  • I don't know the details of the train line but I know that this is a GP38 with a sixteen cylinder diesel with two superchargers. It's close too forty degrees F.

Almost forgot, we're still using 567C-powered GP9's as yard switchers. Those 567's sound great all wound up.

That looks like one of Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad's locomotives. A lot of their equipment is ex-Arkansas & Missouri, which you can see painted over on the side of this locomotive.

This is a GP38, which has the 16-645E roots-blown engine in it. No GP38's were built with the 567 engine. The 645 engine was available with roots blowers or a turbocharger, as was the 567. (the GP30 and GP35 had turbocharged 645's.) EMD, rather than GE, built the F7A, which had the 16-567B roots-blown engine.

Okay. Looking into it I find that AGC and CORP are both part of the same RailAmerica 'family'. That makes sense. What threw me was most of CORP's locomotives are numbered in the 38XX series as well.

Yeah, I work with these engines too, I'm an engineer with CN. Don't know them as intimately as a mechanic, just enough to make them work.
Good engines, possibly the best EMD made.

16cyl 645e roots blown... i work on these baby's time to time. worked as a diesel mechanic and part time engineer from 1989-1999 im not currently working with this stuff anymore i now am involved in restoration and repair at a local rail museum and sometimes amtrak will call me since i am a standby diesel/electrical technician. economy sucks now though for local work. i like working with trains better

No you did not. The closest you have ever been to a train is at a rail crossing. Even then you fell off your bicycle when you were looking backwards at the clothes you dropped while running from a gang that chased you for wearing the wrong colors.

@dieselgaint the 645's 2000 hp and under are supercharged(roots blown), over 2000 hp they're turbocharged.

the C&NW got some N&W c630 alcos, Iset up on the load box, after 5sec in 8 notch the main gen flashed and blew all the outside covers off, apparently the main generators were full of coal dust, but I survived untill the UP took over

EMD Made the F7 and it had the 16cyl 567b this engine Actually is a 16cyl 645 sorry for the typo but some gp38's had the 16cyl 567

In reality there are few if any actual 567’s left in operation. EMD stopped producing the 567 power packs (liner, piston and con rod Assembly) several decades ago. They were superseded by the 645 type. 645E if I recall correctly. The blocks accept the 645 power packs. The only real way to identify an old 567 block is it has rectangular air box inspection covers. The 645 block and 710 block both have round covers.
