- I don't get why people like the G tanks, they are like fancy jeep wranglers which are some of the worst driving on road vehicles you can buy. Regardless at some point demand changed from the Range Rovers being the sought after SUV's to the G Series. Anyone want to rent it?

If you really want a capable/economical offroad vehicle you get a Jeep Wrangler or a Toyota 4Runner. You're still better off with a 4x4 truck 1/2 ton to 1 ton than a G Wagon. Gwagon is all Status. "Look how much money I can piss away."

as a mercedes employee we get sent to alabama for training and drive the newer g-wagons off road and they are absolutely incredible the newer ones are far better than the older models. really wish more people used them off road

@@oKima81 vast majority of people do not maintain these cars well. Are these parts meant to last 80-100k miles no. There are some parts that are plastic and cheaply made. Chances of you going thru something hugely wrong if you are the sole owner the whole time from brand new to 70-80k miles is small

G wagon sells 95% due to its exterior design. I mean my wife absolutely doesn’t care about any cars, but she likes g wagon. Its got a cool factor.

The G63 is pointless. It's an offroader that is too expensive to take it offroading. It's just to cart your spoiled kids around town.
I will say, the high performance G wagons aren't for me, but I'd totally go for one powered by a turbo 4 cylinder diesel engine, on portal axles (4x4 squared), with a lineX finish on the body.
All the luxury on the inside, and sensible rugedness on the outside.
Of course I wouldn't pay more than 55 to 65k for that, so that'll never happen. 🤣

I own a G63 463 edition and I understand when you talk about the comfort side of the G Class but I got it for the same reason. For some reason I love its harsh rides and the way it pushes you from the back when you gas it.
2019 is where it's at. Get one of those.

Actually they use them as work tools. There are quite more stripped down diesel versions of those. Like unimogs, they were designed to work, and work is what many do in Europe. From offroad machines to tow pigs. Just because in the US the 500/63 variant is major money and only used for status, doesnt mean everywhere else is

Rob, I totally agree with the way they drive. Nothing exciting. My F-150 was in the shop and my friend loaned me his 2016 G63 while he was traveling. What I did notice is how differently people look at you. Much differently than if you drive a Range Rover.

Being a valet at Fashion island here in Newport, Robs right they used to not be great (I driven quite a few lol) but then the 2019s came out and they do handle a lot better with your upgrade packages looking meaner and sounding a whole lot better , the new 2020s are good too with the full dash screen instead of gauges.

@@erikb8877 I promise you that you would be unbelievably impressed. I work for Mercedes Benz and have taken these off road. I have driven the 2018 and the 2019 on the same off road track and I can assure you there is no compromise in the off road capability.

I have been a part of the off-road community for a very long time and I can’t say I have ever seen any rigs with air or hydraulic suspension save for a couple of solid axle Jeeps with the AirRock system. They work pretty good off-road for a street rig but more of a novelty.
The best off-roaders in MY opinion are the rigs that compete in King Of The Hammers every year in Johnson Valley CA. Go ahead, look it up, I will wait. Yup, I will take solid axles, coilovers, and bypass shocks for anything but high speed desert racing.

I just picked up a rare 2 door version G wagon. I love it, unique like nothing else out there. And I'm offloading that thing
I beg to differ, and Ive driven one. 3:56 is an example, the door closes like you're closing a gold vault. Plus Driving you sit up higher and have better visibility than any other car. You also feel, while driving, that you can drive through anything.
It’s one of my favorite cars tbh, i can understand it’s pretty bad at handling but then again it’s a cool looking car and i think if you like it and you can get it why not? And the new gen of G’s are great! + They hold their value veryy well! ;)

I use to have the RR evoque coupe which has the dynamic suspension. It was a turbo 4 banger, AWD and that thing handled AMAZING. Looked way better than normal Evoque too. Only seen one other one, guess people don’t like not having 2 door SUV. I took it off road with low pro street tires and it creeped through the mud no problem. Was blown away. Pretty easy to work on too granted all I had to do was oil changes.
i recently looked at an 04 for offroading, just out of curiousity. the mid-00s wagons look super similar to the new ones for 1/4th price.
of course the dealer only took all cash offers though, plugs only
I've driven both (2015 g550 & 2015 Range Rover Sport) and I agree with everything Rob was saying about the g wagons. Range Rovers are much better cars for daily use but the g wagon definitely is a more unique vehicle
Been driving a 2017 G63 every day for 3 months now and it’s nowhere near as bad as he makes it seem. Rough handling/floating on certain roads around 40 mph under hard acceleration and a common shakiness around 55 mph when you’re just cruising. Beyond that it’s been extremely easy and fun to live with
Because it’s a true off-road beast with design criteria that places durability and capability above driving dynamics. That’s what makes the G-Wagen legit and iconic.
You can’t hold the typical buyers usage profile against the truck - which is what the guy in the video and a lot of the people in the comments are doing
G-Wagens predate Kardashian fame by decades
This is in reference to an old video but i can't imagine building a home and "owning" property in a place where i am told i am unable to film youtube in my own house. Move to the country Rob, being able to do what you want when you want is priceless. I could never go back to a city.
Consider a Cayenne turbo with air suspension. I have a 2016 diesel and LOVE it! With the air suspension, it goes from a freeway cruiser to the best handling SUV you can buy making it a blast to drive. The fit and finish is superb, much better than the X5 I use to drive. The interior is very classy with ultra comfortable, body holding seats. Anyway, give it a thought.
Oh yeah even off road , I’m talking about the first gen cayennes they are really good off road for a sports suv 🚙 even had a locking diff
So what I get from this video is. It looks badass, sounds badass, super high quality, very nice, and capable off road. But he doesnt get why people like it. He pretty much answers his own question throughout the whole video....
Ranger Rover is on the top list for the last 20 years for the less reliable car just saying.

121bham I own a Series II and a 93’ D90. My Series II is original. My ‘93 is a 5spd 200tdi that shifts smoothly. With any car, they’re only as good as you’re good to them. Can say the same for my Disco4(shown in my YT pic). 8 years of ownership- AC blower replacement, two O2 sensors, lower control arms, tires, a few light bulbs.. knock on wood, but she’s been good to me. Refer to my IG for the other two turds.

Nicest truck I’ve ever owned. Loved my Range Rover...at first. Until I started having major reliability issues. It once shut down while I was driving 65 mph on the NYS thruway....that was a fun time. Especially with my wife and 2 small children with me. Never again. Traded it in (got hammered) and never looked back. If you must scratch your Range Rover itch, lease a new one for no more than 2 years. And lease a Nissan or a Honda at the same time so you have a truck to use while your Range Rover is in the shop.

Thanks for the info. The average person would not know this. I seen a tv show (car show) and it was based in the UK. Not Top Gear. The episode was, what's the best all around vehicle for city and county driving, in the UK specifically. One of the host said, the G wagon. The other guy laughed while he made his case. I always thought about that and its refreshing to hear the truth from someone who has one. I agree that people see celebrities and professional athletes drive them and assume they are great vehicles.

The monthly payment on my 2007 G55 AMG is 650$. I customized and updated the exterior to match the 2018 G Wagons. I can't justify why anyone would pay 650$ a day for a rental where it costs that much to own one.

I work in these things the dash and door panels are put together with sheet metal screws that you can find at Home depot.. No lie the older ones.. The tail lights harness is like a 5th grader just learning about wires and how to put wire and pig tail together...

The G-Class is a great towing vehicle and with a good set of tires you can get a trailer out of everything with low range and 3 locking differential. Also it is smaller in size than a Range Rover and the visibility is also better due to the boxy shape, so it is easier to manouver in thight spots. THE AMG variants are nice to look at and sound good, but the Sidepipes eat ground clearance. In europe the 350d is way more common, due to higher mileage and less tax to pay. Hope they build a "professional" version of the new model soon.

I absolutely love the driving dynamics of mine, but they're not for everyone. I miss the body-on-frame dynamics of older cars. I also dislike air suspension and auto-leveling suspensions in general.

Definitely an image thing. I think they are impressive for 2 reasons; the doors are old school Mercedes, vault like. And the driving position is superb in terms of visibility.
Underrated comment
These old G wagons had live axles front and rear, skidplates and lockers, exactly like a jeep Rubicon wrangler, that means on road its a bad ride quality, but offroad it totally leaves modern 4x4's behind. Just change the wheel/tyre combo and your good to explore the dirt. Next up they are popular with VIP transport because they are available armored cheaply, flat panels and a chassis that doesn't need extra stiffening alongside enough power from factory to not be a slug when it weighs over 4 tons. Its so important in those roles that this old series is sold alongside its new replacement, just like the 70 series landcrusier.

He bought it because it was the most expensive Mercedes that could fit more than two people money could buy at the time. These cars (ESPECIALLY the AMG versions) are bought exclusively as status symbols.

I own a 2003 G500. Now in 2020 it’s still worth somewhere between $30-40k. A 2003 Range Rover is under 10k. Plus a G won’t leave you stranded. And the G looks like nothing else.
The reason people like them is cus it’s a luxury suv that doesn’t look like a suv.

The difference between the G and Range Rover is you know everytime you turn that key in the G it starts and runs like a Swiss watch . The Rover is a bit of Russian roulette once it’s outside warranty , the reliability is woeful . Here in the UK they have a terrible reputation for reliability . The G will still be going at 1/2 million miles whereas the rangey will be scrap at around 150k . The G is also much better off road (3 axle locks for a start) and much more durable , the rangey you will have bits flying off it if you really try do some proper stuff . But it’s the depth of engineering and build quality of the G that sets it apart from virtually everything else . It’s not actually built by Mercedes but by a specialist Austrian company for Mercedes . As for on road performance , if you want a slick , great handling car just go buy a saloon from any of the major manufacturers their all pretty much the same unless you try driving the wheels off them . The G rides pretty decent for such a capable 4x4 as long as you understand your driving probably the best off road capable machine there is . All this talk of it won’t go over 110 or 120 mph is just stupid , drive like that regularly in any car, Ferrari, Porsche or anything and you’ll be banged up pretty quick so what’s the point ? I’d rather be cruising at 80 in comfort and be protected as if inside a tank .

What’s with these videos now? I like the updates on the rental business, but that’s all we get anymore. The channel is called super speeders. You now have an intro with clips of all kids of fun stuff that used to happen on the channel, but nothing like that ever happens anymore. It’s like an intro for a totally different channel.
I’ve driven the g63 multiple times and the Range Rover and the two can’t compare at all. I dream to one day become successful enough to own a g63 hands down on anything else out there of any price point. Not the new generation tho they ruined it
I test pre production cars, lots of makes and models and these included and even the AMG versions are not fun to drive but the AMG sounds great i must say.

I see the same thing in the UK with pimped up off roaders, have you ever driven a land rover defender? They are terrible!! I would take a 90's Toyota Land-cruiser any day of the week over 1, more practical on the road and better off road, plus they won't fall to pieces as fast.

To be fair Rob in the UK the range rovers do get used off road more including custom ones that can hold the shotguns for pheasant shoots. I would have a range rover over any Mercedes any day of the week, especially an overfinch or autobiography version. 😁😁😁

Recently bought a 2005 G55 over a 2008-ish Land Cruiser
I prefer the G because its narrower but still plenty roomy. Fits nicer into my garage. Also, the m113k motor with the 5 speed have a great reputation for durability and are more fun than the Toyota offering
Finally, resale seems stronger on the G55 and while I dont see myself selling anytime soon, its nice to buy smart
