I got this lens as part of the D500 kit. I also watched Ken's video. My issue with Ken's argument is that he didn't speak to the quality of images taken with the 16-80MM. Ok, so the body is made with plastic and it uses plastic mechanical parts; no argument there. But, what about the glass elements? You know, the thing that allows photography to take place. It's the first (and only) DX lens with Nano-crystal coating (yeah I know, Ken's all like "you can't tell the difference between photos taken with nano coating!" That's right...unless you take pictures of direct sun light, then you CAN tell.) I consider that Nikon gave the lens its coveted "gold ring" denoting that it is a pro-level lens. I hardly think Nikon would call an inferior lens a pro-level lens and I certainly don't think Nikon would bundle a crappy lens along side their flagship DX camera. Now, I also have the 17-55MM Nikkor he compared this lens to. It's a good lens, but what he doesn't mention is that this lens was designed to focus it's details onto a 7 megapixel sensor, which was what was available back when it was made (wow, the use of 'was' three times!). The 16-80MM is designed to project details onto a 21 megapixel and above sensor. I really wish Ken would provide or discuss quality of image between these lenses, but I finally understand why he does not. Ken has amassed a lot of technical knowledge about digital cameras and lenses, but unfortunately, none of that has translated to skill in taking photos. If you want to see what sort of photographic skills Ken has, look at some of his examples using an insanely expensive setup: www.jasonlanier.com/blog/2017/6/12/the-shoot-between-jason-lanier-and-ken-wheeler-the-angry-photographer-using-the-sony-a9-and-the-fuji-gfx
I also got this lens bundled with my d500 and I was happy to pay the extra money for it. No matter what can be said about modern plastics used in lens construction, you are right that its about the quality of images that come out of it first and foremost. There's a lot to be said for longevity, but that is second in my mind. The lens construction is just like all modern lenses. I remember when the D series lenses were first coming out and people said the same about them because their frame of reference was in AI/s lenses. Apparently the autofocus systems benefit from lighter bodies and mechanisms in the lens or else they certainly would have tried building lenses with the heavy duty construction of the vintage lenses. Somebody would have tried it. I have all three types of lenses in my kit and use them all, but I've not really had problems with any of them. I take pretty good care of my stuff and very rarely mess anything up.. Many of my modern style G lenses have lasted ten years by now and no worse for wear. I like some of the older non-coated lenses, but also quite like the newer fancy coated stuff as well depending on the shot and the mood I'm looking for, I choose my lens appropriately. I may not be one of the better photographers out there, but the images I've got from this lens have been some of the best in my portfolio. In fact, I just took it on a solo motorcycle ride around Peru last week and it took many types of images quite well. I think when you start splitting hairs, you start to lose sight of the important parts of photography. Getting out there and shooting and making it happen... I'm not an overly technical person and use photography as a creative outlet and so I definitely don't want to hamper it with technical mumbo jumbo. Does the lens work very very well for what I need it to do? Absolutely yes! Is it the best lens of its type available on the market? I don't know and may care more if I had a ton of money, but I'd prefer to spend that money out shooting... Its a pretty damn good lens in my opinion!!
@@BrettBodkinsPhotography Quite agree. It's all about the photography. Lately, I am enjoying the Sigma 18-35mm I got used. A very sharp lens and very fast.
That looks like a pretty cool lens, but since I have a 35mm film camera and an FX camera I'm not buying any DX lenses right now. Wanting to get a faster wide angle for full frame and considering a bunch of them. Hoping to do more nighttime stuff in the future... Seriously considering a 20mm 1.8g lens next!

Thanks for the kind comment Robert!! I do really like this lens even now... I'm currently split between a Z6ii and D810 and have a few lenses for each... I have a kit lens only for the Z6ii and I still miss my D500 and this lens sometimes... I think it was one of my favorite setups thus far... Need to finish consolidating my setup, but have been busy the last year with a move back to the US and haven't been able to get back fully into photography yet... Hopefully soon... I'm gonna guess you're still using one of the 18-55mm lenses and I had two different versions of that over the years and this 16-80 is much better and much more versatile for sure... If you can get one under about $500, then I'd say its a great option!!
Thank you very much and hope the video helped!! This is a fantastic everyday lens!! If you're currently using one of the 18-55 lenses, then I think you will be very pleased!! Hope you get one soon!!! Thanks for watching!!
Thanks Lars, glad it could be of some help... I really loved that lens/camera combo, but recently traded it for a smaller full frame in the Z6ii with equivalent lens... Hope that I will end up loving that setup as much or more! Thanks for watching!
Awesome Brian. Thank you very much! This lens represents my bread and butter.. Maybe one day when I get a better quality telephoto lens that will change a bit, but for now this is my main weapon of choice... I have ultrawide that I will change to, but only when I need wider than the 18mm this lens provides... I have primes that I use from time to time or for other types of photography, but this is the type of photography that I love to do most and what I'm most known for... This lens pretty much lives on my camera unless I come across a situation that requires a "more speciality lens"... I have done alot of other review videos for lenses that are not as much in my wheelhouse and the image examples I use definitely show that! LOL! Take care bud and thanks for watching!! Appreciate the compliment.
George Smith Thanks George! Most of these would have been the d500, but I got similar results with the d7000 and d40 before that! I feel like image quality on Nikons are pretty much about the same model to model, with slight differences in high ISO performance. Since most of my work is done at base ISO it just doesn’t affect me that much!! I will say that this lens is my main lens and I only change it out when I need a different focal length or a faster aperture! I love it! It replaced one of the 18-55mm lenses and I like this one much better. I would suggest buying it used or as part of a kit to get a better deal! Wouldn’t mind paying $500 for it but wouldn’t want to pay $1000! Take care!

I love my d500 and it’s one of the best all around cameras on the market. I have a video about the d500 as well. There are certain types of shooting where a d500 is overkill or where a full frame camera may be preferable. It also depends on what lenses you already have and your financial position. I can highly recommend this lens/camera combo! The only problem is that the size/weight is pretty much the same as a full frame combo, and certain shooters should probably lean d7200 instead for megapixel/financial reasons! Definitely try to pay less than $500-600 and you should be golden! I hope that my thoughts were clear enough on this, if not feel free to ask!
