I trekked those steps in 2012 maybe... and when I got up to the garage ( it was painted dark brown) and it opened. A lady stepped out looked at me and said " Thelma Todd?" I said Yeah. "Yep this is where it happened"

The problem is...there was lots of corruption going on with the LA Law enforcement, and also with the coroners of that time period!..The corruption included Mafia types, bribes and payoffs, etc. Where there is money, there frequently is corruption. In the case of LA, there was corruption between the Hollywood moguls, and the cops. That sort of thing likely is still happening, in a more sophisticated way, even now!..So yeah, we might never know just how/why Thelma died under such dire circumstances. She liked to play with fire, and maybe got burned. Sad, because she certainly had a few more good years of being a mid-level Star. Back then, women were usually cast aside by the time they hit 35 or so.

In the early 90’s I read Hot Toddy and became obsessed with Thelma and her death. I grew up in Santa Monica and knew of the Sidewalk Cafe. I had to see it all for myself. It was so much harder to find the set of garages. A local homeowner told me that mudslides cut through the hillside decades ago and wiped out the road that used to take you directly to the garages. She gave me directions to locate Thelma’s garage and I eventually found it. With book in hand I sat leaning against the garage door and read the account of her last hours. The sun was starting to go down. I stood up to leave and an older man appeared in the windows above the garage and was yelling at me although I could not hear anything from outside. He was clearly very angry. It scared me enough I left embarrassed that I had clearly trespassed and pissed off the occupant. Back at the neighbors home I thanked them for getting me the right directions and told them what happened. I was then told that nobody lives above the garages, those spaces are storage rooms only, and that nobody would be tall enough to be seen in those windows. She believed I saw Roland Wests ghost and that locals believe those properties to be haunted. I’ve never forgotten Thelma’s sad fate. I do not believe for a second that she died in that car. She was dumped there.

I grew up in LA in the seventies and the elementary school I went to (McKinley) would play silent movies in the auditorium when the smog was bad and also when it rained. Intriguing video. Based on her facial injuries and a dislodged filling/crown, I'm convinced, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she was (first) rendered unconscious due to her head being brutally forced into the steering wheel. Whichever side of her jaw had the dislodged filling/crown is the side of her head that made direct contact with the steering wheel. Hot Toddie was _definitely_ murdered.

Thelma Todd was a beautiful actress and her last role was in Laurel n Hardys 'The Bohemian Girl' which near the opening she sang a gypsy song. Unfortunately she failed to turn up the next day for filming which after time her untimely death was registered. Check out HOT TODDY movie with Loni Anderson playing the role. Have this book which is based on her and the investigation. Great reporting Scott! In Monkey Business Groucho says to her ,'You're a woman that's been getting nothing but dirty brakes, we can clean and tighten your brakes but you'll have to stay in the garage all night!' Eerie?

I believe that she was murdered. She had help up those steps. Then she was beaten up and to make it look like suicide the car was turned on to get enough carbon monoxide in her lungs. Makes me wonder if she ever kept a diary?

Terrible for her to die so young. Keep up the good work, Scott. I've been a fan of yours since I stumbled upon FAD years ago (Ennis Cosby was the one who led me there. Strange, I know). I think it was an accident. A .13 BAL is nothing for someone that drinks on a regular basis. She probably wouldn't have even shown any signs of impairment at that level if she drank every day. More than likely, she had the car running in the garage, and as the carbon monoxide began to suffocate her, she felt tired and turned the car off. That didn't remove the carbon monoxide in the air, and she eventually passed out from a combination of carbon monoxide and alcohol, and died. With a five hour gap in between the time she arrived home and her death, she was likely very drunk when she first arrived home, and likely fell at some point when she was climbing the stairs and injured herself. With a .13 after five hours of abstinence, she was likely near the point of alcohol poisoning when she originally arrived home. That could certainly explain her injuries.

Takes more than a nod hitting a steering wheel to create the damage inflicted to her face . The whole investigation stinks. I was watching one of the shorts.. it was being shown as footage during the monologue about her life. First time I" had laughed at anything for a long time. Butt the short made me see that it was this action that she had done, all those Hal Roach shorts that likely inspired Lucy and the other greats that came along later. She was so brilliant and I wish she had been given the opportunity to live out her lifetime. She lit up the world ffs.
