- Hey it's my first top listing ever! It's a bit weird for a first top 10, but honestly I was never one for doing the straightforward. There'll be more Super Mario Sunshine things where this came from (eventually; this one took way longer than I expected)!
So if my explanation for an "Unintended Maneuver" is confusing you, it's basically A) an alternative way of doing something and/or B) doing something that seems impossible. It's a bit ambiguous, but I think you'll agree all, if not most of these are "Unintended Maneuvers".
Written statement of criteria:
1. Difficulty
The more technical the maneuver is, the higher it will appear on this list.
2. Significance
The more this affects your gaming experience, the higher it will appear on this list. Positive impacts such as getting a shine or taking a shortcut are favored over negative impacts such as death.
3. Style
The most arbitrary criteria on this list, the cooler this maneuver looks and is, the higher it will appear on this list.
If two entries have the same score, then the one with more points in a higher criteria takes precedence.

I kid you not, that exact goopy inferno skip was how I thought you had to do it when I was 4 years old. I never knew until a couple years ago that you were actually supposed to use the underground maze haha

Somehow as a 5 year old the only strategy I could find was pulling the water like in the video

One thing I love about Sunshine is how many different ways players can solve the challenges the game offers them, I enjoyed seeing how you chose to handle these challenges!

Hey just so yall know, Polluted Piranhas are always right next to a spot where you can hit them without taking any damage. The statue one can be fought from right in front of the Serena Beach entrance. Lighthouse one is right next to a building you can stand on, as is the shine shop one. Bianco Hills one can be fought from atop the tight rope behind it.
You guys keep saying this guy talks so slow, so just adjust the playback speed to 1.25
This. The video's a lot more enjoyable at 1.25.

This is the kind of stuff I like to watch when it comes to Super Mario games. Mario is so good at platforming that there are almost countless ways to skip sections of levels, and this is the case in every 3D Super Mario game.
Also, Nintendo should release a public apology for that pachinko machine.
The worst part of the Pachinko is how the physics work. Most of the time when you hover, Mario stops midair wherever he is, but with with Pachinko the game is like, "Nah man, you flying over there. Deal with it."
Caleb Jaaniste Sega apologized for '06, Nintendo should follow suit of that pachinko machine.

you know for number 1 you can just jump out of the water spin wall jump and hover to the shine
Really? I tried that for the life of me and just could not get it. I'll have to try it again!
If you press A with the control stick pointing up, then immediately press A with the control stick in the neutral position, you can jump while moving forward, which lets you do a wall jump
to get the river of death shine i just hover nozzle across, ignoring the lily pad completely although you need to use flood sparingly
pretty sure u can just charge a rocket nozzle in the water then jump out of the water just before it fires

Hey! I know it's not much coming a year after. But I personally had a lot of fun watching all of your videos. They're super charming in a unique way, and the effort put into them is very apparent. If you ever come back to content creation on youtube, I'll definitely be looking forward to tuning in and and being an active fan or help if need be

And yet, it is arguably the most important part; what's the point of a video if you have nothing to say? I'm confident I'll improve, and comments like these inspire me to break that barrier all together.
Your number 2 was literally the only way that I had ever known how to complete that shine.. Or the only way I know of now, and the only way that I ever did it.
Why is everyone disliking this? If you think the video's too slow, put it on 1.25 or 1.5 speed! This video does nothing to deserve this Like/Dislike ratio! I get that there are better ways of doing some things in the video, but this is really good for one of his first videos!
I did that Gooper Blooper strategy all the time - I thought it was the correct "way to fight it"! Also discovered the Goopy Inferno skip on my own; didn't even think about using the stuff below the village!

When I was little, I thought the only way to beat the stage was by using the lake lol, I know about the damage boost now, but I was so stupid when I was little lol

I was the same way! It wasn't until I picked sunshine up again a few years back that I figured out the actual solution

I've actually pulled off #1 about a month ago with a friend, I thought too that it was impossible until I tried spin jumping and got close enough to convince me it could be done. Only when I did it I got there by diving, and got scared that I'd fall off like a dummy after finally reaching it, but it ended with cheers that it actually worked. Gonna have to link that friend this video. XD

ZorastarGaming And also doing the same trick with Yoshi makes getting to the poison river less of a pain to wait for by snagging a boat midway, at least by my experience. XD

Or you can just wall jump it and use the hover. That's what I did.

i don't even use the lily pad for that 1, i just flood across, but you have to be careful not to use all of it
I tried this a long time before watching this video, and when I did it and got back to the respawned lily pad I still died😂
And I also have done the pachinko one
I know this is late but you can just clip through the water at the end and run underwater. Jump up slightly to grab the coins as jumping fully kills you. To get the shine, go the the beginning and backflip onto the platform then ride the lily to the shine. To get into the water head to the end, jump of the platform ( I find it easier if you Jump off backward) and hover into the poison but make sure to be mostly underneath. Now you can do whatever and sliding even works!

As a younger kid, I didn't realize that the underground was a thing (nor did I know about triple jumping), so I did the lake glitch except I back flipped to the bamboo side more to the left, jumped on the box with a coin, then jumped to fludds area. I love that maneuver as I had never felt more accomplished in a video game up to that point.

So, fun fact, both of the skips for "The Goopy Inferno" are actually in the official Mario Sunshine guide book
For a mechanic that only appeared in one game, pulling water with your body feels like a slightly intended easter-egg route and is by far the easiest way to beat the Goopy Inferno shine.
That's how I did it as a kid. Seeing the true way made me feel dumb.

I did the goopy inferno trick on my first try back when I first got the game! I didn't realise there was another way until like 2 weeks ago.

On number #1.
There is easier way to this.
If you jump out of the water with few speed, you can wall-jump.
So the plan is jump out of the water and hug the wall at the peak of your jump.
You should be able to wall-jump and quickly us hover-nozzle to backward hover to the platform.
Idk if i can call it a glitch but it's amazing way to get extra height without doing triple jump (or gain even higher height if you manage a triple jump)
For the Pachinko one, all you need is Rocket Storage.

That Toxic Lily Pad one is debatable considering you mention that a new lily pad will respawn if you go back to the start.

IDK if you still read comments on old vids but watching these sunshine videos is like delving into a archive of information/weirdness on this game that NO ONE has covered. I’m still get just as giddy as I did back then for how you got on top of pochinco or your newer vids that are like cinematic masterpieces. :p IDK I can’t think of someone else that looks at a game till one of them drops over and talks about the ins and outs of tiny portions for hours with new things to say, or talks about one of my favorite games in general. So even if this isn’t seen or whatever I just want to say thanks for making such amazing, and bizarre content. One of my favorite things.

Possible reason why the banana is in a different spot at the end: Apparently there are multiple Delphino Plazas within the game, and the game decides which one to load based on how many shines you have, or possibly other flags. (Redfuzzydice did a video on this I believe, with the mysterious yellow Toad out of bounds.) So it's possible that in the earliest instance of Delphino Plaza, that banana was in a slightly different spot, and then when the developers started testing the whole Yoshi boat riding part in the later instances of Delphino Plaza, they decided it made more sense to move the banana over a tiny bit. And they never bothered to move the banana in the earlier Delphino Plaza, either because they forgot or they figured it didn't matter and no one would notice or care.
I think it's interesting though that Delphino Plaza isn't changing as you progress through the game, you're just loading an entirely different Delphino Plaza.

13:16 When you defeat a boss in Partners in Time
On the last one you can actually just swim and wall jump off it, but it's a bit of a tricky manoeuvre.
You have to jump a bit before you are up against the wall with the control stick set to neutral at the start of the jump, and then quickly flick towards the wall with the control stick to connect the wall jump and start hovering to grab the ledge.
Ngl I always felt bad for glooper especially when it would start crying while pulling the mouth, poor thing aint do nothing wrong except be a squid and gets constantly bullied by some Italian dude in a jumpsuit with a water hose chanting to rip its limbs off
This is one of the things I like about this game and 64. And that's the options of getting certain stars. Heck Odyssey also allows for this. For an instance you can do some fancy jumping moves to bypass certain captures yet still get a moon in an alternative way. A good example in this game I think is the path to Gooper Blooper in Rico Harbor. The intended way is to go on the boat then ride a crane to a climbing fence maze. Then navigate the maze, drop down and spray the rotor to raise the submarine then use that as a platform to spray the Jumping Bloopers/Jellyfish Bloopers and use them as platforms to get to the crane then it's simply a matter of riding the crane up to the town section and fighting the boss. However you can actually bypass a good deal of this by doing a backflip onto the smokestack of the ship then from the smokestack to a spin jump and maybe a hover to position yourself. You then can land on the upper scaffolding and then from there it's just a walk across that to the end and dropping down and you are where the long intended path would normally have taken you ready to face Gooper Blooper. And there are even options for the episode where you face him the second time. Do you do the intended method and rocket jump to the underside of the helipad after jumping across some boats and logs over polluted water or do you do a fancy jump and hover off a fruit vat in the town area to get to the helipad? Options.
I used the spin jump to reach those trees near the cannon instead. Spin Jump offers the longest distance I think.
Number 2 is EXACTLY what I did in that episode. I don't think I ever did it the intended way. Carrying water out of the lake was the first way I learned how to beat it, and it was so satisfying.
I wish you talked about the spam spray that speed runners do, because I have no idea how to do that consistently.

I used to know seven of them since I was a kid but I had so much hatred on the pachinko level that I could never have found it back then. I'm impressed that in these 7 there is number 2 because I find this when I was bored by doing the underworld way.
Also I've tried so hard to do the race without a blooper but could'nt find a way to do it. so thanks I can finally rest my mind. xP

As a kid, my only way of completing Goop Inferno was to USE THAT LAKE. I literally spent time doing spinjumps to make sure I cover a large vicinity and triple jump across.
Can't believe it took me like 3 years to figure out a much simpler strat.
I actually struggled with the Goopy Inferno a whole lot as a kid and I actually ended up beating it with Maneuver Number 2 on this list. I never figured out how to beat it the intended way for YEARS

I dunno if this is a trick of sorts, but I found out, recently, that the coins in the sewers of Ricco Harbor actually respawn, after you beat Gooper Blooper for the first time, even if you've already collected them, which makes it possible to get the 100 Coin Shine during the first episode of Ricco Harbor.
Also, I recently saw a streamer navigate her way up the windmill, in Bianco Hills, during the first episode and beat the first Petey Piranha boss fight before collecting the "Path to the Windmill" shine.
excuse me, but on goopy inferno, if you are doing the no hover nozzle challenge, there is a jump you have to pull from one of the yellow mushrooms attached to the giant tree. It is a frame perfect (or nearly, I can't remember) maneuver that allows you to get to the shine with nothing but mario's ability to jump. It's crazy hard and feels really good to do when you succeed.
Honestly this is the best and the single most creative mario game of all time. I hope a sequal amounts to its greatness one day
I've seen that Pachinko glitch before. Did the game grumps do that on accident? With as many times as Arin tried it and raged at it, I can see this having been one more thing for him to freak about.

I once pulled off the number 10 manuver on complete acident.
The first time i played the goopy inferno mission 2 years ago i completed it using the lake method before even knowing what i was supposed to do, i just didn't know what was the right path on the extremely scary underground segment with the monkeybars (i also found that you can walk underwater by walking down a specific ledge on the spot with the palmtree
I did #8 yesterday but with a wall jump from the water under the lowest tree.
You can also do a wall jump from the water off the platform for the 100 coin shine.

for some reason, to get the 100 coins in delfino plaza, you can get some may coins, then grab a shine in delfino plaza, for some reason, the coins in the terrain will respawn while the coin counter is staying the same... the grab the coins again and you have it.
PD: you can wall jump on the wooden platform then use hover flood to hover on top of the platform.

When I was younger, about 9 or so, I tried doing number 1 on this list (by coincidence, never saw the list until now) and then actually did it with out spin jump. You need maximum possible height early and then dive. I actually over shot it twice by holding up for too long and sliding off the platform entirely. But eventually I got JUST lucky enough to not slide off and go to a standing position and jump.
These videos are so good, that my only gripe (which i don't care too much about) is the sorta grainy microphone.
Number 7 can be made even easier. You can grab onto the ledge and just shimmy back to start with the control stick. Removing the risk of falling off.
Mario is able to move while clinging to ledges.
I think #2 is exactly how I solved that level.

Real talk, I had no idea how to do The Goopy Inferno without a guide (I somehow missed the underside of the village), so I ended up using the method you described the first time I completed it.
Unintentional on top of an unintentional: Death River - After the first trip down, if you're going to backtrack to reach the missed red coins, you might as well jump across to reach the leftover ones and hover back to the edge.

I actually did the exact same Goopy Inferno skip when I was 11 without realizing that wasn’t intended. I now realize I don’t even know the intended way to do that level.
I did the Caged Shine Sprite hover nozzle maneuver in 3D All Stars before unlocking the Rocket Nozzle in this level and for the rest of the episodes, it was always holographic.
I did notice number 7 but I couldn't tell someone who made the game made the edge that we can walk on to get back to the leaf on purpose or by accident. I did notice number 2, too. I wasn't sure how to find a way to get to the yellow mushroom but I eventually noticed Mario drips water right after he gets out of water. So I did the same thing you did but I assumed it was the correct way to get to the yellow mushroom.

Another weird mechanic i found as a kid is if you kick flip right as you begin running up the large trees like in pianta village Mario runs noticeably faster until you stop and it resets back to normal. Only use for that trick is when racing piantissmo in pianta village
For Yoshi’s Fruit Adventure I used spin jumps as Yoshi to go along the side of the mountain and on the blue platforms, I didn’t know you could spray the fish lol

18:35. It is because the Delfino Plaza is composed of a lot of stages, according to your progress. Maybe later they decided to move the bananas, but forgot to move them in the first version you see in-game. Or just decided it was unnecessary to consider that little detail
Funny thing about number 6 is that, as a kid, I honestly had no idea you could even tear off the tentacles (yes, even though you had to tear the first one off to start the fight). I always just fought Gooper Blooper this way because I thought that was how it was supposed to be done. Once I found out you could tear the tentacles off, it just felt like cheating to do so.

With number 1 you can just back up from the platform and then jump on it to do a wall jump before activating your hover to reach the top, saves you a lot of difficulty and time and it's also another unintended maneuver :)
I'm pretty sure you can do the 100 coin shine in Delfino if you use the walk underwater glitch, then triple jump into a wall jump off the platform the shine is on. Your method seems a lot easier and faster though.

darn, I thought the triple spin jump dive would have made the list, its something you don't use on a normal playthrough, but you get creative when you do the no hover nozzle challenge, because it is possible to complete the game without the hover nozzle.
