John Fish. You're such a huge inspiration to me, for years now. Last November, watching one of your videos, I decided to try a 2months long break from social media (including youtube - except useful channels) + television... I made it and instead started learning coding and reading a lot. Since then I've been much more productive and somehow, your videos started this. Next May I'm applying for software engineering and I wouldn't do it nor believe in myself without you being truly helpful. Sorry for being too sentimental but I really think your videos help lots of people 💙 Also sorry if I made some grammar mistakes, I'm from Slovakia so... ✌

I like that idea about consistency. I've been learning English for the past 4 years. I never missed a day since then. Right now English is my major in the Uni, I have a job that requires a decent level of English fluency. I've read and watched so much content that is not available in my native language, I've met so many people, I've done so much. My life has changed. Everything it took was at least 15 minutes a day.

I’ve been learning for fun through TH-cam for 6 of the 15 years of my life. There is just SO much educational content on this. It’s actually absurd. What’s also crazy is how easy it was to learn here. Only a small percentage of the educational videos I’ve seen have been boring, which allows me to just inhale them. Not to mention the TH-cam algorithm that can keep the cycle of learning going for hours a day. The internet is so underrated when it comes to learning and education.
I’m even shocked at times by how much I know. What happens a lot in conversation is that a nerdy topic is brought up, and I’ve got basically talk down to the other person. It’s just all so crazy. I think I need to donate my both my kidneys to youtube as a thank you.

If I had watched this a year ago, I’d probably not have been able to catch the essence of the matter. Actually, I started learning English (it’s my 3rd language) through the internet and omg I’ve learned so much more in several weeks than I do in a year of English taught at school. I’m almost fluent now and I could tell that it’s probably the best decision of my life. Throughout the year, I began considering the idea of studying abroad. Without a strong belief that my English will be consistent enough once high school is over, the motivation would have faded away in a few days. But because I was seeing amazing results of my learning, I persisted. I didn’t have the slightest idea of how it feels to learn for fun. But don’t get me wrong, it’s not something that comes in an instant, it’s all about how dedicated you are. I’m now preparing the TOEFL, my application to UK universities and reading V. Woolf essays. Thank you John, thanks for reminding me that it applies to any other area, how easy it is to just get a book and grow interests and skills :)

I realized a while ago that you can “learn for fun”, but before that I really didn’t do a lot of learning out of school. I think that not a lot of kids care to learn about what they are learning about in school and not a lot of kids enjoy or have an interest in what they are learning about. It really didn’t occur to me at first that you could “learn for fun”. I started just when I would learn new things about whatever I was interested in by just reading about it on the internet. Engineering, science, and programming were a few of my favorite topics to research. I think that learning for fun has really had a impact on me because it allows you to be independent and decide how you want to learn and learn when you want to.

For the past three days, I have been working on a python based project. I just graduated from high school and I was just thinking the same thing you are. When I got certain things to work from reading the documentation it felt good. I realized that learning could and SHOULD be fun. I had a terrible web development/computer science teacher in high school who just cared more about assignments than actual learning. This led me to not caring about learning and caring more about completing assignments (copy and paste ) *cough* *cough*. Anyways, I just started to learn on my own. I hope I become consistent in learning more. Thanks, now I know I'm not the only one.

But last week if got 95% and i'm happy with it
Because if i wasn't working hard this could be 80% or maybe 70%
Now i can get into IT colleague and learn from my misatkes
I learned from my mistake in 9th grade ,
    9th grade i've got 75%
    12th grade 95%
And maybe in colleague i'll reach my goal and got the 98% and that's improvement because of you
So my last wish to student and every one have a goal is to learn from mistakes we made

I think you missed something: motivation. A lot of people struggle outside of a structured environment given how overwhelming the amount of information out there is. Personally, I've self studied a lot of things, learnt to 'learn for fun' and it has helped me approach everything differently but I would've been more productive if somebody had planned it all out for me and told me what to do instead of me having to hunt down information and draw conclusions and comparisons on my own. Otherwise, spot on!

This is so inspiring. I've always been a curious person and although school makes learning exhausting at times, I feel the same way as you. I've always thought it was kind of sad that people learn or shove massive amounts on information into our brains just because we have to do it to get a job or be successful. I find it sad that we can no longer enjoy learning and studying just because there are topics and subjects out there that are so interesting to learn about. It makes me sad that some people in uni are studying things they don't even want to learn just because they feel like they need to study something or their parents pressured them to do it. I honestly hope that one day, people will view learning in the same way that you do. Thanks for the video ♥️♥️

Ever since I've been watching your videos I've been reading a book a week, and I've found that books have so much to offer yet so many draw a blind eye towards it. I've changed my view of the world by enjoying things that I might have never enjoyed a year ago. After reading a physics book from Stephen Hawking I wanted to know more of the outer space as there are so many questions to bear in mind regarding dark energy, dark matter and what is at the end of the singularity of black holes; if there's more to it than just a one-dimensional end. Being a year 10 and comparing myself to the person I was last year, I see that I've changed a lot. I'm more studious and I enjoy studying while I do it which has made me more productive in my time learning, and I'm grateful for that as I'll be in year 11 and 12 and more mature than this year with techniques readied to help me do my best.

isn't it incredibly that there is so much free information? just stand still for a moment and think about it, literally EVERYTHING you want to learn is on the internet in what ever format suits you (blogs, papers, video's, etc.). some of the problems I think were are not using this free information at its fullest is that 1) there is more free entertainment on the internet which is hard to resist, since it is engineered to grab our attention 2) we lack the discipline to consistently study something for a given period every day (why are we lazy?) and 3) as you say, we don't think/are told learning = fun!
I have this side job where I have a lot of breaks between tasks. all my colleagues always drink coffee or look at their phone during these breaks while I take out my journal and read a book. then when I am reading often some of my colleagues will walk up to me and say "oh are you studying for school?" after which I say, "no this is just for me". what happens then is that their face changes to complete surprise/confusion and they don't know what to say next. somehow they can't get it that you would be learning for fun. once you have gotten yourself the learning = fun spirit there is never any time during the day that I don't have anything to do, because there is so much more for me to learn, I can always be doing something!

Hi John, I know this is a video from a while back but I just wanted to say - I really agree with what you said about committing to something everyday like building a project or learning. But the question I keep asking myself lately is, should I take the time to learn about as many of my interests as I can or just focus on ONE thing long-term that I’m most enthusiastic about and build a great project around it. I wondered what you’d say about that. Anyways, loved this video, I hope you’re doing great.

I think instant gratification is what's holding some back. Being able to think long term and understand the benefits to be reaped by consistent small chunks of progress really pays dividends. Though I have a theory that humans are terrible at thinking long term, as historically while we evolved, in terms of survival there was just no need to think long term.
Instead we generally seem to be attracted to attention grabbing shiny objects, like smartphones.
I'm a big proponent of consistency though. Took me far in sports, and it's doing the same with my studies. Wish I'd been able to think this way when I was younger.

John, I have found learning for a job to be extremely disappointing. It's been 35 years since I received my MBA, and not only have I done no better than a permanent, fultime job requiring only a high school diploma, but it's boring routine. I don't know which is more frustrating: to be told I'm overqualified for a better position, or to have excuses thrown at me from moving up. My only pleasure has been learning, but the internet has been helpful in my updating my knowledge of courses I'd taken in high school (especially MIT OCW) and seeking knowledge I can use, such as Microsoft Office and the various computer programs. I am now at the point where I am trying to use what you've advised to advantage, so I can endorse your recommendations.
