For my (technically) second car, I am going for the Cooper S, and I will be sharing it with my mum (she will own the car). I'm 18, live in East Anglia and we're being quoted just over 2 grand for it. I currently own and drive a Yaris T Sport from 2005 and it is a brilliant first car (insurance was expensive without a blackbox tho!) So for anyone looking for a first car here, I do strongly recommend it to those that can pay over 1.5 grand per year (with a blackbox), as they are incredibly fun to drive, handle corners very well (especially on lowering springs) and are super reliable, great on fuel and cheap to maintain. Bought mine at 56k, currently at 68k miles, the throwout bearing was noisy however and the clutch was replaced, this issue is extremely rare and was likely due to neglect. Other than that, I've only had the odd non essential wear and tear issues.
Nice selection of cars. Cant beat the up. Have a mid spec up whuch ive now made more than a high spec one. Nice amounts of factory parts to modify these and make oem+
I drove my mum’s car from 17 to 21 (1991-1994/5), as I didn’t want to own a banger just for the sake of having a car. I bought my first car at 21 which was an £800 1986 Fiesta XR2 in red. My second car came within a year and was a white 1988 Toyota Celica GT! Pretty quick for the time and the added ‘coolness’ of pop up headlights! I was, however, paying £1,380 insurance, Third Party, Fire & Theft! Completely ridiculous money back in 1995!
The price on insurance for some of these is accurate for where i live but the toyota gt86 comes out at £1900... what did you do to make yours £1100? 6:35
@nikodem2167 honestly its an amazing car but if you need to carry more than one person comfortably in it, its a bit of a challenge but it gets good fuel economy and its a blast to drive. You would get lots of looks as well.
My first ever car was a 1.2L 2009 corsa. Wicked first car. Reliable as heck, but my god did it struggle with hills. I get better MPG out of my 2016 290 Cupra with an ECU and TCU tune pushing out 350BHP because I don’t need to redline it going up a hill 😂 still miss my corsa for sentimental first car reasons and I preferred it to my 2018 Renault Clio I had after it
Only up unti recently you could actually get inisured on the Octavia VRS, not sure what happened but only a few months ago I was getting quotes for £8500 At the lowest!
While london makes a difference, the are of london you are in makes and even bigger one. If you live on a council estate with tons of crime it will cost more than a suburb with low crime
I think if you take the insurance element out, and the cars over 7 seconds performance, this is still a great list of great cars for not a lot of money
My 1st car was a Punto S60, total beast. I think it still holds the record for the highest average repair costs per year of any car I've owned, even though it was actually a half decent example... From this list, the GT86 is clearly the best car, beating the porker with its far superior reliability. Still, I'd have the Pug, in that white with the black trim, since I do 😁
I think it's very unhelpful he isnt showing what those stats are. I'm 31 and i have been driving since 2013 and have a few yeara NCB and i don't think i could get these prices for some of them. The porshe, jag and the wrx for aure
It would be great if you could post the stats of the areas you're using and things like years driving and NCB to get these insurance quotes. I have several years NCB and have been driving since 2013 and i don't think i could get most of these at these same prices you're getting. I do live just outside London, but i used to live near newcastle and the prices weren't THAT different for me. Edit: that wrx sti, jag and porshe will never be under 1250 for anyone under 30. I'm curious so i will check some of these using my own details, to confirm what i'm saying.
A car I would have put on this list would probably be an Abarth 124 spider, not the most affordable cars but god its fun, suprisingly no issues for a fiat but it sound sunreal for a 1.4, I have a fiat 124 spider S design which is basically the abarth without the interior, badge or the scorpion exhaust. Not the worst on insurance too
It’s all good with cheap insurance but you’re forgetting about the road tax… I looked at the road tax for a Subaru WRX STI, and it’s around £600 a year
Insurance is crazy nowadays, I am 18 yr old and got a quote of £21560 on a 09 BMW 320 as a second driver and my dad has 13 yrs of no claim and has 27 yr old driving license. That’s more than some people’s yearly wage
The price of the policy should never exceed the value of the car imo. My 08 325 with 30k miles is worth 5k according to my insurer. So are you going to write that car off 4 times a year😂
Same as the Fiesta - every fast Ford has either been stolen or crashed! Last time I got a quote for a Fiesta ST, it was almost double what I was paying for my 981CS at the time. I bought the Pug on this list instead (in that spec!) and that's "only" about 20% more to insure than the porker was. On the other hand, a McLaren would cost me 30% less - expensive cars can be cheap to insure, because people tend to look after them. On the other hand, literally every Fiesta ST I've seen since for about a decade has tried to race me, although none have crashed or been stolen while doing that, thankfully 😄
I got an Audi TT 3.2 for my second car, cost me less than 6k and the insurance is £500 a year cheaper than my first car which was a clio mk2 😅 Albeit the extra in tax took that extra £500 I saved but still a win in my eyes
@bhindeemaster2713 sorry just seen this, I paid £1500 for a year, fully comp and zero no claims and when I got it, I hadn't even had my licence for a year at that point. Compared to the £2000 I was paying for the clio, I'm pretty happy
@cruiseedwards4657 it's not the worst, but I only do about 10k miles a year. On short trips I average 17-22mpg and on motorway journeys and longer trips I get about 28-33mpg. I recently drive 1200 miles from UK to Hungary and most I got was 34mpg. Obviously depends on driving style, it is hard to drive economically because it's so tempting to put your foot down and hear that VR6 growl
Be careful with Clio's. They are great cars to drive, but can suffer from electrical issues, as well as mechanical some not so bad some quite. Make sure major service is carried out before you buy, or is not due for a while as can be expensive. Cambelt+Depasher which is required every 5 years or 75k miles (I think) is an expensive job. And last but not least, engine failure, I had the crankshaft die which took out the entire bottom end, it had scored the piston rings etc and would have required a full engine rebuild. It could have happened due to an oil pickup issue, or not been serviced correctly or at its exact intervals. My specialist reckons it was ran on no oil, started knocking topped it up and sold. So make sure FSH and prove it. If you do want to get one, take it to a Renault specialist who deal with Renaultsport models, as they will know everything as they are a fair bit different to a standard mk3 Clio, wider track, 4 pot brembos and more complex engine with VVT etc... I loved mine but caused me a headache so be careful!

The lift-off oversteer can be just as lethal too 🤔 I was discussing this with someone yesterday - I feel like the driving test should include a sim piece, make people prove they really understand the limits of their car.
