    I'm late to the party but I think Darius' character arc was about him always escaping his past but constantly being confronted by it throughout the series:
    1. Episode 1 he experiences "deja vu" i.e. he is reliving similar events from his unknown past.
    2. London and Cree Summers are hints to what this past could have been. With London she represents what was, which is them potentially having been in a very toxic relationship and both of them being terrible people through it all. With Cree Summers she represents what could be and says in her dialogue with Darius that she wants to be "part of this world" (maybe because Darius has always been in his own world for the whole series).
    3. In Europe when Darius tries out food at the Nigerian joint it was a reference to him and his family. By losing the Nigerian joint to gentrification it represented the loss of his family who are no more.
    4. In the Teddy Perkins episode we're confronted by two brothers who have a falling out which could represent Darius and his brother's troubled relationship together which is the reason why their relationship in the last episode seemed so awkward.
    5. Darius gets no answer from his brother when he asks about his parents because they're both in Heaven. His brother telling him to be with his people is him telling Darius to not be held hostage by the past he needs to be present with the friends and loved ones he has in the right now in the present.
    6. Darius finds out at the end of the episode that he isn't dreaming anymore because Judge Judy isn't thick anymore. He tried one last time to convince himself that his friends aren't real and are temporary visages in his life kinda like London, but he's proven wrong and his glad to realise that his friends, his support system are real and they actually care about him.
    Darius' story arc is basically the show's story arc...which escapism. All the main cast members have tried to escape, Earn through his job, Al away from the world of fame, Vanessa through adopting personas that go against who she really is, and Darius in general. That's why the show has random surreal moments like Black Justin Bieber, the invisible car, Mexican Drake etc. In the midst of tackling real world issues people deal with. It's quite meta

    Now it makes sense as to why Darius clung so tight to Earn and Al. His brother, mom and dad passed 😔. That's what I thought it symbolized when his brother told him to go out there, don't stay in here. And Darius asked how the parents were which made me think that the brother and parents are in the same place and when he said, "I miss you". That was sooo final. Poor Darius.

    Most times in our dreams we are great or heralded, the protagonist. When Earn was asked in therapy who he trusts, Earn only mentioned Darius. That could be another element that adds to Darius being bigged up in his own dream. Who knows?

      The photo of Darius with his brother, and I mean from the position they in, the clothes the black and white AND the dam people look just like em - anyway it looks exactly like a pic of Zev Love X and DJ SUBROC from KMD.

    Did they all at some point experience sensory deprivation? In the very first episode of the season Van and Earn were trapped in a mall. They went through a door that was wet and carpeted. Throughout the entire season I kept asking myself what is the purpose of all these trap doors and Darius' episode answered the question without really answering the question lol. I'm wondering if Cree Summer was Darius' mom getting medicine for her "baby" aka Darius' brother. She seemed to have some mental health issue and stopped taking meds (she mentioned some heavy stuff that treats more than anxiety), which could have led to her passing due to her own doing, based on what she said. The brother is clearly gone, which makes me wonder if every main character in Atlanta is dead.
    In the first episode Darius remembered seeing that dog, because he was reliving a memory in the tank. Earn wakes up after the cold open wearin headphones and said he had a weird dreams about hands pulling him down...Paperboi literally "bought the farm" The question becomes when did everyone die? Was their whole journey never realized and Earn and Al died in the parking lot? The rest of the show is Darius imagining them making it big. That's why every episode has a surreal moment.

    • @memyselfi9576
      @memyselfi9576 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah fam that’s just intellectually lazy. The they were all dead the whole time trope has been done to death and would actually make the show worse in retrospect.

    • @BDraftProductions
      @BDraftProductions ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@memyselfi9576 "it was all a dream" was also done several times before (Roseanne, Newhart, St. Elsewhere), The trope of the ambiguous ending was done before too - Sopranos and Inception...just because Atlanta had it's own spin on it, doesn't mean it's lazy or bad writing. Though I think it having multiple "correct" interpretations gives this show the edge over all the other times the tropes have been used.

      There is absolutely 0 reason to believe that they were all killed in the pilot. They pulled guns on the guy who kicked the mirror but at no point in that interaction did the stranger have the upper hand.

    • @BDraftProductions
      @BDraftProductions ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@dashfriday974 He said his people were "right over there" That could have been a diversion, but they were walking back and forth from that spot off camera. He also had a gun too, as did Earn. Darius saw the same dog that Earn saw when he had his headphones on while riding the bus. There was another episode with Earn laying on the couch - again wearing headphones - staring down the barrel of a gun...
      They never explained how Darius was the only one who didn't go to jail like Earn and Paperboi, unless he ran from the cops like the other guy did..but then he went down to the police station to bail out Paperboi. Why wasn't Darius locked up, but the other two were? - Because maybe no one really got locked up and something else happened.
      Also Cree Summer played Freddy on A Different World....implying he's living in a different world.. and Freddy Kruger in the movies made dreams seem lifelike to the dreamer to the point they could never escape...the death parallel is there too....I think that what Cree Summer's presence was alluding to (in addition with her potentially being his mother, both figuratively by being a weird Black character on a show that predated Atlanta and literally in terms of the character in this episode)

    It was all a dream, just this day. Darius was in the tank from the beginning of the episode. He was in the tank thinking about what happened before he left for his appointment. As he left the house he went deeper into his thoughts. He was hungry and wanted Popeyes. He was hurt that Al went to the farm without him and he wanted to make fun of him. Darius sleep with Van last season. He was thinking about these things and in his dreams he had Ern make fun of Al and Al tell Ern the he sleep with his 304. At the pharmacy, they did not his prescription and he told them to look in the back. In the back of his mind. He was there to pickup meds for his brother. Cree Summer was a mixture of several people in Darius' life. Cree from a different world, a lady he has seen in the tea room at the center and His mother. He spoke to her as the lady from the center first. He spoke to her as his mother, his mother used to pickup meds for his brother and his dad thought mom was crazy because mom supported her son even though he was gay. His brother died of aids like Easy E. He spoke to her as Cree last, he always felt she had a beautiful spirit.

    I disagree w/ you just a lil bout London. I think London was a friend from the past yes from wild days but a friend who has died and he has some sort of guilt from her death. That’s why in the end she says “it’s all your fault” then the camera cuts to him suddenly holding the gun & he jumps. He wishes he could have did things differently what ever occurred. I saw the sadness/hurt/shock when he first saw her and was reluctant to “go back there for that ride”. Just like his brother is dead and his parents. Like him bringing his brother meds and visiting, things he wanted to do for his sick brother but maybe didn’t; thus explains his brothers reaction initially. Him asking about his parents also gave us insight into maybe he didn’t see his parents as much (when they were alive) like his brother did. Anyways just my take. Yes with all the funny moments got us cracking up yet in still All of it is really heartbreaking when you think about it.

    As much as I loved Darius's weirdness I think we have to let believe Earn in the last scene, that them congregating in the Al's living room is real. Sure, anytime Darius was in the tank he was dreaming but not at the very end. He was grinning while watching Judge Judy on the couch because she wasn't thicc, validating that Earn was right and he was really there with his friends and surrogate family.

    This episode was interesting even though this was a series finale I didn't feel the finality that one would normally feel in these types of episodes. I guess I was expecting to see the Will in an empty house moment like the Fresh Prince finale or Martin writing 1 Luv on his wall on the Martin finale. One thing we learned about the series Atlanta is that it's not conventional lol. This episode focused primarily on Darius as he was going through self-deprivation. While he was under self-deprivation he saw a woman he lost touch with who turned out to be a maniac lol. Then he saw his Brother who hasn't seen him in years which made him feel guilty about not seeing his family in such a long time. After leaving the chamber he's placed in a room full of older women his mind really starts to play tricks on him when the women erupt in laughter which causes him to spazz out on one of the women lol. This in turn gets him kicked out of the facility. As the episode goes his perception of reality gets worst as he steals a car from Valet & saves Al, Earn, and Van as they were being held hostage by the Sushi store owner lol. Then the episode ends where it began at Earns House this time with Van and Popeyes lol. The series ended where the series began with Darius being surrounded around the only people who have consistently been in his life. I guess Donald was trying to show us that the characters were going to live on beyond the series.

    At his brother's apartment. Darius was not aloud to be close to or touch his brother in his late stages of aids. He asked if he could hug his brother and his brother said yes I can't get any sicker. Darius was hungry and wanted some Jollof, but he didn't want to be full for the meet up. His brother said that he did not want Darius in there, he wanted him outside, having fun. When Darius looked at the photos his brother disappeared. When Darius looked at the picture of he and his brother, he asked about their parents, he got too emotional and used thick Judge Judy to come out of that dream. He was in deep and had only came out of that level of his dream. Darius came out of his sadness and was back in Al's house. Ern tells Darius that they are friends, Darius' guilt for smashing Van. All of the things she does, darius used to do. He got uncomfortable when the cops was drilling London and tried to break his dream by thinking about homeboys from outer space. He dated London around the mid 2000's because he tried to break his dream again by thinking about a Chappelle Show skit, where day and his friends are high and hits a little girl. London runs away from Darius because he abused her, that's why she said it's all is fault. *LONG THEORY BELOW*
    I believe Atlanta (the city in this series) is an allegory for purgatory and this show as a whole is Darius’s simulated purgatory and, as the audience, we follow his perceived remembrance of his real life and the lives of his best friends/family before he went into his own purgatory (whether that be he’s in the tank, he’s sleep, he’s dead, or neither is up for interpretation still).
    Revisit season 1 episode 1, the scene with Earn on the bus talking to Ahmad White. Earn: “Are there people on earth that are just here to make it easier for the winners?” Ahmad: “Actual victory belongs to things that simply do not see failure. Let the path push you like a broken branch in a river's current” is this not the same philosophy we’ve seen Darius follow the entire show? Especially the final scene of that finale, the face Darius makes isn’t one of relief or fear, it’s acceptance. Whether real or fake, he perceives that moment no different and sees neither option as a bad thing. This makes him the victor and the broken branch
    BUT thru the whole show we’re seeing the POV trials and tribulations of characters (Earn, Al, Van) whose entire existences in essence are to provide comfort or joyful experiences for Darius (the winner in this situation) in his own earth/purgatory simulation. Shidd in the first scene of the first episode Darius had Deja Vu of Ahmad White’s dog and this the same Ahmad White you only know from your dreams lol (iykyk).
    Rewatching the series is great for connecting certain dots to the finale (or completely reaching which is still fun too lmaooo)

    That's DOOM and his brother Dingilizwe who passed away back in the day. Except it appears Darius' younger self is Subroc who died 1st. His younger brother look like DOOM did in the photo.

    Darius is dead and the entire series is him reliving his life before he dies...The only information that Darius has is from what the crew tells him and his own interpretation of how he sees them individually, given the information... So here's an example... Therapy session Earn probably talked to Darius about everything that was dropped in therapy...Which is why earn makes it a point to say the only person that he trusts is Darius... Because that's how Darius feels earn confided in him and that is special to him... And so his mind is kind of filling in the blanks... So why do I think he's dead? This gives us the cause and establishes that he does this regularly... So what we saw is the last thing he remembers when he died... He saw the commercial which is where the story is based...he woke up twice face down in the tank...The first time the guy turning over has never happened... And then he's been sleeping for 30 minoots that's when he wakes up again face down and screams... The sirens that you hear at the end could be the police or could be an ambulance... So when Darius busts in to save the crew that's him sort of crossing over making up how his story would end with him saving the crew and giving everyone Popeyes.

    I don't think we should take the scene of Darius visiting his brother too literally because the vibe I'm getting is that it represents feelings of grief. Like when Darius says "I'll stay if you want me to" and his brother says, "I don't want you in here, I want you out there" I don't think it means his literal family doesn't want him around. It feels like his brother is dead and he's feeing survivor's guilt.
    Maybe it's his subconscious, or maybe It's the spirit of his brother. Either way, the message is, "Your brother would want you to be happy. You don't need to wallow in sadness on his account, please don't deny yourself fun and friendship."
    Perhaps his brother didn't expect to see him because he's so frequently self-medicated and rarely just feels his grief. And I think he's sad when he sees Thicc Judge Judy because that's when he realizes he isn't really there, that he isn't going to have jollof with his brother again.
    That scene with the album was heartbreaking. His brother just leaves the frame and Darius is alone in an empty house talking to himself and it makes me wanna cry. Lakeith is wonderful.

    I think it was half and half or a mixture. All of the moments were real with some moments Darius reimagining them in his dream state, like in the first episode, opening scene when he says this is deja vu. Also, I think the creators give us a hint to the ending not being all a dream or not still a dream is that at the end you can hear subtle police sirens in the background, meaning it was real and now the police is coming to put him in jail. Also Darius reaction was different to when we saw him see thick judy. The ending smile could have meant a smile of relief now that he knows he is in a reality where he has his friends who are like family to him and it's all good and It's not a dream.
