      Welcome! And thanks for the kind words. Just posted part 2. Had a rash of customer jobs but things finally calmed down enough to do the other video.

    That’s disappointing about the misfit. I’ve had an Indonesian G&L ASAT Tribute for about ten years now which has been wonderful after setup since new. The only thing I might want to change “one of these days” is the slightly murky neck humbucker, but haven’t so far usually being on bridge or bridge/neck.
    My Fenders Gibson PRS Rick and Dean usually all get to stay safe at home while the Tribute has some fun and earns some cash. It was so good I soon ended up with three Tributes, the third one needed some fret levelling.

    Looks like the Placentia series. Wouldn't have recommended those even before I saw this video. Wish G&L wouldn't have put their name on these. I have a made in Fullerton Fallout that is awesome.

      Yeah, this one seems "ok" (after a few fixes) but quality-wise, I certainly wouldn't put it above a Squier Classic Vibe, or Custom series.

    No need to tension a truss on a new neck before setting up for the player, it depends on the strings they play. I've played the heaviest on down to 8s each set you got to adjust hight and distance on each saddle, since the nut is stationary. So the neck can trick you depending on the tension, there is no set rules on how you set up a guitar per se

    • @GuitarsDoneRight
      @GuitarsDoneRight  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite the contrary. There ARE set rules. Ensuring proper relief height via truss rod tension is first thing you do after tuning strings.

    "Placentia"? That just makes me think "afterbirth", which is not something I'd want to associate with a guitar.

    • @TonefulPraise
      @TonefulPraise 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s the name of the historic town next to Fullerton, in Southern California and in Latin so it makes sense.

    • @ParaBellum2024
      @ParaBellum2024 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TonefulPraise Thanks, yes I get that, but even as a town name it seems a bit odd. I just Googled how the town got its name, and came up with: Placentia is derived from a Latin word meaning "pleasant place to live." The similarity with afterbirth actually makes sense, because where better to start your life than in the placenta, a pleasant place to live. Undoubtedly the same derivation. FWIW my home town was named to mark the place where a defeated king was hanged!

    That's a new guitar out of the box, as soon as I saw that the bridge pick up was having an issue, I would have called MF and ask them for a return shipping tag...

      Yeah id have done the same. Contact MF. I stopped buying guitars thru them years ago. If you want to get a guitar without a lot of these issues, their are other places that do a much better job with the guitar before you get it. I dont think MF does much of any check before they ship. Sweetwater has like a 52 point inspection of something. Go with a place like that. MF = GC and they just dont give a shit, kinda like Gibson these days.

    Interesting comment about using string height to set the string radius instead or tilting the saddles. I'll have to give that a shot. Makes sense to give the saddle equal footing.

    • @GuitarsDoneRight
      @GuitarsDoneRight  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know how that slanting saddles stuff got started - someone overthinking before drinking their coffee I guess, and then it just spread. But it's not good for your setup!

    Is that a tribute series?

    • @GuitarsDoneRight

      No Mike, it's..well, here it is right off the invoice -
      G&L Placentia ASAT Bluesboy Electric Guitar Espresso
      It's made in China. Now, I'm not knocking China, they do some mean guitars. But they can junkify some too and this guitar had its share of "issues".

      @@calsurflance5598 Maybe it isn't, but is still guitar with USA company name. It shouldn't be so bad. Many of cheapest... I don't want to name countries... guitars are way better crafted than this.

    Even G&L can make some bad samples.
    If it had a Fender decal on the headstock i would not have been surprised, but this one seems a shoddy sample.
    We will have to wait for part 2 to see what else they got wrong.

    • @GuitarsDoneRight
      @GuitarsDoneRight  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Roger! That's a common thought among players, but when an experienced player "trys" a guitar, he is essentially making the same measurements I'm showing in the video, but with his senses and experience. That's fine if it works for you, but when working on guitars for others, I've found it's best to go by measurements.
