The Land Rover Series III Is Equipped For Adventure

  • This story comes in partnership with Belstaff as we hit the dunes in a Land Rover Series III.
    As a car photographer who shoots for many of the big auction houses, Mr. Pawel Litwinski is no stranger to the world of vintage Bugattis, Ferraris, and Porsches-cars defined by their elegant lines and frightening top speeds. On any given day, Pav can be found shooting anything from a 1932 Daimler Double-Six in one corner of the United States to a Jaguar D-Type on the opposite side of the continent. If he’s at home in California, however, odds are you’ll find Pav in the seat of a ride defined by its simplicity: his 1973 Land Rover Series III.
    Growing up in Coney Island, New York, Pav saw plenty of sports cars on the city streets but what he really wanted was a vehicle that would go over everything. Oh, and he had one other demand: it had to have a tire on the hood. After a couple decades of waiting and dreaming, Pav now has his Land Rover and the two are inseparable, so much so that even when he found himself in financial straits a few years ago-during which time he even had to sell his primary camera and his Subaru STi-Pav refused to part with his beloved Land Rover.
    Nowadays, if Pav isn’t throwing a ladder into the back of the Land Rover and grabbing his gear while rushing to a photo shoot, he’s bouncing over the dunes at Pismo Beach on the Central California coast. But wherever he goes, be assured that on his face is the biggest smile you’ve ever seen.

    Totally built for adventure! Nothing quite like driving a series. An experience that brings a smile to your face every time.
    If your car doesn’t make you smile, it’s just an appliance.

      [chuckle] They are a bit harder to tip over than you think. I can remember being in one with my grand dad when I was about 4 or 5, and I was TERRIFIED, because I was sure it was about to tip over, but the old man knew what he was doing... I seem to remember a warning that it was pretty much guaranteed to drive along a 40 degree slope, but not a 45. You could tip them over, but then a lot of passenger sedans of the 60s you could tip over at least that easily as well... You go find an original late 50s or early 60s VW and see how hard that is to tip over. I'll give you a hint, it's not all that hard....

      They look pretty good with roll bars and sports seats. But if you've got a near original 73 series III, dont mess with it. Too many of them have been butchered. I've got an '04 90 I've had for 12 years. Looks pretty damned near the same apart from the front grill recess. I'll never sell it.

      winkel1979 What??!!

    • @duck853
      @duck853 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      winkel1979 Probably meant NAS Series 3 (North American Series).

    • @Lawrence5987
      @Lawrence5987 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Joseph Divar Land Rover themselves denoted these Series 3 Land Rovers for the American and Canadian markets as NADA Land Rovers, NADA standing for North America Dollar Area. As for the Defender which arrived on the American market in 1994, these vehicles where designated NAS 90's and 110's by Land Rover. The NAS meaning North American Specification.
      I hope that helps?

    • @duck853
      @duck853 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lawrence5987 Thanks, for some reason I only remember them using NAS. Been quite a long time since I've dusted off my Rover material. I printed out ECRs guide Series Rovers 15-years ago and took it to Kinko's to have it bound. I'm sure it's in there, what's it stand for again?

The FJ or BJ diesel here in Aus is an option, but IMHO, just not as cool as the series 2 or 3 swb. much easier to get a toyota though, so I might just go that way.

    Nice to see this one being used for work, albeit a very different sort of work to what Rover originally intended!
    For the 66 years The Land Rover has been around, they've all just quietly gotten on with Useful Things.

    Love Pawel's enthusiasm for his Land Rover, I have a 109 and they do get under your skin. I noticed that he pushed the yellow knob down when he engaged low box with the red lever. Does he know that there is no need to push the yellow knob down for low box? Engaging low box automatically engages 4WD. The yellow knob is for engaging 4WD in high box only.
    Thanks for the video, I've watched it more than once, it always cheers me up.

    I know that smile. I had it when I was 17-years old and test drove my first Series Rover. Only an enthusiast knows that smile on a fellow enthusiast. Not many people understand it's not about the latest electronically-controlled-this-or-that, or whether something has three different traction control modes for just wet. I most recently had the same grin on my face after trading in my technologically superior Japanese sportbike for a '97 Ducati. It's brutal ergonomics, gutturally primal cacophony of mechanicals had me, and still have me grinning ear to ear every day I ride.
    Life has gotten in the way of currently owning my own Series Rover, but after seeing Litwinski's infections smile I may have to re examine my list! Great video.

    I love my Land Rover Series III. You either love them or loath them, however these vehicles have stood the test of time unlike many imitators (and I know the original Land Rover was based on the WW2 Jeep) and it is said 70% of all Landies built are still on the road today. Definitely amoungst the greatest cars ever produced. Most of the ney-sayers I would imagine are from the USA, where there are plenty of excellent vehicles to choose from, but in most European, African and Australasian countries, Land Rover held the crown until British Leyland ruined things and Toyota came onto the scene.
    To quote Richard Hammond, "A Land Rover would never turn up to collect an Oscar, it would be far to busy doing something important, somewhere, for someone".

    Tengo un Land Rover Santana militar restaurado. 6cil y 3500cc diésel. Disfruto mucho llevando esta joya de más de 40 años. Son coches muy especiales.

    I like the people who say "scenester or hipster" because they are the ones who have no idea what liking something different or unique is about. One thing the Landie has over a similiar year 4x4 is the body panels are an aluminum alloy. No ugly diamond plate plastered over this 4x4.

      That's pretty funny, anyone who has ever owned an English car ever knows that their car is at least 50% rust :)

      only the chassis or other aluminium parts were steal is in contact with, because of lack of maintenance, you did a poor choice on the car to restore then :S
