I'm one of your fans from USA, old timer I've written on your site before. I just have to say I have several G&L's, surprised you never tried one. I love ALL of mine, I have one with an "F" hole in burnt orange, AWESOME & 2 Bluesboy's a Pelham blue & Natural. Like I said, love em ALL, much better IMO than a few Squires I sold off to get more G&L's. Granted I have many Fender MIA/MIM/MIJ Other than my MIJ I kind of like these better. I have many other brands like yourself, Gibson, PRS, Epi's etc. I enjoy your waffling! LMAO! I wish I were closer to you, not only for playing, just chatting & comparing instruments. Like I said I'm an old timer too & I enjoy everything you do! Try a few others like I mentioned, I think you'd be happy with ALL of them. Cheers mate! Stay well!

Since I discovered this guitar she became the only T-Type in my arsenal. I've got an older model with swamp ash body which makes her a bit heavy but I'm a big boy and I manage. Installed Graphtech locking tuners and string tree for no specific reason just because I can. I keep saying she needs a new switch but it still hasn't failed so I keep it in. This brand is severely underrated, the tribute series offer great vfm! Just my 2 cents, cheers!

Great build and finish quality, hardware. Pickups and controls work well. Quite a package for the money, so I have another guitar to consider now. Thanks, Colin. More time to think about things now, went on a search for a G&L but these are all now out of stock, you must have inspired a lot of people to buy them. I bought a butterscotch one of these a few years back (can’t even remember why) think I paid £399 from Andertons. Out of the box it was a sweet sounding mainly well put together guitar. As we do as enthusiasts we mess about with guitars, I wasn’t totally bonding with the MFD’s so decided to put some Bare knuckle Boot Camp True Grit pickups in it and discovered the MFD neck pickup was quite badly damaged and just screwed into the body at an angle to hide the issue. By this time I had owned the guitar at least 6 months so didn’t feel I could send it back. So went ahead and put in the Bare Knuckles and loved the result. This encouraged me to do further upgrades so got a full wiring harness from Bloodstone and investigated drop in locking tuners and ended up with some Graphtech Ratio tuners which I can confirm are literally drop in with no need for the extra bits that come in the box with them. Now this is my favourite Tele style guitar (I own a few). Mine doesn’t have the body carve presume that must be a later update to the model. Unplugged as you demonstrated it’s so resonant and bright which to me always translates to a sweet plugged in sound. Been literally waiting years for a decent video on these guitars. Thanks Colin.

    • @ssstenning
      @ssstenning ปีที่แล้ว

Forgot to mention the neck and fretwork on mine was perfect can’t ever remember having adjusted the neck relief got pretty low action with no buzz. I change the strings occasionally and give it a wipe down and it’s totally trustworthy. Tempted to try the Larry Carlton T7 (I think it’s called) waiting for your assessment.

  • @jfinester
    @jfinester ปีที่แล้ว +4

Good to see you doing some Telecasters! G&Ls are fantastic guitars; even the Tribute line is killer. The major advantage to buying an American-made G&L is that you have better hardware and more options available-the Tributes have only a couple of finishes available per model, and if you don’t like the standard neck shape you’re pretty much out of luck. The American line has several different neck shapes and wood options available-I have a 1-11/16” nut width on my ASAT Z-3, with a birdseye maple neck and ebony fingerboard with binding. Just an example of what you can get in the US line. But the Tributes are apparently good quality too-they use the American-made pickups on those.
OK, a couple of corrections-ASAT is pronounced “Aysat”, not “a$$hat”. It’s a US military acronym for “Anti-SATellite”. Apparently, Leo Fender liked the idea of a guitar shooting down things in space! The model originally had two of the large MFD pickups, and was called the Broadcaster-and Gretsch made them change the name! Deja vu all over again! That model is still available as the ASAT Special, and those pickups are unbelievably great! I couldn’t get three of them on mine, although they’ve done some like that in the past, and maybe they’ll do it now from their Custom Shop; I don’t know!

Glad you’ve come to the G&L camp! The ASAT Classic is the quintessential rock telecaster, those pickups just wanna rock out. If you are in the mood for something different, check out the ASAT Special. The Special got the Jumbo MFD pickups and I think they sound like bright P90s, a P90 had a baby with a Telecaster. Fantastic video as always! Stay free.

I own 5 G&L USA guitars. 4 strats and an asat special 3 bolt. I can honestly say I play them more often than my USA Fender collection. I keep falling back to them to the point I put vintage MFD pickups in my favorite USA stratocaster and wired it treble bass. These are fantastic guitars that really lend themselves to great sound.
I'm not familiar with the tribute line but if I were shopping for a beginners priced guitar I would be all about that line instead of Squire.
There is a difference in the necks and bodies from tribute to USA, I'm not sure what it is but the G&L USA factory has verified used guitars for me. It's a real problem counterfeiting tributes as USA guitars as it makes a huge difference in price.
One of the few places you can have a custom guitar built for just about the same price as production.
I am pretty sure they don't differentiate in pickup strength or impedence neck to bridge in the modern plain single coil guitars. I will say they have a pickup similar to a jb in the deluxe legacy that's modern. The older legacy deluxe has a Seymore Duncan JB in it that came stock.
That big plate under the mfd pickup is a noise shield. Older mfd pickups have copper plate much the same.

I like them G&L guitars. I actually worked there at the factory for about 5 minutes a couple of years ago (until I got let go after getting the dreaded Bieber 19 - for the second time in 2020)!
I know I had a couple on my wishlist - but, now I can't recall which ones! but, though I was hired as a QC/set-up tech, I barely worked on any of them. pretty much everyone was moving boxes around for a while. I'd love to go back - it was kind of a fun job (and at least it's sort of entertainment industry related. as I may have mentioned to ya before, I'm a former child actor and then a childish actor in my adult life).
yeah, Dave and John Jr are the bigwigs at the company (and they also own BBE). the nuts are Tusq if I recall correctly
on my second day working there, John Sr was thrown a birthday bash. so, the company secretary came into the shop in the back where I was and gave me a balloon!!! no lie, too! a little embarrassing that the "new kid in school" was getting special treatment.

They do some great things , swamp ash bodies, nice necks and fret work, American pickups and hardware. Don’t forget you can adjust your individual pole pieces on your pick ups and can recreate staggered pick up sounds! I just started finding some great overdrive tones with the tone rolled back on the bridge pick up! And I recently upgraded the nut & string tree (graph tech) and tuners (hipshot open staggered locking) and I’m in love even more ! Keep the great content coming!

    Hi Colin!
I really enjoyed that. G&Ls are highly underrated, and they do go under the radar. I personally think that the headstock throws people off at first. Not that they're bad or ugly necessarily, they're just different. People buy with their eyes and I've been guilty of this before as well. Then I played one. I worked at a very large box retailer at the time with approximately 1000 guitars in the store including some very high-end pieces. We weren't a G&L dealer, but we bought one in used. It was an ASAT tele style made overseas. The pickups were different though. It had what looked like two mini p-90s. I picked it up out of curiosity and plugged it in. This thing was killer! I had my choice of custom shop anything to play whenever I wanted, but this one became my go to during down time and I was sad to see it go when it sold. I still remember it approximately a decade and a half later.
I've never seen a deep dive like the one you did on this one and the pickups really fascinate me. They look a little like stacked humbuckers and sounded great in the video. This guitar definitely punches above its weight at the going retail price point. So the price that you got it at makes it an absolute steal for the amount of guitar that you're getting. Whatever tele style guitars you do next will really be up against it when being compared to this one. My guess is that it's a keeper that you won't want to sell, and that it will likely stay in your collection permanently.
I always enjoy your videos, but this guitar made this one even more enjoyable. I even got a little excited when I saw it in the thumbnail before I clicked on it. Thanks for a great video. 👍

One detail about both pickups is that the individual pole pieces have a hex key socket, so you can “balance” the output string by string, for example if you use a wound 3rd G string you can correct any tendency to be too loud.

The ability to adjust each polepiece is handy👍
Getting a scooped tone is easy to achieve by just making the outside polepieces higher than inside.
Then reverse on the other pup for mid boost.
When combined in pup selector middle position the guitar is balanced.
    Great score there Colin 😉👍
    😎👍❤🖖

Nice one Colin, I’ve got a 2020 G&L Tribute ASAT in the blonde with the Cherry fingerboard, humbucker in the neck , Indonesian made , love it , it was the last of the one piece ash body , and they did come with the USA pickups, I upgraded the electronics and neck pup to a Seymour Jazz , these are GREAT. guitars man , mines a keeper at 6lb 10oz , I paid $500 for mine in 2020 , Peace ✌🏻 Colin ,

I do have the Classic Tribute in Walnut Satin. It plays better/smoother than the blonde Fender 1971 version that I had during the nineties. I think these tributes are the best bang for the buck you can get under 500. The only thing I miss is that shrill, high-pitched Buchanan-like twang. But the thang surely rocks and can do some Jazz too!

I've had American fenders and Gibson guitars when I was living in the UK. I stopped playing when I came to Thailand about 10 years ago just started again and I'm shocked by what you can get nowadays for not big money!!! I've also just got a sire t7 fm and let me tell you that is also very good. Keep up the good work bruv .😊

I love tele’s, they suit my size and shape and also my little hands. I read all about G&L and the history and thought is would be good to own one, but I am left handed and used lefties are hard to find. One day, a used lefty Classic Tribute on Reverb and I had to have it. It is in transparent orange with white pickguard and, since I play country style rhythm guitar it matches my orange Gretsch. Now I am looking to fit a Bigsby on it! It plays better than my Fender Player MIM and the pickups are powerful and sweet sounding.

I owned a G@L Strat with MFD Pickups and the pole pieces are adjustable height, using an Allen Wrench. The extra tallness of each Pickup is what I have always heard referred to as "Stacked". In this case it has everything to do with the overall Pickup design and function. No expert here,if I am wrong on anything it's unintentional.... I've had so many pass through that it all gets a bit hazy at times. You take care of yourself my friend, love this Channel.

I've just this last 8 months started to play a telecaster my second, after 20 years of set neck Epiphones, a Harley Benton 62 vintage series, bound custom, I know some may sneer but it's one of the best guitars I've ever had, my playing is improving hugely and to be honest the only real change has been this new telecaster. My budget is tight so I try to get value for money, I've been buying guitars when I can for quite some time and I like to think I'd know a lemon when I see one, it's all about getting in on the fun and playing no matter what level you are, I always enjoy your videos Colin. You never know what's next, arse looping anyone?

G&L's are fantastic. You should check out their G&L ASAT Special. The Jumbo MFD pickups are really versatile and as a P-90 guy, I think you'll really love them.
(ah, I see other commenters have already hipped you to them. Hope you check one out!)
Oh, the other thing that the ASAT Special has that the standard ASAT doesn't is a locking bridge. It's a cool design that, allegedly, improves sustain.

I come out with a very similar opinion. I too was an only gibson or fender guy until recently. I attended a large music festival this year and saw many players playing a brand I have only heard of but never see, D'Angelico. Since, I've searched to play one. Finally found a dealer near me. Went to look, hoping to buy 1 D'Angelico, played a few then walked out with 2, a dc xt and a bob weir Bedford. I'm a fender and gibson guy, just bought 2 non gibsons or fenders. I see G&L the same way as I do D'Angelico to gibson. G&L seems to be a well redesigned fender while keeping lots of that fender history. My eyes have been opened to new brands that aren't gibsons or fenders. I plan on seeking a G&L out to play. Heck, you never know, might be walking away with one or two. He who dies with the most guitars wins! Really enjoyed the review.

@@theguitaristas I know I’ve not been subbed for long so excuse the familiarity but, Mate I totally get that, I was the same! that’s why I got a tobacco burst coz you can see the 3 well matched pieces of mahogany, but it rings like no other guitar I own or have owned, I’ve never liked Wide necks, but their Wide slim is fantastic, The pick ups are these TCi S tings from the Core model and tie in so well with the Body’s ring, it’s uncanny, The build quality and finish put Gibson/Fender to shame and give the custom shop range a good showing! And this is the SE cor-tek delight for less the 500 notes.. Even the birds thing I thought was proper gimmicky coz I thought it was a bird flying up/down the neck, turns out there all different birds and in the flesh are quite well done… not often at 57 ish I need to admit I got shit wrong, because we tend to know what we’re doing and our minds with it’s little biases, truth is it seems I’ve/ we’ve been missing out on something extremely special that happens once in a lifetime!

Fun fact - G&L uses the same pickups in their imports as they do in their U.S built guitars. BTW, ASAT is an acronym for a U.S. anti-satellite missile. Leo was going to name it the Broadcaster, but Gretsch owns that trademark (Broadkaster, specifically), and they let G&L know it.

Hi Colin, what a lovely surprise to see a GSL Tribute. In 2018, I came across a used one for very little. It was the most playable guitar I ever laid my hands on. Ergo, it made me sound better than I was. Can you believe I turned it down because it was a cherry sunburst? I've been regretting it since. Nothing a can of rattle paint would not have remedied. Great guitars whether Indonesian or Fullerton, USA.

Mine does not have the tummy cut, I have a humbucker in the neck position, and I have a truss rod adjustment on a maple neck. Cost is about the same as I paid $500.00 from Sweetwater.
