club World, that's nasty. Still doesn't excuse this flight, not for the prices these seats go for.
Don't waste money travelling with Qantas, its service sucks, most of the stewards are males in their 50s, if you ask for a glass of water, it takes ages. They are very rude to Asians. Qantas inflight entertainment system is very old type like from the 80s, most of the movies are at least 10-15 years old.
The product was designed more than 10 years ago which was actually semi-decent at the time but now leapfrogged by top airlines around the world. It's a pity QF decided only to revamp and do a light touchup of this instead of drastically improve it!

Guys, reading through your comments, the set up at QF lounge in HK airport is a business class set up. In the past, there used to be a separate area for first passengers - but not anymore. Hence I was surprised to learn that Eddie was flying 1st when I was inform that QF does not fly 1st class anymore from HK to Australia. Have they brought back 1st class recently. I agree the QF lounge needs upgrading, to provide better facilities for 1st passengers from other airlines as well. I gather that there is a new CX lounge next to QF lounge albeit not as posh as the other CX lounges.
QF uses an A380 from time to time on the SYD-HKG route and previously they would upgrade platinums to the F cabin but give them J treatment. This time, however, they were actually selling a F class product. It's probably not worth redoing the HKG lounge as it seems F class isn't a permanent fixture on this route. Passengers can always use the fancy facilities at CX Wing/Pier :)

Gate 23 is close to the 07R zone than usual Gate 15 which can be a 30 min pushback taxi but walk from lounge to Gate 23 same distance as CX lounges

Some of the flights are perks of my work travel allowance. Some travel are award tickets booked using points. And some are paid out of my credit card. You're right it does end up being a small fortune doing all these trips combined!!! :p

Anyways, the QF F product is still good even though it's old and can't compare with the new suites by EY and SQ. I would fly them again! :)

Great video Eddie. For a few years Qantas didn't sell first class to Hong Kong even when the A380 was on - they just treated it as part of business class and let Plats and above sit there. I did that a couple of times. First time we got no mattress at all, just a blanket, but it was enough for me. The second time I got a nice flight attendant who'd had me before and gave me the full bedding and amenity kit. Wow, that was comfortable. Having done that and now Qantas sell first class I'd be open to flying it although if I had to choose I'd do it on the daytime leg on the way over to experience the First Menu and get a guaranteed spa appointment.
Next time you're in Hong Kong (even if you're flying with Qantas) you have to try the Pier if you haven't already. As much as I like the Sydney first lounge, the Pier is even better in my view.
I'm a QF Plat so I've been to the Pier/Wing CX F lounges before - I wanted to see what the QF lounge offered as extras to F pax. Apparently not much!
Anyways, the A380 is a temp aircraft on this route. Later on in 2019 the 747s get swapped to the 787s with no F class. But who knows, maybe over holiday/peak travel seasons they'll reintroduce the A380 and have F class again!

Qantas has been upping their aviation game. Their lounges are really nice and comfortable. The one in melbourne is pretty nice. However, I still feel they lack the wow factor like Emirates and Singapore airlines for first class passengers.
Qantas knows they can't compare with the Middle Eastern airlines or Asian carriers like SQ. But it's still a decent First Class product that I would happily fly again :)

Noticed a few comments here about the lounge not being a First class dedicated lounge (if you have seen Eddie's other videos you will note Qantas does operate First class only lounges in their hubs at Sydney and Melbourne). Given Hong Kong is an outport (e.g. not at their home base), Qantas doesn't operate a dedicated First Lounge and this practice is similar for most airlines (they used to have a First Lounge in Hong Kong but merged them). In Hong Kong Qantas operates a First & Business Lounge which is actually a decent offering for business passengers, and most importantly the location of the lounge is convenient as it is immediately after you clear immigration (it's the most convenient location) and Qantas flights are usually parked (but not always) in nearby gates.
Eddie also mentioned passengers could access the Cathay lounges.

Eddie, I have noticed that you normally do not make seat adjustments until the seat belt light is off. Is that a personal preference because normally you can do that after you reach 10,000 ft? Great video as always. Thanks
I suppose the flight attendants can't police much before the seatbelt sign comes off because they're still strapped in themselves....
I'm not sure what the official FAA policy is, but I just assume once the seatbelt light is extinguished, you're free to do whatever with the seat.

The double ring that you hear as the plane is climbing is the indicator of 10,000 ft. at least that is what I have always been told.
IF IN always go to cx lounge and a walk back but boarding always slow and also on that flight you always find many staff and crew families. Service on 744s in my experience in f same as J ...average.I commuted on these flights for 12 years

Did not realise that QF is still flying 1st Class from HK to Australia. I was inform by the staff at QF lounge in HK, that their set up is for business class as all QF flights are from economy class to business. Also QF lounge is shared with Air France (did not think they are One World Alliance - however Sofitel runs the lounge). Air France 1st Class passenger appears to get special treatment (like reserved tables, escorted to their seats, service at their table) whereas BA 1st class passengers gets SWEET FA. Anyone care to comment
F class is a temporary fixture on this route Michael. You're right that it's generally Y, Y+, J btw Aus-HKG but when the A380 is flown I guess the bean counters at QF realise they can earn more money selling a proper F class product than give the Platinums in J class a fancy seat in the F cabin :)
Hi Eddie. Ive seen a few vids from you on various carriers and I have to say Qantas looks so cheap - the slippers are basic, the amenities bag is pretty crappy. The flight attendant that greets you in check in is very blasé, id expect a warmer greeting paying all that money. There's nothing glamourous on the plane at all or the lounges and it is quite dirty (the knob on your airvents, the inside of the drawer in the toilet) and there's no real dedication to quality finishings. Yet you remain positive about it - looks like a gloriied economy plane. Great videos they're quite understated, succint and enjoyable. Thanks Eddie :-)

Thanks for the reply Mr E and meant the J seat I booked I liked then got one up back near Prem Y and not the front near the stairs. Staff also get priority esp senior capts when travelling so less F seats for rev. Upgrade ti J from Prem Y also difficult on HK service. I commuted so returned to Chinsese carriers as elite and CZ upgrade you on booking pos space but their F is terrible
I wasn't aware that snr capts got priority seats??? Last year I flew QF1 in J and on the first leg to DXB I sat next to a QF A380 snr capt who was upgraded from Y with his wife. He said he only found out just before boarding whether his upgrade would've been approved. Sadly the upgrade to J was only for the SYD-DXB sector...the DXB-LHR one he and his wife were relegated back to Y :(
Anyways, I need to try some of the mainland carriers some day. They look to be getting more and more competitive these days!

I've been to the CX F lounge at the Wing and Pier, and they are leaps/bounds better than the QF one. I just wanted to see what the F benefits were at the QF lounge (which there aren't many!!!)

It didn't hit me when I flew, but I don't think they do an escort service on QF F. I did QF1 SYD-LHR in F recently and they didn't escort me as well....hmmm. Systemic issue with QF F? A faux pas by industry standard I suppose, but honestly I don't mind. I know how to get around the plane ;)

Even though a good stroll from any of the CX lounges, the F CX lounges are more private and great bathrooms and many J QF Plats also use them. Have used this service as full P and when in J try to upgrade but to no avail several times but aware that P cabins are full of staff non rev. Fly the SQ and KE classes frequently as they do acknowledge full P pax and QF HK still owe me a refund from a while ago and hope they read this . Best wishes and safe travels and your reviews are very good but I await the ties you get delayed/downgraded/wrong seat/ticket refund etc etc etc

On a J ticket many upgrade with points and priority which you would have but not confirmed till 24 hours before a yes or no. I id this and lost my better J seat
The upgrade lottery is in fact a lottery! The chances are normally good if you are Plat and get in early, but there are no guarantees.

I originally booked business class on the 747...but after a while the equipment changed to an A380 so I paid to upgrade to first class. I think if booked outright, QF had a first class sale at the time - I recall $4500 AUD return??? Something like that.
If you're QF gold or platinum, you have a good chance of scoring a points upgrade. But I didn't want to play that lottery game ;)

Nice video! Qantas First Class could use some improvements though. Seemed more like a really good Business Class.
I appreciate the feedback NYC Flyer. The product is more than 10 years old and QF is in the process of upgrading it in the next year or two. I'm reluctant to believe they'll introduce something grand like the EY Apartment or SQ Suite - but I hope I'm wrong!
I've yet to try BA First Class which I've heard is a super Business Class - I reckon QF First is a step higher than that.

I've seen reviews of LH F, and while the cabin hard product doesn't excite me on first impression, all the bloggers seem to really enjoy the experience. The gate transfer in a Mercedes S-class is over the top...but it should be mandatory for first class! :)
Agree with many of the comments that Qantas is a poor option if you do indeed have a choice. Qantas has for too long dined out on its impeccable safety record, but these days pretty much all airlines are as safe to fly with. In economy class the only positive with Qantas is the fun, friendly, laid-back and jokey attitude of most of the cabin crew....you don't get that on the Asian airlines. However, the Asian airlines' cabin crew tend to have a better eye for detail, they are more polite, courteous, deferential and careful. I live in Kazakhstan these days and I fly the national airline a lot (Air Astana)....and even their food is superior to Qantas (economy, anyway). They take off on time too which Qantas rarely does. Unfortunately, being ex-USSR, Air Astana treat you like you are an annoying inconvenience....takes a brave soul to dare to ask for anything that isn't coming around. I'm hoping the concept of "customer service" will arrive here one day. Thanks for the video Eddie.
Thanks for your comment Paul. Qantas definitely has an spotless safety record since entering the jet age, but as you point out so do a handful of other airlines as well. The chance of being in an aviation accident is very low these days, thanks to the safety culture ingrained into the industry. I guess one thing that reassures me about Qantas is that if there's an in-flight incident, the crew appear very professional and competent in dealing with the matter. A good example is the QF 32 incident over Singapore - could've easily ended up in disaster, but the excellent flying skills of those on the flight deck landed the A380 back on the ground with everyone safe on board :)
Does Qantas have wifi in flight? Perhaps they have wifi for first class, but not for coach?

@@eddiekhoo2046 I don't think they have wifi on all of their aircrafts. It is pretty poor for a national carrier.
I've been on one of the domestic 737s with free wifi on board. The connection was actually quite usable, but the flight was only an hour so I didn't end up using it much.

Hello Ryan. Under the lounge access rules, QF F passengers are allowed to access the CX F lounges. Unsurprisingly the check-in staff tell you as a F passenger to go to the QF lounge instead, and don't advertise the CX F lounge access for cost-saving reasons (ie. every time a passenger goes to a CX lounge, QF has to pay them!).
I just wanted to see what perks I got in the mixed QF lounge - not much it seems. Next time I'll definitely take the time to wander to the Pier lounge :)

Correct, passengers in the A seats don't need to share the aisle with anyone else. The other aisle has twice the number of people using it. So less privacy!

I can't believe Qantas First passengers don't get their own lounge in Hong Kong. This is really a very low standard. Other airlines have cigar rooms, direct lounge to air bridge access, completely enclosed private seating, and much more personalised service (e.g. remembering and serving your favourite drink). This guy (the greeter) basically pointed you to a bunch of tables seated adjacent to a high traffic zone. Like it or not, Qantas First passengers have to mingle with all types of status passengers in that lounge (including those travelling in economy), and it's far from exclusive. Definitely not inviting for the affluent customer who wants a special experience.
Their first cabin is also about 15 years behind the competition.

Lol. Starving for a day before the flight and the day after the flight normally does the trick :p
Oh and see if they compensate you for a double downgrade they cause and the trouble it brings then Prem Y in middle seat and funnily Prem Y service better than J. As Plat they never reply to me as they think I live in Australia but reside/work in HK and China. CX will pay you if you wait at gate and then do not like bags being unloaded but prem travel should not be like that but it happens and we accept that esp if travel very frequently.

So sad to see them go. I remember a time when I'd go to the airport and you'd see rows and rows of 747s. And half my flights would've been on them :(

I am sure what you say is correct and seems a dark art as they say but I have been on plenty of flights wth senior staff and deadheading crew but I agree that Chinese carriers are getting better and good safety record and I flew mainland carriers 55 times last year esp CZ and MF
I also hope the level of English is getting better with the crew. Having a non-English speaking crew is OK for normal flying...but if there's a delay or incident, it's gonna be a hassle trying to sort it out when the crew struggle with the language! :s

Ive flowen on better carriers and am not a fan of QF first class.Once again a skinny seat for us bigger travelers.Thumbs up to Singapore Airlines and the food.Neil Perry needs to go his menus suck.Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Emirates leave Qantas for dead when it comes to menu choices.

While the food was OK on this flight, I wonder if QF needs to reevaluate its relationship with Neil Perry. While he has done wonders for the in-flight and lounge catering, over the years the food has been hit-and-miss and at times lagging behind the food on Virgin Australia.
SQ is probably the best quality F experience thus far. EY and EK have great F products too but they aren't as polished as SQ in my opinion. EY does have the best F class hard product, while the EK shower experience is top notch.
Need to try JAL and TG F class - heard many good things about them :)

Well known by their reputation on discrimination against Asian, their service had been going downhill since 2009. The airlines survived under their citizen's pride and support. That will not be my choice unless there are no other options.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. There's plenty of competition on the SYD-HKG route fortunately - direct flights include CX and VA, and for indirect flights there's plenty of options. I've done CX and VA and they are both great alternatives to QF.

The Neil Perry food can be a bit overhyped and a let down, but this year it's been alright.
The new Business Suites are decent but sadly not on all their aircraft - yet.
Service wise it can be hit and miss, but my other recent QF F flight to LHR on QF1 was spot on.
