    Thank you so much for showing this!!! I don't know anything about chickens really & we got chicks. I didn't realize 2 of them are Cornish hens and one has a splayed leg & it's killing me! I feel horrible for her but she's much bigger than yours. How long do you think it will take to heal? If I could put a pic on here of her I would. Thanks.

      Hey! Thank you for watching. Normally it only takes a few days for the splayed legs to come back together after fixing them but on a Cornish I would suspect that would take longer. Could be up to a week. The issue with them is that they are designed to grow rapidly so the legs can be an issue to begin with. Go ahead and splint the legs, after about 3 days you can check to see how they are doing. You should see them slowly coming back together. Typically after a day or two they adjust to having their legs together and get around pretty good with the vet wrap on them. Just keep wrapping them until they come back together and don't get discouraged if it takes a little longer. Make sure you put pine shavings or something down so that they don't slip around. Let me know if you have any more questions. Hope this helped.

    Just checked my chicks and found one to have splayed legs. Thankyou so much for this video. When in a panic, consult TH-cam!

    Very informative. We have chicks after not having them for quite awhile. We’ve never had a splayed leg chick. The store owner told us something about a shot glass and of course our eyes crossed😅. So I went to TH-cam for the rescue! I didn’t have the right size hair band so my husband took a extra fuzzy pipe cleaner and loosely wrapped each end on each leg. So far it’s great, but he did get some small thin hair ties and later we will put both feet in loop and use about 1” wide bandaid to wrap between legs. Miss Penny is a Rhode Island Red and she is resting comfortably in her own box Inside listening to a Spring Peepers CD on low😂😂😂. I will change out the pipe cleaner hobble later to the hair band as I think it’s a bit too restrictive and heavy as I did see her resting with her feet out behind her and flat on chest and neck. I put a temperature controlled seed heating mat Halfway under cardboard box set at 85*F and put paper towel on bottom of box. A small saucer of water tilted a bit and a flat rock in saucer so she doesn’t drown. I can only imagine how hobbling might feel and the lighter the better on small birds.
    We got the chicks Tuesday and just finished enclosing coop minutes before-don’t ask me why we waited, but it’s done. I didn’t understand about shot glass and splayed legs and now I am educated. We had cold night last night and one more before FINALLY SPRING warmth arrives- Hooray!
    Lol, my husband took the original 20 Reds home and I was at store and did some shopping and brought home FIVE MORE Dominiques!! 😂😂. They were a couple days older I was told, but the Reds were a bit more aggressive at first with them. Apparently Dominiques are very docile.
    Well Spring is starting out very busy and hope Miss Penny is cured soon. The worst that could happen is she learns to chirp like a frog at her rehab spa😂😂

    Unfortunately my chick is almost 4 weeks old before I saw her seriously splayed leg. She can manage walking but the leg is dragging more towards the back. Can I use your method or do I have to do something more drastic?

    This is a really tough procedure with guinea keets. With quail, I can’t imagine. Just too small to work with almost.

    • @SquareOneFarms
      @SquareOneFarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah quail are pretty small. I would imagine it would take smaller strips of vet wrap and for sure a two person job. So far we haven’t had any quail like this.

      @@SquareOneFarms I have a baby quail born 2 days ago and we attempted rubber bands, band aid but that didn't work. Just so extremely tiny. Will try a tiny piece of the vet wrap.

    Chicken lovers unite! I cannot thank you enough for this video. I thought our day old Azure Egger was just particularly leggy, but she had splayed leg. After watching your video, I also wrapped our girl (using athletic tape because everything else was sliding down around her ankles) and five days later, she's completely healed. I've got to say, one of her feet was also curled (like a peg-legged pirate pigeon you see often in cities)... a little slice of wine cork and that taped on like a little sandal, her foot unfurled and she's a running fool. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! We love Layla and you for generously sharing your knowledge! @fairhills_farms just north of the Golden Gate in CA.

    Seen so many splayed leg videos not even sure whats wrong with my chick now. Seen one with legs that fall behind the chick saw one saying its a tendon in the back of the leg you push to the back of the leg to correct it and then use the brace to help it heal in place saw this one saying the legs are spread out which mine isnt but it does drag behind it

    • @SquareOneFarms
      @SquareOneFarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it’s a slipped tendon, this method probably won’t work. Most tendon issues end up being a cull. You should know after the first 24 hours, if binding legs works, it’s most likely splayed legged.

    1145 at night, just had to do this to a black star, used a small bandaid. She is strong and feisty, she will drink if I hold her by the water, she will eat if I hold her by the food.
    I work at a feed shop and they give me all the not-so-well chicks that come in. I have 5 free chicks now that I was able to save out of 8...we just getting started too, I’ll have a nice flock by summer. I named my little splayed black star Skippy ;)

    • @SquareOneFarms
      @SquareOneFarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I'm not a vet and can't say for sure because I haven't seen it. It might be a slipped tendon and those are very painful for a chick.

    • @SquareOneFarms

      I get the vet wrap from the feed store or tractor supply. The supplement is a poultry nutrient drench, it’s sold at most tractor supply stores.

    • @SquareOneFarms
      @SquareOneFarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be a slipped tendon as well. Have you put his legs together? If so you can also try putting him in a shot glass to keep him upright until he gains his balance and a little use from his legs.

    How old was Layla at the time of this video?
    I just did the half a band-aid fix on a week and a half old baby chick and I put it below the knee joint. I hope it works. Mine isn't really splayed leg but she has a very weak left leg. I pray it works because she is my favorite. She loves being held and falls asleep in my hand. She is the only one of ten that has a name. Henrietta is what my son chose. LOL! These are also my first ever 10 chicks. 4 of them died in the beginning but thankfully the hatchery kindly replaced them. I've learned so much. Thank you so much for your video. I know I'm late in replying but I hope you'll do more chick/chicken videos!

      Layla was maybe 3 days old when we had to fix her legs and she made a full recovery. I hate to admit it but I have made “casts” for adult chickens too. Our daughter had a favorite so we went above and beyond to keep her alive as long as we could. We aren’t supposed to have favorites....but we all do!

      @@SquareOneFarms Thank you so much for your reply. I've separated my little one and she is getting up and walking around a bit not that she's not getting trampled by her siblings that are bigger than her. Your video was super helpful!
