I always enjoyed hand winding pickups when I worked at G&L ,I was lucky to be a part of the full pickup process , making the fiber, bobbins winding and potting.............it was a great time in My life
It seems like G&L is really about what it is - making instruments and making them well, where as you look at Fender and you see tons and tons of pretty much the same guitar with different sub-names and a LOT of player promotion...
I have so many innovative ideas I want to bring to pickup design, I have already worked in the world of sustainer development and testing, the ground floor of fishman fluence but those ideas are my give aways. I have been hiding away in the Dad life and dont worry my ideas will all happen evemtually!
Buy a g and l and you will never regret it. Your fenders will be sold no matter how much you liked them. Trust me. Buy one and you will buy several. LOL. Awesome guitars.😎😎😎
I agree . Infact I spent ages finding a good fender . In the end I found a late 70s strat that was incredible . Generally speaking fenders today suck . They are just cheap sounding in comparison to G&L
@@andrewslads Well I guess I lucked out cause I have a 10year old strat that is the best guitar I've ever had. Better than my Asat? Who know, I love em both, they're very different.
I love all the reviews you guys at music store live post! You guys should review the g&l Bluesboy 90, solid and semi hollow, that you have on your web site
I have G&L tribute asat classic, had it played, wool lubed the next to reduce sticky poly when playing gigs outside.... and I got rid of my fenders within 2 years. Built my own low power tele and my own low power twin. Epiphone ES-335 Traditional Pro rounds out my gear. I need nothing else.
In 1981 G&L made a Strat called the F-100 Series II, it had a mahogany body and two humbuckers of Leo's design. I think Leo was trying to make a Strat sound like a Les Paul. I have a lefty that I hardly play anymore, it's too much of a collector's item.
These sales guys crack me up. I love G&L guitars, but I can’t stand their sales and marketing strategy. That nonsense about the 3rd string and Z pickups is just silly. I have a Les Paul and a Comanche (as well as many other guitars) The Les Paul humbuckers have no problem picking up a 3rd string bend. In my opinion there is no better humbucker sound than a Les Paul PAF thru a Marshall amp. What I like about the Comanche and the Z pickups is the tremendous range of quality sounds you can get with this guitar. The single coil sound from the Comanche is good, but it is not as good as a Strat. But..., and this is huge to me, it doesn’t have the Strat hum (which I hate). The Telecaster sound from the Comanche is good, but not as good as a Telecaster. The Humbucker sound from Comanche is good, but I prefer the Les Paul. What I do love about my Comanche USA is it is very high quality, both in materials and craftsmanship (far better than Fender or Gibson), and it is very versatile. I play many types of music, and with my Comanche and a modeling amp I am a very happy and content person. I still play my Les Paul, my Strat, my Tele and my many other guitars, but my go to guitar is my G&L Comanche. I love the feel, the playability, and the many sounds of this guitar. Those idiots at G&L should hire me to lead their marketing and sales... “third string bends” my ass!
Paf: to full coil side by side. It'been stated tha the zone beetween coils y frecuency canceled zone. Split (aligned) coils: novak (tele pick ups) and fender (strat an tele) built pickups that way. Exposing that frecuency cacelation between coils. In side by side coils the poles keep picking...in aligned coils there is transition. Leo kew that from the P bass days.
If you catch wind of this reply, I encourage you to watch this video suggested by TH-cam's algorithm: th-cam.com/video/Cgw4oW_KHww/w-d-xo.html G&L's MFD and Z-Coil pickups have their own thing going on. They are not trying to emulate Strats, Teles, and Les Pauls, so saying the G&L pickups don't sound as good is not only a moot point, it also your subjective opinion. Paul Gagon is not a salesperson, at least not in the traditional sense of the word. He is a pickup designer.
Paul Gagon is not a salesman. He's G&L's senior engineer. Sure, he's pitching his products. Duh! It's a product review by a store, genius. As for the comment on the pickups, I've tried them and they have less noise than any other sc I've tried. Maybe you just don't know how to use them and should to practice some more before making any more idiotic comments like that.
Pablo Gaete So you tried them? Big f*cking deal. That must make you an expert. I own them you moron and I have played them for 1000s of hours. Maybe you should go back and reread my comment, you idiot, you might learn something.
@@charlie-obrien OMG... your aptitude of getting what someone else says is really scary. Did I ever say G&L used Jackson pickups? :O If you would have learn your lessons before interviewing someone, you eoukd have known what he did in life!
@@ratt669 Are you the same guy who posted the comment? It doesn't matter. My point is that there is no need to worry (as you infer) about the G&L pick ups. They have been excellent over the years according to most reviewers. If you had a bad experience with another brand... Who cares!?

I have been waiting for a video like this that offered an explanation that was deep about the MFD's.
Got a Comanche Fullerton Deluxe a few years ago. I can't say enough about how much I love the Z-Coil pickups. They sound incredible!
It seems like G&L is really about what it is - making instruments and making them well, where as you look at Fender and you see tons and tons of pretty much the same guitar with different sub-names and a LOT of player promotion...
Thank you! I’m diving into G&L research (again) and this is the video I’ve been looking for. Very helpful.
The 3 pickups telecaster and the Z pickups are great improvement to the guitar world

Is a humbucking a'la Van Halen tone available by engaging the middle & bridge Commanche pick-ups?

Wouldn't pole piece magnets be effectively the same as MFDs? Or does having the magnet outside of the coil make that big of a difference?
Yes. Break the bar magnet off a ceramic pickup and you'll know.
Did the editor put a "hand held" filter on the close up of Paul? It looks stupid.
I want a Jerry Cantrell pickup. How do I get one????
Love the mfd pickups in my Doheny.
Question: is there some type of thread locker on the MFD pickups? Anyone? Anyone altar their pickups? I did! I figured it's what Leo would want!
That handheld camera work was shite.
Mark M well I think that’s great that someone got a job instead of a stand😂😂
We should deport all the stands, then they wouldn't be taking all of our jobs.
Should be 'peeked

They don't and never have put a Jackson pick up on a G&L guitar, so I think your "concern" is just weak trolling.
