Yeah.. but it's "long live!" It's short for the phrase "Heika Tennou Banzai!" Or in direct translation: "Currently-Reigning Heaven-King Long-live!" It's like saying "God Bless America" or "God Save the King" it's a national blessing thing. So... It's probably okay. Plus, His Majesty's reaction probably made it so that anyone upset didn't do anything about it. Since He bowed at the person saying it.

This is important because the emperor almost never bows, one important exception being when saluting war heroes. Before WW2 the emperor used to visit the Yasukuni shrine to pay respects to war heroes and Japanese soldiers were well aware of this. They knew that if they died in combat the emperor himself will come to pay respects. 'See you at Yasukuni' was a commonly used phrase to say goodbye among soldiers. However the emperor (since Hirohito) has stopped visiting the shrine allegedly because WW2 war criminals from Tokyo Trial were 'secretly' included in the shrine's 'book of souls'. Now they have a separate ceremony (that you see in the video) outside the shrine.

Seeing all these jokes made about the ww2, it's extremely interesting that everyone seems to be more focused on how the word sounds than its meaning.
The same with symbols. People on the internet seems to think that the world unanimously agrees that the nazi symbol represents the atrocities they committed when in reality, Hitler used it for the sole reason that it looks cool. They don't care if it has a different meaning in other cultures. Everyone just doesn't want see it. They don't want others to use it either. The meaning and origin be damned. And then they act like the people who has no knowledge of the Nazis are the uneducated ones, lol. Not everyone is fed with useless information that has nothing to do with their lives at an early age. Making yourselves the center of everything and not respecting other cultures is ironically what uneducated people would act.
No offense, Jeremy Lengkong. Don't worry, you're not the only idiot in this comment section.

It actually means "Ten Thousand Years of Happiness" although technically it translates as "Ten Thousand Years" and is derived from the same phrase that was saluted to the Emperor of China starting in about the Tang Dynasty around the year 619. It is exclusively used for the Emperor and was used by China, Korea, Vietnam, and Japan. Since only Japan has the only surviving Imperial Family and Emperor of the four nations, it is used sparingly for the Emperor of Japan in modern day.

Probably not, the banzai charge was something that almost always ended up with a very large pile of japanese corpses infront of the trenches. Charging while screaming wildly isnt something that has made much military sense in about 300 years.

@@jimboblordofeskimos Still left people permanently scarred. Imagine reading a book in your trench and suddenly hearing hundreds of men running at you with bayonets and swords fixed. It'd definitely make a few people shit themselves that's for sure.

@@120mmsmoothbore2 that is very true, however if I get the choice between being the guy looking down at the corpse thinking 'well that was bloody terrifying' and being the corpse, id say the guy who wakes up sweating 20 years later is the winner.
