I'm 76 years old now, and Folsom prison blues was one of the first songs I learned to play,at 13 years of age, along with Mother Maybelle Carter's wildwood flower, and still play those great songs today, !!!
I knew Johnny Cash had two supporting musicians but I never knew who they were. After seeing this video on Luther Perkins I now know more about one of them and came to find out what a remarkable individual he was. I hope you're resting in peace, Mr. Perkins.
When you consider the fact that he trailblazed a new guitar sound that helped make one of the most famous entertainers in American history famous….and then you consider that he played on so many million selling records that are still very relevant even 65 years later….I think he should be in the country music hall of fame. I have thought this for several years now.
I'm 21 years old Luther has been my number one Guitar hero since I was young very young and I first heard Johnny Cash Luther is still my number one guitar influence I even use flatwounds I use my own custom set the 7/38 with an 18 wound third this is the gauge set I've been using for years on my homemade electric guitar that was built by me and my grandfather from scratch
Wooten was a Cash disciple. He got on stage and played all of Cash's music, that is how he got the job. No, he wasn't Luther, but the played the music like he did. The round remained essentially the same.
Luther Perkins is my hero,I play guitar just because of his playing and style to me is the greatest guitar player that's ever lived,I'm sixty five and I was around six or seven years old when I heard Johnny Cash and his great guitar player,Any one who knows me will tell you Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two and the Tennessee three was when I went Johnny Cash crazy.
Same here from North Carolina Luther has been my number one Guitar hero since I was very very young I'm 21 now I use my own custom set of Thomastik flatwounds 7/38 I customize myself it has a 18 Guage flatwound wound 3rd
Listen to what he said, that he was “in the Air Force but not at the same time nor the same place as was Johnny”. I wish people who put down Southerners as being just old hillbilly’s with over-simplified ways of speaking would take note. That’s some very good English, which is seldom heard anywhere in the US anymore.
I agree with you 100%. And nobody can make a proper sentence either. I have seen someone that had a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from The University of Mississippi and was teaching school who could not construct a sentence.
He created his own style back then and was considered one of the best but in today's world.... Some advanced beginners and the average intermediate players can do the same thing he was doing back then.
RIP Luther. Without you there wouldn't have been a Johnny Cash. RIP also Tommy Cash.

I think it’s safe to say his guitar style is one of the most iconic sounds in country music. In fact, it might be the most iconic sound.
Growing up in the 60s, I wore out several needles on my record player trying to learn how to achieve Luther‘s sound on a guitar.
What a great American soul! Thank you Luther! Thanks for posting this!
What would country music have been without Luther? Well done film! He is my favorite guitar player, and the inspiration for most of the music I make.
A huge footnote in musical history.
Luther Perkins
❤

Great interview love it thank for sharing this video missing all of them 😢
Luther created a style
You know, with Luther's guitar style they really didn't need a drummer. He played a terrific and driving rhythm guitar as well.
One of America's greats. Love his version of Tennessee Flattop Box. Masterpiece
the Luther years were the best years for Johnny ,after Luthers death it wasn;t the same. Bob Wooten is O.K. but he was now Luther.
Yep. He was now Luther.
@guitarman396😂
Same I prefer the early years of Johnny Cash myself Luther was and will always be the best

RIP grandpa. I wish I could have met you 💔🕊️
All three came together and became music icons.

There have been many fine guitar players in country music but Luther is king IMO.

Had me sobbing for a few minutes. Powerful stuff. Real.
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also RIP to luther Perkins also today is my younger brother birthday ❤😊
I learned to play the guitar listening to Luther.
2:23 that sweet Fender reverb
Everybody else was looking for it, Luther found it!
Back in 1969 I got to ride with Johnny Cash and Luther from Virginia, MN to Eveleth, MN. My dad was the cab driver.
Luther died in 1968 .
Any memories from that day?

Great singing by Lew Dewitt at the end too RIP!
He is so good, people copy Luther's mistakes.

If I was asked who are the best guitar players I have ever heard, I'd say Luther Perkins, Bo Ramsey, and Chuck Prophet. And I'd be asked "who ???"
ROY LANHAM next. PHIL BAUGH. Guitarists r like machinegunners. Take JOE MAPHIS ...
