RIP Fred Ward. He was severely underrated as an actor. He's effortlessly charming in Tremors, and his work in The Right Stuff (one of my favorite movies) as Gus Grissom is wonderful and heartbreaking.

Tremors is the perfect example of a movie that turned out way better than it had any right to be. Solid writing, good characters and well done effects. It spawned many sequels but nothing tops the original
Tremors 2 is fun but yea none of the sequels top the first one for sure.
I wish people would stop mentioning sequels: they're irrelevant

FUN FACT: Kevin Bacon was certain this movie was the end of his career. He was ashamed that he was starring in a movie about giant man-eating worms. Now it's his favorite movie of his own. He couldn't believe what a classic it turned out to be.
He didn't just learn to love it, he made a pilot for a new Tremors TV series a few years ago that never got aired, but you can find the trailer for it online
Also he had said that it was one of his most favorite productions to work on… he had so much fun and chemistry with the cast and crew, it was awesome for him… despite having zero faith of its profitability. ❤

Tremors is a movie you can watch over and over again and still laugh your head off. The characters are so genuine and relatable. Never a dull moment.
This is one of the few movies I've seen where the entire theater audience applauded and cheered at the end. Such a gem.
Fred Ward also did a great job with a mixture of drama and comedy in Remo Williams: The adventure begins. RIP Fred Ward.

After filming wrapped, Kevin Bacon thought his career was over, being unable to survive doing "the worm movie." Arguably, Tremors did more to save his career than any other project, aside from maybe Friday the 13th.
I love that the town of "yokels" actually tries smart ideas and uses their brains to get out, instead of everybody just acting dumb all the time. Fantastic cast, memorable lines and a solid script, truly deserves its place amongst the best B movies imo.
Now that you mention it, it's one of the things that makes the movie so fun, in a what-would-you-do kinda way. I remember the first time watching it and trying to figure out what I'd do. Especially because they try them, and some fail, and some work at first, but fail later, etc. Has a very D&D feel to it.
The movie is the perfect.... PERFECT homage to 50's B movies and I will die on that hill! The chemistry between not just the leads but everyone(you really feel like they all lived in the town for a while and so on), the creature effects, taking itself seriously but not too seriously . . .like the town itself . . . . PERFECTION! ;)

Some (slightly snooty people) may dismiss this film as a cheap Jaws pastiche, but it's so much more than that. A ton of heart and comedy, a fantastic ensemble cast, great sound design and so many delightful setups and payoffs all throughout the film. Loved it as a youngin, appreciate it even more now that I know a ton more about how the sausage is made so to speak. Bona fide classic in my book.
Those people clearly don't remember that there was no pole vaulting in Jaws.

Tremors has more affection for its townspeople than Jaws does. In Jaws they mostly serve to underscore Brody’s feelings of alienation, in Tremors they're made likeable to heighten the stakes.

apparently this script is taught in writing classes for being nearly perfect for what it is. no wasted details, characters act mostly intelligently (damn melvin) based on what they know. nobody doing the stupid things to advance the plot. very little wasted detail.
This movie, the blob (or killer klowns) and Hot Fuzz all deserve to be taught in screenwriting class.

Kevin Bacon was bemused for a long time that folks loved this movie as much as they did. He's talked about how for him, the memory of shooting it is bittersweet due to the fact that aside from being incredibly down about his then-failing career, he was also dealing with the sorrow of having a member of his family being severely ill at the time, so he was feeling anything but lighthearted. Still, he stepped up as always and gave a knock-out performance.

By the way, it's original title was going to be Land Sharks. But because Saturday Night Live had a character by that name at the time, the title was changed.
This movie is so much better than it has any right to be. The basement scene with Reba and Michael Gross got a ton of laughs in the theater, best scene by far😂
This movie has one of those perfect screenplays. The performances by the cast bring it to life. It’s one of those 10 outta 10 movies for me.

Kevin Bacon was freakin out that it was going to kill his career "I can't believe I'm doing a movie about underground worms!" But then later said it was the most fun he's ever had making a movie.
The little shovel is called an entrenching tool (at least in the U.S. Army). It folds up for easy storage. It can also be locked into place with the shovel head at a right angle to the rest to use as a sort of pick/scooper.
They're cute little tools, nowhere near as tough as our old M-1956 E-tool from the VN era. Probably the best E-tool ever made.

The tri-fold is nice to carry, but when there's work to be done, you want the heavy one.
Something I didn't realize until I read it somewhere, is during the first act; a lot of the scenes end in silence and the next scene starts with a JARRING sound effect. A lot of really clever uses of sound that pay off like when they're walking around the doctors house they're clanging around the ramp, well later in the movie that's where all the tension comes from; avoiding simple things like that. And the soda machine? This movie is just perfect in its execution :D great reaction as always.

Taking off on the horror/SF trope of the scientist who is an expert in absolutely everything because he/she just is a scientist.
Ya that's a great trope buster. Truth is most scientists are very knowledgable about a very specific aspect of one scientific discipline.
I have a cousin who is a cellular biologist and I asked him about his work once. It only took a few seconds to realize that I would need to have at least two years of university level biology to even begin to understand what he was talking about.

The rec room might be my favorite scene in all cinema. Love who it starts radio cutting out, log shot of the house, a moment of brief silence followed by the crackling gunfire. Makes me laugh every time.
The reports coming out of the basement and being audible all the way across the valley sends me.
There's a reason they use this movie in film school. Such a perfect movie. I wouldn't change a thing.
I saw this in the theater back in 1990. It was one of the best movies I'd ever seen. It's one of my all time favorites from both my childhood and adult years.
The End Credits song in this movie is sung by the main actress Reba McEntire.
I love this film because of Fred Ward's performance. This film shows what working men are really like; I don't know any other film that does it as well, maybe "The Misfits" with Clark Gable. Ward knew what working men talked like and comported themselves. Kevin Bacon saw what Ward was doing and incorporated his behavior into his own performance. They got it right.

I remember renting this from Blockbuster on VHS when I was a kid in the early 2000's and it has since become one of my favorite movies ever. Such a great blend of comedy, horror, likeable characters, and cheesiness. Glad you reacted to this classic.

Love Tremors, it is one of my pieces of proof that really the main thing that makes for a good or bad movie is whether the movie knows what it is. This is a movie that knows EXACTLY what it is, and is all that much better and more fun because of it! Really enjoyed your reaction (particularly laughing at people getting eaten and the town getting destroyed).
Me and my family adore this movie! The campy lines, the comedy, the practical effects, and the surprise when the "grabboids" are finally revealed. So good. I never get tired of it.
This is a movie that if I'm feeling sick, it's wonderful to watch because it's silly and fun. And I'm extremely glad that Ames mentioned the practical effects. CGI can be great, but nothing beats good practical effects. So much fun 😊

Nothing in this movie is cruft, no wasted scenes or dialog, everything contributes to moving the story forward. It’s Perfection.
If you want to see a small town, look up Bowlusville, Ohio. Mom lived there, population 16, more dogs than humans.
Made my Grandma watch this when I was like 15 ir came out, just watched it at her house, never knew she could laugh like that, wonderful memories

Saw this in the theatre in '90, and on IMAX at an anniversary retrospective. Tremors is one of my guilty pleasure movies.
This is a great movie I also recommend the sequel Tremors 2 Aftershocks it is also just a fantastic fun sequel
The puppetry and animatronics in this are excellent, and it's just a plain old fun movie.
If you don't feel like watching the whole series, I'd at least recommend the ultimate "prequal," Tremors 4. It shows "Burt" in a whole new way.

Absolutely one of the best creature features ever. I actually got to see the pre-showing for free. Some guy at the mall just handed me two tickets for the night. Grabbed a friend from the store and went. Had NO idea what it was about (the ad campaign stunk). But we both laughed our asses off. Told everyone to go see it XD

I'd call Tremors my guilty pleasure, but I have no guilt over it. I love this movie; it always lifts my mood. I've watched it so many times I can say the dialog along with the characters.

The basement scene also has an excellent transition shot when it focuses on the rifle on the floor.

@@dessertstorm7476 the second was awesome, the third was okay, the tv series was great, and the fourth was fine. The ones after went further downhill, but considering the decreasing budget they weren't as good as what came before, but they were worth a single watch, just not enough to watch more than once.

The name of this movie here is Vermes malditos. something like "damn worms"

O, I'm very excited for this! It's one of the premier, have-fun, feel-good movies of the horror genre.
Sometimes movies mean so much, and sometimes they are just SO MUCH FUN. Both have their places.
Tremors was a tribute to the 1950's style atomic creature movies set in 1990.. If you want another great Fred Ward movie: "Remo Williams - The Adventure Begins" (1986) It's a action thriller with slight humorous overtones. I still laugh at the scene where his CIA handler trying to come up with his code name by reading the company that made his hospital bedpan. 😆
Tremors 2 is just as fun. They made like eight sequels but only 1 and 2 are good enough.
3 isn't as good as 1 or 2 but I still like it. Everything after that was bad though
Tremors 4: The Legend Begins isn't too bad, it went back to the roots of the original....it is a prequel set in the old West. It shows how the graboids got discovered and how the town of Perfection NV got started, with Michael Gross as Hiram Gummer (great-grandfather of Bert Gummer). So I rank it as the 3rd best one in the series behind 1 & 2 in my opinion...
The first 4 are pretty good and fun. After that it kinda went off the walls but the original 4 will always hold a place in my heart. I need to watch the show
1 and 2 are great. The last one was objectively terrible. Everything in between was fine.

I first saw Tremors as a VHS rental as a kid and I loved it. Whenever it came on TV as a TV movie I always watched it over again but the TV version changes all the swear words not non swear words like Kevin Bacon saying "Fool you!" when the graboid hits the concrete and kills itself, which had its own certain charm. I also love it because its a horror movie that takes place pretty much entirely during the day in the sun, and the whole thing is just very original.
That is the Jurassic Park girl, Ariana Richards. 11 years old. Then 14 in Jurassic Park as Lex Wild how fast kids grow.
She was in Spaced Invaders, which came out the same year, and just... needs at the very least 4 or 5 beers to be enjoyable, sadly.
This movie was purposefully a B-Movie from the 50s made for the 80s. What a classic.

I remember when this came out Hollywood was losing itself to drama or the next Batman blockbuster. It was a relief to bring back a great monster movie. Fun scary and simple. Your reaction is exactly what we walked out the theater like laughing! Keep them coming

I’m so glad you enjoyed this movie. Probably more than Kevin Bacon during the filming. He had fun, but he was worried it’d ruin his filming career. Anyway, this is one of my favorite series ever. Even the tv series is fun. If you really enjoyed it I highly recommend the next movie.
The idea for the story originated when the two writers were working on another project. They were sat on a large boulder and one of them asked 'what would happen if there was something which won't let us off this rock?' They caught lightning in a bottle with the script, cast and direction for sure.
This movie strikes the perfect balance between comedy and horror. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but deliberately leans into the cheese and the camp, which is a big part of what makes it work so well. The cast is awesome, and the chemistry between them is phenomenal, particularly between Val and Earl. The effects are all practical and extremely well done, which is why this movie still holds up better today effects-wise than many much later movies. All in all it's an absolute gem, a 10/10 and one of my all time favorites.
In the movie industry, Tremors is considered to have one of the most perfect scripts of all time.
