I use a rainbow pencil for a lot of my line drawing for traditional figures drawing. I like how it mixes with my watercolours and it makes it feel less serious. Makes me feel like a child playing with crayons, so it doesn't matter so much if one painting doesn't turn out right.
Well my art professor said that one benefit of underpaintings is how they make all your colors look more cohesive. But if your underpainting is a bunch of different colors, I imagine it would do the opposite - make your painting look unbalanced or "off" because all the cookies are built on different bases
