I did this exact same thing about 35 years ago. Took a year off with my girlfriend and traveled all over the USA, parts of Canada & Mexico. Traveled through all the states except Alaska, Hawaii and N. Dakota. My setup was very similar to this one. Had a Toyota 4X4 regular cab with a camper shell. We weren't working though, just tourists! It was the best year of my life, I'm now 65! This brought back so many memories. They are exactly correct about the nice people you run into at these places you visit. Was with my girlfriend 7/24/365! We actually got a long well for the whole trip. I also did this several times solo & not solo for several months previous to my year trip. If you aren't encumbered and adventurous do this!
When she spoke about the mayor being so welcoming to them on a bad day I started tearing up!!! I have found the same hospitality from people time and again living on the road and in a Skoolie.
Trust me, to have a camper shell on a truck is great. I use my 2003 tacoma as a stealth camper when I travel. I bought a Hightop shell for my truck for 100.00 a few years back, and I can sit up if I need to. But I loved your video, and I plan to travel alot next year with resources I have on my truck, and wish yall the best.
In this era of cold hearted social media dominance, I really appreciate the kindness for others that you have both given and received. We can be many things to each other and we all need to be more of what you are embodying. Thank you and good travels.
I love this! My boyfriend and I lived out of a Prius! Yes, a Prius with a dog too. Now we are getting ready to live in a Ford Transit van! We are super excited to get back on the road!
MAK and Owen are such bright and conscious people. It is always a huge treat to be able to interact in one manner or other with folks like these. All the best to all of you. And, as suggested somewhere below, perhaps they should consider creating videos for YT based on their adventures? I am positive that they would be very well received...
Wow...it's always so inspiring to see people who are so clear about what they want for themselves and their lives and aren't afraid to just go for it! Super inspired by this couple, their can do attitude and their clarity about that's really important in life and what doesn't really matter.
They are both lovely and calm and seem like a good balance to each other. To me, this is more realistic as living a simple life on the road. I do not understand the giant skoolies, buses, and mobile homes that are called mobile tiny living and packed with EVERYTHING because the amount of money spent on fuel and the exhaust does not seem sustainable or eco friendly whereas this does. I realize this type of mobile living is the other extreme and requires sacrifices, but I LOVE that they honor experiences (rock climbing, surfing, etc) over things. Although I am a city girl with a 9-5, I am a minimalist and I find this couple to be so inspirational. Thank you!
I’m so happy that my home province was such a lovely experience for you both! With the way everything has changed because of globalization, it’s nice to see that our famous Newfoundland hospitality is still alive and well!
This is literally, the exact design I envisioned for my Tacoma. I've seen so many of these truck camper videos and this is the FIRST I've seen with this design. I consider this to be the most functional one
I dont live out of truck but I vacation in it for 3 weeks in Colorado. As far as rain goes you can buy a 10 dollar tarp hook it over Yakima bars and stake it down to have a dry spot on tailgate. Also when it's cold you can drape tarp over front and rear doors then point dash heaters toward you and have a warm place to shower. I use a garden sprayer and I heat the water up on a stove. I bought a sink sprayer with a 3 foot hose then cut the other sprayer off attached the 2 together with niple and hose clamps that way I can set sprayer on ground and hold sprayer above head.
I miss living in my F-150. Wake up with the sunrise beside the lake, make a quick breakfast, then go to the Community Center for a work out and shower, head to work.
We started with our Toyota T-100 and a homemade camper that we lived and traveled in for two years. Currently in a small sailboat to save up and make some changes to the camper for more full time living and working as digital nomads. We definitely didn’t spend a lot on the first build and we plan to keep it cheap on the second one. The 2nd generation Tacoma’s are on our short list, but even used are not cheap. I been following these guys from the sidelines and surprised/not surprised they gave up on the sun raider so fast. Looks like they are having a nice time for now with the Tacoma.
Climbers and surfers are often the most basic and down to earth people. I really like this couple’s attitude and advise. Their current rig is amazing (check out their blog).
This couple is so inspirational and I respect them so much. Just as I learned from other rv'ers videos, they knew they would be forced to spend more time socializing and/or living outside among all the beauty of nature. Then, starting at 5:40, she actually repeated what I heard so many times from other rv'ers. Meanwhile, I tracked all the so called "advice" comments on a hundred other video comment sections as they so often demean the "rv lifestyle". So many commenters keep talking about "no toilet and/or shower", among other things. Last I checked, human nature thinking is proven to be more about conformity versus self teaching. But teaching that material takes way more than one paragraph. For so many people, it takes more than their entire lifetime. Notice how many wealthy people spend their time hitting a little round ball on an open field to eventually 'putt' the little round ball in a hole.....as they pay over 75 dollars to do this. Want 50 more examples? Someone should force these wealthy "geniuses" to walk the golf course versus paying to ride a cart. Just watch how they suddenly won't like their outdoors "sport" called golf. These same rich geniuses need a minimum of four bathrooms and up to 10 bathrooms in their luxury estate homes. Hmmmmm.... Who's really smarter? Who's really living life to the fullest? Who acts more 'down to earth'? Who do you want as a good friend? Fake friends come so easy. Real friends like these people have already learned to get away from the rat race. Good luck getting paired up with a twosome like this at your local expensive country club. You will be hardpressed to find rare people like this who think so highly of spending an expensive few hours hitting a ball towards a hole. Keep nitpicking at people like this all you want. You won't fool the 'real' much wiser people who know so much more than the majority of others here constantly yapping about creature comforts. That reality can't be taught in a comment section.
Love this. I live full time in a 24’ camper and building this week my truck into a sleep in unit which I’m so excited about. Sleeping in it next week. Lots of adventures to see and do.
Wow. This is really beautiful. You inspire me. I love how warm and friendly people are in your adventurous lifestyle. What a way to enjoy life. Thank you.
Now that's living. They seem so happy and contented. Can you tell I'm envious...but I must keep moving toward my kind of happiness, I guess. Thanks for your videos, and please keep them coming.
I’ve got a similar setup on a Ranger. The biggest pro to this arrangement is being to drive through tougher terrain than what would be allowable in a full size van.
Great to see simple settings! I use to live for a year in a large 2wd wagon car in Australia and it was just perfect. You don't need more. And I was driving everywhere even on crazy dirt tracks in the wilderness. I reckon a bit boring when it rains but librairies are good shelters ;) I'm now just with a simple hatchback tent and a car and before I lived in a discarded sailboat in New Caledonia. Simple and frugal living, close to nature!
In my younger years, enjoyed car camping on extended weekends and holidays. Such freedom has its rewards. However, I found living on the move after several weeks at a time became more a mission of survival than living. I've gotten soft in my retirement years where I want ready access to a clean shower and a flushable toilet. Still considering buying a small travel trailer for trips in my OEM tow package equipped Jeep. Long as MAK & Owen appreciate and enjoy their minimalist lifestyle, go for it.
I left my comfy wall st career 3 years ago and moved back to the country and been living in my 2500HD with camper shell for 1 year. For the first time in my life im really enjoying life and stress free. dating is hard given my way of thinking now but overall i love it.
Big admirer of truck dwelling. You need to be outdoorsy and able to work remotely for this to be viable, from what I'm seeing, but I love the ease of it. Props to this couple for sharing such a small space!
My wife and I tried this setup in a Tundra for 2 weeks! We went to Glacier Park and it wasn’t for us. Middle of the night calls from Mother Nature were pure hell, trying to get out and back in. And yes we tried the jug thing, not too good!
You have to have a reason to do it. 2 weeks in the same spot isbt really worth it. Might as well have a camper. If you are looking to travel all over on a whim regularly you'll want simplism and a more "stealth" setup.
Freckles and your partner - you CORRECTLY live on this Planet! Right !!! I do not know how this protocol arose in you - BUT FOR ME YOU ARE ATTRACTIVE BY 190%. I get a sincere pleasure to see your faces and listen to the words in which you draw up your lovely narratives .. GOOD LUCK AND OPTIMISM !!!

Ive travelled like this with my 1991 Toyota pickup many times. Never more than a week or two at a time though. That takes some commitment. Very simple way to get around though, nothing about the vehicle will hold you back.
My kids and I do that now! Except, not "living" per se because of the ex-husband. We have a tent we set up if the wind, time, etc. is right and a 5gal porta potty that pretty much goes wherever/whenever we do. ;)
Great attitudes! Super inspiring. I'm sure there are many ups and downs to this kind of living, but as long as there are more ups than downs it can be done! I'm looking forward to just get out on week long trips, (or longer), now that I'm retired. Good luck and enjoy life!
With motion and graphic design, file sizes are (often) huge. How do you make this work at a (5 megabit upload max) coffee shop? No doubts that you make it happen-just, how do you do upload 5 gigs to a client-on a random Tuesday before a 9:30am deadline?
great video and very interesting - we moved into our van 8 months ago and mid 2019 we're planning to buy a similar 4x4 to convert and drive around the world in 2020 - got some more design ideas watching this :) Chris & Marianne
That’s pretty cool! You guys are living full lives, most people are living a life of misery! Happy you two figured out that life is meant to experience life not collect stuff that rots and has to be thrown away!
MeesterVegas it just an overhead awning. Faster and easier! That’s next for me on my truck! But for now I find I totally have enough living space in my back seats or aka my “living room”
Cool set up! Interesting life! The places to go and see :) Thank goodness I’m caffeine free since 1996. I never have to worry about caffeine cycles anymore and I can just get up and go. Saves me money and a huge relief I’m not anchored down by addiction. It makes life so much more enjoyable and free. Even on cold days I do just fine no need for anything warm to start my day. It’s a true freedom that I can’t put into words.
I don't know if you have the space but we carry a pop up 8 x 8 foot canopy with 4 walls that hovers over the back of the truck just for extra space and a temp living room. Lately I rigged an on demand hot water propane tank that hangs over a changing tent when you are really in an area with no amenities just for showering.
Love this video so much!! One day we will be living that way. It's nice to see people that have that passion for life and go and live it. So inspiring and great video keep it up guys.
I think if you have the right partner then this kind of living would be a fun adventure! If I tried this on my own I would be bored senseless quite quickly.
I honestly think after a number of "bored senseless" days, you start to go out and find things to do, whether it be walking, exploring a new area, finding somewhere to dine or simply somewhere nice and cosy to sit and read a book or browse the net. But then I am somewhat of a loner myself so totally happy on my own anyway.. (also single) Seems like a stress free life to me. only down side for me is, my career choice can't be done on the move so I'd still have to travel to work daily. Actually thinking I could happily live in my RV as long as I could tow a small car behind it to get to work and back but I currently live in amongst WAYYYYYYY to many things that would probably take a couple of years to pack up and sell up if I did..
Very cool video. I bought a cap for my truck for 100$ the other day, its a high rised one. Gonna try some camping with it this year.. just simple and easy to go on a road trip.
Several cliche's are in order here; two peas in a pod (Tacoma), on the same page, go together like peanut butter and jelly, etc. My first truck was a 1999 Tacoma, but needed to upgrade to the Tundra. Glad you found them, so we could find them!
What I want to know is how you keep your perishables? If you want to be able to have a nice fresh meal but not have to go somewhere to buy at the market every single night? It would be helpful if they would have talked about what they eat....
Have they consider installing an ARB awning? You have the room on your cross bars and you could also buy the anex room that attaches to it to work in and get out of the rain. Might be the solution rather then selling your vehicle.
would definitely love to do this but I have a daughter so we usually only get a weekend at a time waiting for her to turn 3 then I think we could tackle a week.

I think if you have the right partner then this kind of living would be a fun adventure! If I tried this on my own I would be bored senseless quite quickly.
@OG Herefano 😆
OG Herefano 😂
Where a dog comes in handy!
Look at your right hand, or left hand if you are left-handed....
Those are your five best friends!!
Very cool video. I bought a cap for my truck for 100$ the other day, its a high rised one. Gonna try some camping with it this year.. just simple and easy to go on a road trip.
Ya might think of getting an overland roof top tent with a 270 degree awning with sides...its compact and gives you tons more living space
Several cliche's are in order here; two peas in a pod (Tacoma), on the same page, go together like peanut butter and jelly, etc.
My first truck was a 1999 Tacoma, but needed to upgrade to the Tundra. Glad you found them, so we could find them!
Now these people are living! Break us out of this electronic trance!
David Samuel Peckinpah agreed! I live in my Tacoma with my dog and it’s the best!
@MITLOML Exactly. I think people just like to sound inspirational. While typing on an electronic device, after watching a streaming video. Hmm.
Ok then stop commenting on youtube. Otherwise you are contributing to the electronic trance.
there are a lot of attachable awnings and even full base camp style covers you could look into to face the rain
What a great life! I would add a bike rack off the hitch for a dual sport motorcycle for more exploring.
Really inspiring and interesting story! Thanks for making the video!
Kudos to you guys! I simply could not do it because hygiene is very important to me. Stay safe, love life.
It might be a challenge when it's that time of the month.
I love those pull out cabinets running through the back of the truck whrer can you buy them and what are they called?
Heya.......I'm glad y'all found each other.......very refreshing !!
Please tell me how to find drawers like that...! They also have great handles/locks. Info would be great!
That story with the mayor at the end was lovely
I have to ask where did you get those overalls!?
I could be wrong, but they look like Carhartts
What I want to know is how you keep your perishables? If you want to be able to have a nice fresh meal but not have to go somewhere to buy at the market every single night? It would be helpful if they would have talked about what they eat....
That Toyota camper in the beginning is sweet. I have never see one. Only the two wheel drive ones that were low. Did that have a 4 cylinder?
Have they consider installing an ARB awning? You have the room on your cross bars and you could also buy the anex room that attaches to it to work in and get out of the rain. Might be the solution rather then selling your vehicle.
Breakfast looked bomb! That there is the key
Great video. Please tell me where I can purchase those great drawers you have under your bed. Thanks
It takes a special kind of person to do what you do.
You guys are awesome! True inspiration.
would definitely love to do this but I have a daughter so we usually only get a weekend at a time waiting for her to turn 3 then I think we could tackle a week.
