Just bought this lens; then did some test(all shot at F8). @16MM( A tiny bit sharper than the tokina 11-16 and sharper than the Nikon 18-140} @35mm(a hair sharper than the Nikon 35mm 1.8 DX and good amount sharper than the nikon 18-140) @50mm(same sharpness as the Nikon 50mm 1.8D and good amount sharper than the Nikon 18-140) @80mm(a good amount sharper than the Nikon 85mm 1.8D and significantly sharper the Nikon 18-140) My test wasn't the most technical but i feel it was accurate. I am very happy with my purchase of the Nikon16-80.
Use with D7200 with amazing results. Dare i say its strong point maintains with some FF primes ive used. Its that good for me. Either my copy is that good, or my primes have issues. Try yourself. I recommend to every DX owner wanting one lens for vacation. No lose in quality, its killer. Can be had for sub $600.
I would think the lens is more than enough for anyone up to a 'serious enthusiast', in order to enjoy images of their family and travels. I use the 24-120 on a d700 for such and love it, looking at getting this lens for my dx body that's used for wildlife atm
The reason it's focusing is so damn noisy is because it has plastic gears in the focusing motor/drive. That's partially the difference you get buying a DX lens over an FX lens.I only shoot DX bodies (D500 currently) and only use FX lenses, better quality, faster lenses, sharper usually to the edges on DX bodies.
My biggest question. How is this lens for indoor photography in low light, typically for events? I have a Nikon D5500. Yes indeed; I am asking this in 2024.
Hi there, If you're going to choose between this two lenses. What would you choose, Sigma 17-70 mm F/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens Or Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR Lens? I' am planning to use the lens that I'am going to buy for travel, birthday party's wedding etc.. I hope that you can help me to choose what is the right/correct lens for me, by the way I've been using Nikon d5600. Thanks in advance, god bless
Well depends. If most of your low light is at 17mm, then yes because you get 2.8 and VR. If you need 2.8 at 55mm... maybe not. But the VR at low light is pretty amazing. Look at this review www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/hands-review/nikon-af-s-dx-nikkor-16-80mm-f28-4e-ed-vr-lens
What's the crop factor making 4K videos? I know that it's 2.25x using any FX lens, but I want to know what happens when I use a DX lens on the D500. Thanks.
Hi Dom, you still use your Fuji S5 pro? I sell my S5pro when i bought Nikon D600 and buy D5000 to take a lot of time lapses, but 2 mounts ago i bought back S5pro, it has awesome skin tone quality and fantastic dynamic range.
no one can compete with Fuji s5 pro to recovering highlights. unfortunately Fuji does not continue this type sensor, if they take D700 and put full frame SR sensor on it, it can be like monster in DR and take a lead in market. But they don't.
Yeah this lens is like 1000$ and the sigma 17-70 is 400$ and is a fantastic lens with great "macro" great autofocus, great vr the only complain i have is that it doesnr have manual override on auto focus but for the rest is just awesome.
Robert Robinson I'm using the 16-80 on a d5500 and I love it, honestly the only problem I have, personally, is that my large hands only feel comfortable on a larger body, I'm mainly a portraiture guy and so will be moving to Nikon FF + a few primes (the stats show I'm near to 45-55mm on a lot of shots)... so a f1.8 50mm FF prime will be good for most of my needs. however the d5500 + 16-80 is an amazing combo, especially if you want one lens for all
The lens is far from quiet and this video proves it. Around 7:40 there is a lot of focus noise. 8:08 also has obvious focus noise. Nice video but I don't see how the poster can say "it is totally quiet".
Great review. Nicely done. Cute kid. I've ordered the lens (in spite of The Angry Photographer's opinion) and am looking forward to using it. Thanks for posting this.
Not a bad lens, but feels a bit cheap when using in manual. Got a great shot with it you can see here - www.flickr.com/photos/paddyblack/29665892695/in/dateposted-public/

The Angry Photographer says this lens" SUCKS". Not worth the money!!!!!!!!!! He has a lot of bad things to say about this lens. The 17-55 is the one to get!!! His words not mine
Is this the same Angry Photographer that loved the D750 a year ago and now says an awful camera ? Give it time.....he'll change his mind. The Angry Photographer is all about negative reviews, whether it be about cameras, lens or other reviewers on TH-cam.
The problem with "Angry" is that he does not judge a lens in terms of value for money which for me at least is very important!! No point comparing this lens to the 17-55 which at least in my country is almost double the price. For me that is completely out of budget. This lens on the other hand is comparatively within budget (although still quite expensive) and also gives you better range in terms of focal length!!
I don't think anyone should spend money on this lens considering its price. Save up more and get a Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 and 50-100mm F/1.8 combo. Image quality you get will be light-year better.
+Steven Lui sigma 50-100 is £850, the 18-35 is £540, and that would require draging around 2 lenses with you and doing lens changes to get the different shots rather than just zoom like this one lens.
+dombower Maybe I'm lucky. I've bought my 1835 and 50100 at USD$ 600 and $850 respectively in my country. For the money I spent and image quality I get, changing lens doesn't bother me one bit. And they work beautifully with my D500.

The 16--80 is sharper than all my fx and dx prime lenes

Does the front element rotate as you zoom/focus? I’m planning to use some filters and this could be the deal breaker for me~
No
Up till what focal range do you get 2.8? Thanks!
34mm approx
