Nikon doesn't focus opposite of everyone else; everyone else focuses opposite of Nikon. Nikon was first, the oldest.

I have had a Nikon D7100 for several years. I got it for one reason, the crop factor. I normally work in full frame, but it is nice to have the crop factor turn my 600mm f/4 ED IF AIS Nikkor into a 900mm f/4 ED IF AIS Nikkor. Although I have little gripes with the D7100, with the exception of its very small buffer capacity, I got a D500 about 4 months ago and I hate to say it, the D7100 is collecting dust in one of my 4 camera bags. The D500 gets almost as much use as my D850 now.

      @paganphil100 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Scott Murphy: Yes, I think the D500 is the best "semi-pro" camera available at the present time......its basically a mini-D5 without the price-tag of it's "Big Brother".

Great video I always look forward to the reviews from TCS. If I may give feedback on one point. The price at $1999 is not expensive at all when compared to my older D300 purchased in 2007 for $1799. Also in order to get the D300 to shoot just 8 fps you had to buy a battery grip for $350 a battery from the D3 $150 and a special door $60. That's over $2300 9 years ago. Convert that to today's money and your closer to $3000. Every reviewer complains about the price? Honestly I think there are many D300 and D300s users that would consider the price a non issue. Availability now that's an issue. I was able to find a camera store where I live in Hawaii that had 1. So I purchased it. BTW that's actually 2 things that are now rare in Hawaii. A camera store and a D500

Fantastic and thorough review. I absolutely LOVE my 300mm f/4 PF VR, I'm surprised it's not more popular. One of my favorite telephoto lenses; it's sharp and incredibly small and great for handling. This thing makes images just as sharp as the 300mm f/2.8 VRII, awesome little lens for outdoor sports and wildlife!

SLR are old technology. cos before that camera were range finder. where you see at one hole and take picture from another hole. So you got parallax error. To correct that SLR was born. Now the new system is mirrorless. where you can completely eliminate mirror slap vibration. If you stuck with SLR lenses than you are sure to buy another SLR camera.

Why do D750 and D500 cost the same? Here is why...I’m not choosing one camera over another but I would like to explain why you may want the D500 over the D750:
    1. The D500 is built little better. (More magnesium and weather sealing, [not positive about WS])-Very important to me. Built more like a pro camera.
    2. Some people say the ISO and dynamic rang are better on the D500. If not it is so close it’s not even worth comparing.
    3. D500 has much larger buffer
    4. D500 10 fps D750 6.5 fps
    5. D500 better auto focus system, same as D5 D500 = 25. 72, 153 D750 = 9, 21, 51
    6. D500 supports radio signal flash trigger system (another very big advantage)
7.D500 has faster shutter speed *1/8000* v/s D750 *1/4000* (this is very big advantage also)
    8. D500 SD + XQD compatible
    9. D500 has pro button layout. Some people say “so what?” but I had the D300 and once you get used to it, it is really nice. Those people probably aren’t pros.
    10. D500 is only DSLR that shoots 4K
    11. D500 has higher resolution monitor - twice as good
    12. D500 More battery options EN-EL 18 or 15
    13. D500 has more movie playback options
    14. D500 viewfinder is 1.0x v/s D750 .7x
    15. D500 has touch screen
    16. 4mp difference is no difference
    17. Sigma makes 18-35 1.8, 50-100 1.8, to get full frame like bokeh on D500
    18. D500 has bluetooth *and* WiFi
Feel free to add to this list, I can’t think of anything else. To me the D500 should probably cast more. Don’t tell Nikon though!

D500 has longer reach as a crop sensor. Perfect for sports and birding. AF points cover nearly entire screen.

    • @iSOBigD
      @iSOBigD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Russell Stubbs Lots of good reasons to buy it if you were looking to upgrade now and they cost the same. However, in Canada the D500 is nearly 3k while I got a new D750 for $2000 months ago. Unfortunately they're not at all in the same price range, but another advantage for the D500 is most lenses cost a lot less than their FF equivalent.

    • @cavebeastdemon3631
      @cavebeastdemon3631 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

iSOBigD - Sorry to hear that. If the D500 where 3 grand I would buy the D750 too or if I had 3000 I would buy the D810.

Love your reviews! However, as a D5 owner I can tell you that the AF Auto Fine Tune is wildly inconsistent and should really just be used as a general guide when you do more in depth calibration later. On a tripod, same target, broad daylight, I was getting ranges from -3 to +20. It was better with primes, but with zooms (even at the same focal length) it's practically useless.

Nice review, but seems a bit rushed and incomplete.. Hope for a nice follow-up with more information and tests worthy of a high priced flagship camera. Maybe others can reply and add comment on what they like to see in the follow-up? for me I would like to see 1) comparisons at ISO 12800 with D810 and D750,D7200,7DM2,A6300 2) 200-500, 300PF wildlife sport, 3) 50-100, Portrait 4) Lowlight Machine gun mode :-) 5) ISO100 vs D7200,D810,D5,D4S, 6)"SlapBitch" :-) 7) usage with 16-80 vs 18-140 8) others ?

nikon is pushing 16-80 zoom kit with D500, but at $1100 US, it seems like a very expensive glorified kit lens, i can't find any of the elite D500 reviews addressing this zoom kit, fyi i had a horrible experience with 18-140 kit zoom with D7000, D7000 has served me well but 18-140 imo absolutely horrible lens

Both Nikon and Canon do not take their APS-C bodies seriously. That´s why they do not provide high end lenses for the format. The D 500 is a niche product for dedicated wildlife and sports shooters who desperately want the crop factor to enlarge their focal length.

Always wanted a nikon D500 eversince I got into photography with my dad's D80 and a W100 (but i sold this since I couldn't tinker the way I wanted). I hadn't thought about cameras in quite some time cause I would have to save my allowance money for too long, which I would have probably started working at that point, so I just forgot about it at some point.
Recently I got the opportunity to recieve a reward from my college (which was quite the surprise for me) and I've been looking into cameras again.
First I took a look at Sony RX100 3 4, 5 or 5A, because I thought the portability would be much better for me. But one of the things I liked about taking photos was the bokeh, so I took a look at the Sony a6000 then Fuji XT30, XT3, then I suddenly remembered the D500, it's a little cheaper than the XT3 (which makes sense since it is older).
So this would be the pinnacle of APS-C DSLR, buut, then I remembered I wanted to do Video aswell, so maybe if I got more money then I'd probably get this sometime else.

Great review Chris. Thanks for the image samples too. The low light performance is really impressive as is the sharpness. Already have a 750 which I really like and a 7100 but will be purchasing another Nikon soon. Not sure if there is a new 810 update which will have similar performance with a larger FF sensor. Regardless, for 2 grand US, it's a hell of a camera and using FF lenses works just fine. I saw some images shot with a Nikon 20 1.8 and they were amazing. Thanks again for the review.

The AF-fine tune function is a small step in the right direction but it's still sloppy by Nikon. What about varying subject distances? That changes the optimal value for fine tune. It should be able to store a close, mid and far value for primes which believe me will be different, and for zooms settings for each focal length. With the computer power on these camera's these days and software ability anything less is just lazy. One value for each lens? This is 2016, time to step it up Nikon...

The gap between your gear reviews and the others available on TH-cam just keeps getting wider.
This is a great body for stills and the micro adjust feature is pretty genius. The video from it is pretty lackluster and the VR feature is just terrible.

      +terry breedlove
      No,
There is no point here either.
The camera is fast enough to handle those 20mp files.
And the focus points are already spread out till the edges.
The D7100/7200 had a crop mode to boost the framerate increase buffer and get better AF point coverage. While still having enough pixels to work with.
The D500 doesn't need that compromise.

Okay I just watched this again and you did mention its one of the best focus systems on the market. So I was wrong about the previous comment. I will say one thing however... don.t spend $2000 on a pro body like this one that is fully weather sealed and built like a tank then leave off the hot shoe cover that comes with the camera. Water will enter straight into that electronic interface. Leave the hot shoe cover on when ever you do not have something else mounted on it. You completely defeat the weather sealing carrying your camera with the hot shoe exposed like it is in this video.

Nikon basically did what a lot people wanted Panasonic to do.
Put a 20+MP APS-C - how about naming it Super4/3 for a Super35-sized sensor? - and using a 2x crop for normal Micro4/3 lenses but starting a new line up for APS-C sensor "Super4/3" cameras. If the LS300 has proven the Micro4/3 mount can take APS-C lenses and a Super 35 sensor, it could be a next step - like Sony did, started with APS-C and moved up to FF, except Micro4/3 has plenty of lenses.
Sure, Panasonic doesn't seem to have balls to do that, heck, they don't seem to be even considering lowering the MP count to build upon GH4's biggest knock - noise and low light. But they could at least do it for a FS5 competitor, a Panasonic version of the LS300, Panasonic can't deny that it does make sense if it's for video.
Although I don't get why can't Panasonic use the GH like Sony does with the A7s and use the GX like they do with the A7r. Panasonic already stepped up the GX line up with weather sealing and a bigger body, this way the GH doesn't need to fill photography needs of more MP, most people buy the GH for video anyway. That way, GX=higher MP count and GH=just enough for 4K without extra crop, maybe even 4K for 1.86x crop of the GH1/2.
I know Panasonic doesn't have the same firepower as Sony and using, developing or buying different sensors means extra cost when compared to a single sensor for the whole line up basically, but if you are not bold enough in situations like that how do you expect to fight back. GH5 rumors about more MP rather than less makes me wonder if the GH5 will have at least 1 stop improvement in low light and OVERALL less noise.

WOW. Finally, an ISO for ISO comparison between the D500 and D750. I shoot low light action mainly roller derby and I'm consistently hang around 4000-6400 ISO. The D500 is amazing and keeps increasing the distance between Nikon and Canon bodies. As a D750 owner I'm happy the FF edges out the D500 in low light image quality. Not to take anything away from the D500 because that means it's most likely better than D810, 5DM3 etc..... Talking low light here. As with one of your other comments previously... The new technology really opens the door for what we can expect for a D810 and D750 successor....
Thank you TCS your reviews are awesome.

No fast recall modes for different camera setting; the D500 still
uses Nikon's awful settings banks that take too long to select and don't
recall all we need, like AF settings, anyway. The D7200, D610 and D750 are much better here.
    ● No built-in flash.
    ● No GPS.
    ● No auto brightness control for the LCD.
    ● No lock on power switch; easy to knock on or off by accident and miss shots.
    ● Only 20.5 MP (5,568 x 3,712 pixels native); even a D3200 has slightly higher resolution.
    ● Still no sane replacement of Nikon's idiotic Custom Settings
    Banks.

For some reason no-one has reviewed the lens yet....go figure!

just wondering, on nikon d500 body would you consider the nikon 24-120 f4G ED VR or the nikon 17-55 f2.8G IF ED ? Are those mm on wide and telephoto good to have ? Maybe is better to consider a smaller focal range and buy a 2nd lens ? What can you recommend ?

Guys, I'm in the market for a new camera now and my shortlist is the D500 and the Fuji X-T2. I shoot studio portraits, landscapes and sports. Which camera would you recommend,? Seeing as both are now about 18 months old, is there another option I should be looking at? Alternatively, should I wait and see what the Canon 7dmk3 or Nikon D760 will be like when they reportedly arrive in the first half of 2018?

Talking about how close the sensor is, with regard to low light performance, on this APS-C sensor camera vs the D750 it's probably also worth mentioning that for the cost of just a D500 you can almost buy a D750 with it's 24-120 F4 kit lens ....

The Nikon D7200 is the little brother to the Nikon D500 and is a wonderful camera. Of course the D500 is Nikon APS-C flagship camera now and from this video here and others like it, there is not much difference in the low-light photography area when it comes to a high-performance APS-C camera like the D500 and a full-frame camera. At the end of the day, it just boils down to what type of photography that you want to do.
