      I've had the a7iii for 6 months now and I love it! Waiting for the A7IV mostly because of the ergonomics, but If my photographybuisness kicks off just a tad more I think I would get the A7RIV 😁

      Those 100% crops are insane!! I bought the a7III and a7rIII a year ago now and absolutely love them. I use them for TH-cam and for filming content, and I really can't see what they would have to add to the IV for me to upgrade, those would have to be some serious fireworks! I always try to frame in camera, but wow, this is just a whole different level of flexibility when it comes to shooting from the hip and re-framing.

      I own a7iii, a9 and a7r IV and I only use the a7r IV now because of the results. The a9 is amazing to use - but the RAW files have 2 stops less dynamic range so I can't push the slider all the way in lightroom, only about half the way, before the image falls apart. On my a7iii and a7r IV I can push those sliders as far as I want without seeing the highlights or shadows becoming grey and start clipping. It's just very nice to use the a9 because it has no menu lag and no blackout - but I'm willing to sacrifice those for dynamic range and resolution on my a7r IV. :)

    I just dove into the mirror less world with the A7R IV and a 35mm 1.4 and, well......I’m in love. Megapixels aside, the weather sealing, the better body, the non-flappy doors, the crazy fast Eye detect.....I’m so glad this is my first mirrorless after 15 years of Nikon. Also, I’m a photographer first, video second, so yeah....better for my use case.

    Hey there! Chiming in here-- I upgraded to the A7RIV from a Sony A6000.
    As I'm getting into wildlife photography, the 61 megapixels are perfect for being able to get those fine details on animals I'm trying to get photos of from 100+ yards away, especailly for those smaller animals like hummingbirds. Being able to zoom into a photo and get the fur detail on an animal is also incredible, and in a couple of instances I was able to zoom in far enough to actually see my reflection off of the animal's eye
    The large file sizes are a little bit of an issue, but I've also got my camera set up to save down to a smaller 26 MP file for stuff like travel photography or for instances where I don't need a crazy amount of detail. I can't really think of any major downsides to this camera beyond the file sizes besides the menu system but that's pretty much par for Sony cameras, most other issues I've faced with it are my own inexperience with photography (just last night I was having difficulties with the autofocus on a coyote in near darkness at about 70 yards away... but maybe that's because I was in near darkness with an f5.6-6.3 telephoto lens? I'd say the camera still performed admirably in what were clearly sub-optimal conditions)
    Overall-- I'm very happy that I got this camera, but I think my uses for it are a little more specialized than most. I definitely fall into 95% photos and 5% video (I use my phone or my A6000 for videos if I'm running a B cam) so I don't know if I could recommend the camera to anyone who doesn't need a stupid amount of detail, but that's what sold it to me over getting an A7iii or an A9

      @JasonVong  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for sharing! It seems like a lot of wildlife photogs really appreciate this camera from my research. I figured I'd chime in as a casual travel photog - really love landscapes and cityscapes with this camera! On your note about AF in the dark, yeah I was experiencing that too but it's understandable, we were in near pitch black environment!

  • @MrTacticalinuit
    @MrTacticalinuit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Went from my 5D mk IV to this, It's been great as a first mirrorless camera. The EVF is really advantageous in many situations despite not being as sharp as a DSLR viewfinder, I manually focus on static objects that I can zoom into to make sure its just right, but other than that I mainly just trust that it will get focus. Like I would trust my 5d Mark IV to nail focus with a single point auto focusing. Though the autofocus does seem to be better in very low light with the 5D, it's good enough on this, and the files have so much greater possibilities.

    I have owned and have used the SONY a7r iv for one month with the SONY G4 24-105mm lense. I use 2 x 128GB SONY TOUGH SD cards. I take landscape to street photography in manual focus. In LRC and PS, 90% of occasions I can go into 100% enlargement and the detail and is still perfect. The detail in the image I get from this camera is amazing. Be aware of the high data of the files, you need high spec computer for handling the data and higher storage capacity. I shoot in RAW 65MB and JPEG 25MB then convert to TIFF zipped after a little processing in some cases. I am very happy with results so far for still photography, I do not do 4K video so I can not comment. I bought the SONY a7r iv for a certain purpose after much research and I can't fault it so far.

Personally I like the idea of a bigger body but the larger mega pixel count would be something that I wouldnt probably take avantage of tits possibility. A7R4 has been one of the best cameras I've ever bought (except for that #cheap EOS RP I've been using lately just for the RF lenses). The only complaint I have about it is its slightly weaker low light performance compared to the A7III.

    I upgraded my a7r2 to the mark 4 and I am very happy I did! I still use my Leica M lenses and focus and A manually. Though I do have Sony GM lenses, I am still very old school when it comes to manual focus and aperture use. So very happy with the Mark 4... no videos, just stills, that’s what I do. The GM lenses focus very fast though.

    Thinking about picking up a second body to pair with my a7 III next year based on the clients I've got and I'm in a similar spot of looking at an a9 or the a7R III/IV. The things that have me really looking at the R IV are the ergonomics and the ability to crop in with events.

    • @AudioGoldProductions
      @AudioGoldProductions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      CreeseWorks although I haven’t worked with the A9 (1 or 2) I have the A7iii and A7Riv and the R4 is incredible for events! Unless you are doing the fastest of sports the burst speed is plenty fast enough on the R4 and with UHS-ii cards clears decently as well.
      I have considered an A9 just out of curiosity for some sports stuff but honestly I have gotten some incredible pictures with cropping that I would be scared to use the A9 and not have as much cropping power!

    Personally going to hold out for an A7IV to update the A7III. The R4 is somewhat tempting for the newer focusing features and ability to crop... but it's wayy overkill and probably isn't as good at higher iso/low light. I think a 30-36mp A7IV with the updated autofocus would be ideal

      Palentier basically it’s the same like cropping in post but in terms of DOF.the real advantages is the focus area cover the entire frame while using crop mode,and the increase buffer size from about 68 to 220+ in compressed raw because the file size are smaller.

    I got the RIV on Edu discount. So far, I like the autofocusing and way better EVF. Paired with GM glass and my just recently acquired 50 /2 voigtlander APO, the resolution and detail is amazing. I don't have to use focus peaking on my manual lenses anymore, the EVF is that good. Focus tracking is noticeably better also when I use autofocus lenses. The only downside so far is, I have little hands and the bigger body makes the RIV feel like a brick, but I've gotten used to it now.

I'm thinking of the medium format Fujifilm 50 S II, but the camera's AF point is slow and the focus is slow compared to the aps c sensor and full frame, and the camera's lenses are very expensive …. Goodness you dished out a lot of facts and information! Thanks for the in depth well thought through analysis. This camera makes me consider diving into the Sony ecosystem as an alternative to the wonderful Panasonic mft ecosystem I truly love and enjoy. I remain envious of the Sony low light & autofocus capability and when I decide to add full frame DSLM video acquisition to our company line up of offered services Sony is going to get a long hard look. The cropped in shots on the Sony are just amazing and because we already capture in 4k or 6K and deliver in HD for online distribution of most projects the high resolution allows pan and scan re-composition that just gives more creative freedom in post. Alas I too also want full frame 60p and higher capture capabilities so I will be keeping our cash in the account until Sony delivers more in that area.
    We will continue to see how Sony responds to the needs of video centered DSLM creatives in the future.

    Other reviews for the A7r4 have remarked on too much noise at high iso and more noticeable camera shake due to the extreme resolution. Did you experience either (or both)?

    Nice video Jason always like your work :) one thing i would do with the Riv is to shoot jpg and raw the same time but with jpg you shoot low file size 10M or 24M for mobile and general purposes and should you need to heavily crop any of the photos load up the raw into photoshop and you have the full file. Cheers!

    Jason, I have the Sony A7C that I use for video and I wouldn't plan on this for video, I do photography of backyard birds and birds and wildlife out in nature. I am considering the Sony A7RIV primarily for the crop 26MP for that extra reach (I have the 100-400mm GM right now), but wonder whether than is overkill and should just wait for the Sony A7IV (I used to have the A7iii and liked it - got rid of it for the A7C). I don't really need the 61MP for anything., had thought about the A7Riii where it would be 18MP in crop, should be okay. Any thoughts as to what would drive your decision?

    Great video bro. I think I would have jumped on the $1000 off deal if I had seen it. But I really want to wait for the a7iv. I want to see if it’s as great as I hope it will be. Haha I did get that same glitch out on Instagram with the A7RIII xD. I opted for the R3 over the R4 on the edu account with b&h. The ergonomics was too big for my small Asian hands (lol). Maybe I feel like the R4 was prematurely released so it’s suppose to have even more potential than what it could’ve been. I think the way those sensors or processor renders image is what really intrigues me. The R3 sure has a lot more natural contrast than the A7II 🤩.

I'm keeping my camera for another year or until the price goes down significantly. I'll like to eventually upgrade for the better auto focus, ergonomics and because I'm a heavy cropper. Hmm.. of course if Nikon comes out with a decent mirrorless, I'm switching back. 😁

    Those who say resolution doesn't matter once its resized and viewed online, yes, it does. Thats why Sony downsamples 6k video into their 4k video, its shot in a higher resolution and just looks better, even when resized. If it didn't, they would just shoot straight 4k. A photo shot at 61MP and resized to the same size as a 24MP file is going to look better. The same way that 6k video resized to 4k looks better.
