    HOW IT WORKS: These hand warmers use an exothermic (heat-producing) chemical reaction based on the accelerated rusting of iron: exposure to oxygen (by opening the outer airtight package to expose the inner packet containing the ingredients) causes the iron powder to oxidize (rust) and produce heat. Salt acts as a catalyst to speed up the reaction. Activated carbon helps disperse the heat and helps to bring oxygen to the iron particles.

      So its a single use hand warmer unlike those multi use ones that have a small piece of metal inside that when basically spring bend causes the substance to freeze and howhow release alll of its energy in the form of heat while expanding ...

    • @soupwizard
      @soupwizard ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Techischannel Right there's two kinds (that I know of), this is the single use type - the other one you boil in water to cause a chemical reaction to store the energy, then to release the heat later you flex the metal inside which somehow causes crystals to form and that reaction releases heat. Then re-boil to set it up to use again.

    • @Ultrazaubererger
      @Ultrazaubererger ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@markylon Water crystallizes when it freezes. It is also an exothermic reaction. The only difference is the temperature this occurs at.
      You might not call it freezing but it is.
      Edit: Check Wikipedia, it says it right in the first sentence: "Freezing is a phase transition where a liquid turns into a solid".
      The reusable hand warmers use a liquid that it supercooled so it wants the crystallize but it can't because it lacks a "catalyst" (it needs a point to start but there is none). By clicking the metal plate you induce a shock wave that starts the process.

    • @Techischannel
      @Techischannel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markylon Well when stuff crystalizes it does kinda freeze though ... when water crystalizes it gets colder and this is a nature of most matter.
      That said, you can chemically store more energy and through a certain specific input can cause a chain reaction that to one part releases all of that energy in form of heat and second of all the components inside do technically are now too cold to not be liquid.
      Its like water with antifreeze.

    군납 용으로 많이 들어가는데 정말 좋습니다. 주머니안에 넣어두면 약 24시간 정도 따듯합니다. 사용안하실때는 공기뺴서 지퍼팩이나 비닐에 공기빼서 넣어두면 발열이 안되다가 몇일뒤 사용해도 됩니다.

    How do they prevent the reaction when they're sitting in the warehouse after mixing?
    The pallet wrapping robot is so satisfying to watch.

    • @HostileTakeover2
      @HostileTakeover2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reaction only happens in the presence of oxygen. When they mix it, the reaction does start happening as you suspect - you can see the steam coming off at 2:33. Likely there's enough material in those giant bags that the majority isn't reacting while sitting there. Very soon after it's sealed in the package, the reaction stops. But given they can react for 8+ hours, as long as the material isn't exposed for a very long time, there's still plenty of reaction left.

    What prevents the mixture from reacting prior to the point where it is sealed in plastic?

    • @waterlife.1905
      @waterlife.1905 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ingredients looked to be mixed dry. I am thinking water is added last second, sprayed on the product right before being packaged in an airtight package. The "rust" won't start until you open the package and let oxygen in.

    • @adriennecloeter7394
      @adriennecloeter7394 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Potentially they could start reacting, but once it is sealed in the plastic there is no more oxygen so it would stop reacting.

    Once the ingredients are mixed they have to be kept in an oxygen-free atmosphere until packaged. Exposure to air starts the heat producing reaction.

      You can see the packets. When you buy them, they are enclosed in air tight bags. once removed, they get warm/hot and help you stay warm on the cold days. I have used them in hats to help keep my ears warm.

    I prefer the ones where you have a stick of "charcoal", that you light to make it glow, and then you put the lit stick into an isolated box, which you then put into your pocket. Way less waste with those ones, only drawback is that they are a bit smelly, but I don't care. Hunters and fisherman here in Germany usually use this type of heater.
