so common to convince ourselves to wait until we have the perfect vehicle and all the best equipment to take a journey... this family shows how far you can go with just the basics and the desire to explore! outstanding!
Wonderful story. Brought back many memories because I did an Land Rover overland in 1966. Now terribly sad at what has happened to the Middle East. Lovely people and great mechanics!
The guys who inspired you to do this trip, are doing it again, 64 years later, and with the original Landy too! Check out 'The Last Overland'. They set off in 10 hours from Singapore!
I enjoyed this tale of this family on an incredible journey. We just completed our first Long-Term Overland trip. 506 days driving from California to Panama and back. One learns so much traveling like this. We are hooked and we are already planning the next big trip.
Wow California to Panama must have been pretty amazing!! I'm sure you have many crazy stories to tell :) Thanks for checking out the video and happy future travels!
A fabulous adventure that can never be taught in a classroom.. One of my all time favourite trips was to Myanmar .. some spectacular places to see in the world.. Thanks for sharing :-)
I'm so happy you guys enjoyed your experience! And it's great to hear from the kids, their point of views being heard means a lot. I myself could never have done this. Too many sensitivities, food allergies and other issues just being a female would not be great for anyone else in that car. I would be annoyed and I would annoy everyone else.
This goes to show what amazing adventures you can have in this world ,in September I'm driving from UK to Poland then across to Portugal nothing like this trip but better than sitting in turkey for two weeks just getting pissed with people you don't like. And doing this in a old Honda CR-V .
Exploring Alternatives I'm living it, just working towards a van, been on the road doing my research, so when I get better situated my branch out area will grow. Right now I cover an area video logged over 100's thousands of square miles. All Van island , Fraser Valley , BC interior , PG , Hwy's 1. 3. 5. 7. Is Hwy, and so on. Some day up deep north explore into my choice of research. PS, thank you for your great show you've developed here, I've been here since your 2 in it's beginnings ... cheers from Ian A aka Tinman. (Tinman is because I had to own my severe Tinnitus disease)
So Awesome , it's so nice to see a family traveling together. It shows that the world is not as dangerous as mainstream media would have us believe. thanks for the video.
Very impressed they picked up a Series I for $300. Wonderful vehicles. I wouldn't want to travel the world sitting in the back though... me and mates used to get dropped at rugby games by my Dad, we'd all rush to the loo as soon we got there.
The 2 places where you had to cross a significant body of water was the English channel & the Strait of Malacca- one near the beginning, the other near the end of the trip.
Amazing and impressive.... a hard and challenging trip on the worst possible vehicle you could chose, and you did it all the way and with your family: that's the spirit, you have set an example to others :)
Awesome over landing video . About a awesome trip . Just get out there and travel overland ,one life live it . Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A.
These folks missed a beautiful country, when they skipped Pakistan. Spoken by a woman who travelled solo to Pakistan(it was my first time traveling out of North America, what an adventure!!) first in my mid 40s, and later returned to live there for a year. Beautiful and welcoming people, fascinating history and a diverse landscape. All that being said, I doubt Pakistan is going to become a travel destination any time soon, it's definitely not for everybody. Is it sometimes a challenging place? Absolutely. But, as with many places…the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Given the hype in the media your precaution was absolutely justified. But hope you visit Pakistan someday, and catch up on what you missed. Hope you arrive with an empty stomach. You wont regret it. :) May peace be with you.
I am really sorry to hear this family had to detour away from Pakistan. Pakistan has had to fight terrorism within its borders, and amazingly it has been pretty much eradicated now. Our Army has taken drastic actions against the terrorists and bandits the family feared, which makes it spectacularly safe now. I hope you people visit Pakistan someday and see how things have changed around here. May peace be with you.
Great journey. Lubblyjubbly! We should all undertake a life experience to understand those around us. Looks like an old Landy Series 2 (?) Wow, that's a brave trip in something that old! Grab a Defender or a Landcruiser if you want to join the overland experience.
Wow! What an amazing trip...especially for the kids. Kinda funny that the children had to read and study their school work so they could "learn" . They learned more in this trip then any school could ever teach.
This is the trip I always wanted to do before I die. Is it possible to share your itinerary and the process in getting all the relevant permit/documents approved?
@Steve Prince Exactly! That's why I dragged my sons pillar to post around the planet. And not just holiday. I wanted them to have a global perspective and it worked!
You know what, life can sometimes be hard and you don't always feel your best. But always remember at least your not one of the people whose frame of mind led to them thumbing down this video.
These are some brave people to travel to those places with such a junky vehicle. I would be afraid to travel just in the U.S. alone without an almost new vehicle .
The old car is more likely to break down, but possible to fix anywhere at all, with simple tools. A brand new vehicle - you'd be stuck if anything at all goes wrong. I passed someone in a 2018 Audi SUV the other day, something had gone wrong with the electrics and the vehicle had immobilised itself... no fixing that in Myanmar.

Amazing how you guys managed the trip without vicious quarrels owing to the very tight confinement. Must have been a great bonding experience. Cheers!

OMG! The Land Rover defender! True classic! And total dream car one day. Great video too!
Thanks Grace :)
This was a Land Rover Series I I think - the original LR which after the Series III got rebadged as the Defender. So it is a very old car indeed.
Man, you guys are soooo good at curating the most interesting and inspiring stories and people! High five to another great video! :)
Thanks so much Gen, it's great to hear positive feedback like this :) :)

Very well done showing considerable fortitude especially for scaredy cat Americans.
Well, technically they are Americans; North Americans, that is. Canada is part of North America.
