Angel's explanation for why he wasn't affected confirms what made Angelus different from most other vampires, possibly unique. He killed because he took genuine pleasure in inflicting pain. In short, a true sadist.

So, you should know that - in the States, at least - November is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. This episode originally aired in November of 2001 with the purpose of making people aware of domestic violence. At the end of it's original airing, they actually posted domestic violence hotlines and shelter information.
As difficult as this episode is to watch, it served a greater, more noble purpose.

I think Billy was one of the best episodes of the Season with a disturbing storyline. Billy's ability to influence men to harm women for his voyeuristic addiction illustrates us how dark this show can be. A great conversation with Lilah and Cordelia in an almost 'bitch off' both giving as good as they get with snappy dialogue. It's so disturbing to watch when the gentle Wesley is under Billy's influence and his aggression towards Fred. When Gunn realises as well that he could be affected it's a great scene as he tries to fight the influence. A super scene too when Lilah shoots Billy at the end. Cordelia and Angel's conversation very telling at the end of the episode, as is Fred's conversation with Wesley, who of course has been deeply affected by this. Even though a stand alone episode, some brilliant character development here.

This is a great episode because of the darker nature of the storyline. It really hit the themes out of the park, and Billy himself got exactly what he deserved.
I wonder if Angel caring about Cordelia would have extended to letting Billy out if he knew what Billy did and was like. He said he'd do it again, but I sometimes wonder, because even when he said that he didn't know the full extent of Billy's powers and, for use of a better word, issues.
The PTB's are willing to let innocent people die (by waiting on the vision until a week later) to punish the group for releasing him. This is why they're seen as the AtS version of The Watcher's Council.

    Happy Tuesday, Jules! 💜
“So ready to watch this next episode…” - maybe not quite.
It is good to see Cordelia wanting to take time and improve her offense/defense skills. Taking control of her own life. I too liked these training scenes between the two, and Cordelia, in a true to herself manner, “What if it turned out you were the guy I had to fight?” And Angel - yeah, okay, carry on. 🤭
1:18 - a jump scare - and a big eye opener, all in one. 😱
6:15 - Oh, Wesley - years of field work and yet, still… “… still wet…” 🫣 But you were right on it, as usual Jules! Well noticed! They needed you on the team 😅- You, Cordelia, and Fred? A force to be reckoned with! 🙌
Several great bits of dialogue in this one, but the best was the face off between Lilah and Cordelia, and I have to say, Lilah? As nasty and rough as she is, she is no match for Cordelia.
Angel, melodramatic and noble - in the same episode. 😂
And Gunn? Evidently learned little in the Fredless episode, playing around with the leaking demon head, and this time, just coming in and poking the fresh demon blood, which Wesley, and Fred had been examining.
“It’s not the pain. It’s the helplessness.” Absolutely true. Physical pain can be hard to remember, difficult to recall, once it’s gone, but helplessness is a forever memory, and it is very powerful. Helplessness is devastating, and can haunt you.
This is truly a great view of 3 totally different characters, each facing a debilitating memory - Cordelia, Fred, and Lilah. We see them each take control of their fate. Fred has recovered her wits and confidence, and used both. Cordelia pushes Angel to teach her how to protect her self reliance, and Lilah, as it turns out, isn’t like Lindsey, but does indeed find she has her limits.
And Angel, with Cordelia, at 15:39, when Angel says, “ … hatred and anger? That’s something I lost a long time ago… “ And something he never had, evidently. All his years of brooding has been a boon to him, in facing himself; seeing things as they are.
The opening and closing scenes with Angel and Cordelia were nice, sort of serenity book ending the ugliness of the main story. A well put together episode. 🥰
I hope you are having a very fine Tuesday, Jules.💜🤗💜 It looks like it could still be briskly breezy around you, maybe a cookie, or two, and some coffee inside this afternoon.
It was whatever’s in the frig, for dinner here this evening. Turned out pretty good. Still raining here. I had a weather warning pop-up today - alert for funnels, randomly dropping from the skies, but likely not touching the ground. I didn’t see any, and the threat didn’t keep my little buddy from stopping by, during the video, and later, near dark. So all is well. 😜
As I hope it is for you this day. 😉😊

Tom 🤗💜 I have been really admiring Wesley this season! He's such an interesting character, so clever, and TERRIFYING 🤣 He is the last character I thought we'd have to be scared of! He's right up there with Angelus now haha. Thankfully, it was only temporary... Yikes! I feel so bad for the poor guy. He really is a gentle soul.
Very wonderful insights, as usual, Tom! You may even rival our Wes when it comes to intelligence and a way with words.
Ah, so you had a "girl dinner" 😜 they are one of my favourites! A bunch of random things, maybe some bread or cheese, nothing too hectic. I used to call them "easy dinners" until Girl Dinner made its way around social media. I might have one of those on Friday night! Sounds good to me! So do the cookies hehe! Alas, I have none. Yes, we are having similar sort of overcast/rainy weather, Tom! I'm back to wearing my sweatpants during the day and wondering where summer went. But it's lovely and cozy so I won't complain. Enjoy your evening, dear Tom. Keep an eye out for your buddy, and mine is still clinging to the nest 🤗💜

I've seen that certain Angel fans over the years who hate men consider this their favorite episode, because it seems to imply that all males have this subconscious urge to bash women. Lilah explicitly states it. But this is false, as evidenced by Angel. Angel had no such tendencies that could be brought out, which was the most subversive element in an otherwise man hating narrative, as interpreted by Lilah. Joss loves subverting narratives from both sides of the political spectrum. Just when you think it's all men, Angel proves that it's not. That's something certain haters don't like, but oh well.

I mean this episode was written by two men. Also, to call it a "man hating narrative" is short-sighted at best.

    • @davidmeadows5627
      @davidmeadows5627 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@Crinbo Nowhere does it say that that's the reason it doesn't work. In fact, Angel explains to Cordy why it didn't work later on, when he says he never hated women or his victims. Billy just said that he never did this on a vampire before, but to say that that's the reason it didn't work is speculation. Also, as I said, the man-hating narrative was provided by Lilah, and by certain bigoted fans, which, I agree, are short sighted.

Everyone has darkness within their subconscious that even they themselves are not aware of. If yours were on full display, you might not be so judgmental. Certain dark parts within the deepest and most buried aspects of his psyche doesn't mean that that's "just who he is," while denying all the other contrary parts that are more conscious than not, unless you want to be incredibly reductive. Fred showed him mercy at the very end due to recognizing that he is, at heart, a good man who was shocked by what he found inside him, because she is a mature person who believes in compassion.

This is such a hard episode to watch, but there's no denying that it's well-written and well-executed. The fact that it makes me feel so uncomfortable is a sign of how good it is. I'm so glad that Cordy, Lilah and Fred all come out on top though, especially Lilah.
Angel's arcs definitely aren't as rigid as Buffy's, with storylines overlapping and not necessarily starting and stopping with the beginning and end of the seasons. Coincidentally though, I believe some of this season's plot threads are about to kick into gear.
Sorry you had to endure the unpleasantness of this episode Jules, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. Here's to happier adventures in the future.
