I listen to everyone's ideas. I found I learn a lot more than way. I am 72 years old and the older I get the more I find out how little I know. Oh, to be 16 years old again when I knew everything. Stubborn people just refuse to try new ideas but it is their lost.

Just coming back here after a few years to note that this video made the rounds of the brass instrument repair industry and revolutionized how many of us pull stuck slides. Penetrating oil is okay, but the candle trick is far superior. And when you are dealing with soft solder joints and thin brass, less effort is more.

Hey you-tubers... this actually works! I had some rusted bolts that I could not break free with hundreds of pounds of force, but a lighter and candle wax made them bolts come out like butter. Simply awesome!!

Man you're a life saver. I'm installing a lift kit on my XJ and was about to give up on removing my lower control arms, then saw your video. I crushed some wax around the bolt and the rusted out nut and put a lighter to both sides. Came off with my impact wrench immediately. Thanks again!

This works as demonstrated in the video. I just finished removing a steel alloy head bolt "frozen" in an aluminum alloy block. This boat motor is 49 years old. Up to this point I had already removed the cylinder head bolts except for 2. One stuck in each head in the same area on each side of the exhaust manifold. Using a Dremel, I cut the hex head off the bolt and removed the port side cylinder head so I could get to the beginning of the thread. Even with a light breeze outside, I was able to do it after 5 attempts. The guy in the vid did a great job explaining it and referenced another TH-cam vid that used a torch. I thanked that poster as well. The lighter and what was left of a 2" candle did the trick. I did start with PB Blaster and I was able to at least move it a little, BUT it would have rung off and/or damaged the threads in the block if I had forced it. I'm working on the starboard side now. Thanks Angell Kustoms!

I am sooooOoo glad you had this video up, you saved my butt. I had a couple of very small bolts break off in the aluminum differential of my lawn tractor. They hold the brake caliper on. I had to use a torch instead of a lighter, but the basic concept worked. I have already spent around $50 and two days on this. This worked in about a half hour. Many thanks!

I remembered this from 5 years ago, never forgot the concept, but not the way he has shown this.
Found this link again in my Jeep file researching the torque numbers to replace my front breaks.
I know I will run into this as I remove the old routers etc and hubs, possible the lugs.
Reading the remarks, I may be looking to do this with earnest, but now have a new tool in my tool box.

  • @everettballenger7880

It absolutely works! I have a 4 wheel salt water boat trailer. Last year
a had to destroy the lugs and 2 wheels trying to get the old nuts off. I
was about to do the same to the other 2 wheels when I thought I
checkout TH-cam. And low and behold I saw the candle trick. Do they
just fall off - no, you still have to work at them. But they do move.
Some of the nuts were that rusty and corroded, that I could actually
hammer a socket a size smaller on. You saved me a bunch of money this
    time - thanks!

I once got into a position were I was also unable to get a lug nut to release. I was able to use a lighter like this man did but did not have the candle. Instead I had a small hammer which I was able to tap on the nut as it was being heated and it released with out me twisting it off. It saved the day and a lot of down time.

Don't know if that really works, but DO NOT use torque wrench to open nuts! Opening with torque wrench is going to broke the wrench calibration, so after misusing the wrench you can't trust its accuracy anymore...

Two people may believe it's due to unequal heating, but do it without the candle and you'll oh so quickly see the "secret ingredient" as being the candle wax being drawn down the threads.
Unequal heat (smiley, verging on laughing, face).
Side note: crayons (with "unequal" heat) work as well ...

Wow, I used this today and it worked great. I removed a stuck, rusted clutch slave cylinder which was made of iron that fits tightly in a cylindrical hole in the aluminum bell housing. Frozen tight due to rust over decades. In an Alfa Romeo, these are notoriously hard to remove. Did not budge after many uses of penetrating oil. But the Wax worked! I heated it with a propane torch on low flame instead of a lighter. Thanks for the information on this method. Could hardly believe it when I put the wrench on it to twist it and it actually moved!

  • @toppledgod

It works similar to penetrating spray. Penetrating spray injects alcohol into the gaps, then as the alcohol evaporates it draws the oil into the void. Wax expands massively when it is melted allowing it to penetrate, then as it cools it contracts drawing more wax into the joint.

Congrats on almost a million views!
Had to do this today with my baby sisters car. It worked on almost all 4 of the lugnuts! I was shocked! It was that male fixer-up nirvana when you know it’s a long shot and it works!!
A few things.. be sure to prime the candle a little, just like if you were soldering. I forget the word, but I’m trying think of when you solder your tip on a soldering iron. I guess that’s probably just how you’d say it. This helps the wax melt.
Also, couple problems I encountered. I had tried the hammer trick and one lugnut got a bit malformed, and it is now stuck in my wrench. That’s my fault. Otherwise it would’ve worked great!
My wrench is also a bit strained, I can see almost like it’s starting to pressure crack. The wax does a lot, but it doesn’t turn the lugnut for you obviously, so somethings might get damaged.
Finally, on my third nut, I ended up cracking the screw and I’ll have to drill that out. I blame that more on the position of the nut and the shape of my candle. There was just no getting it in there the way i needed.
Also, this was done outside in the autumn wind on a gravel driveway. If I had a shop, this technique works perfectly fine.
Sorry that I don’t know any of the lingo, I didn’t have a dad to show me any of this and I never took a shop class.
    Thanks for the pro tip!!

Interesting. He's right. BTW, you probably saw that the paraffin wax had run only into the first bit of the thread, not all the way through. Like with glued or riveted or welded lap joints, almost all of the "stiction" happens at the ends, not evenly throughout the length. If a nut is jammed, it is really "jammed" only at the interface where it meets and presses against the component.

  • @markpowders6012

People saying that wax won't work rah rah. That's like saying thick lubricant that comes in a jar but gets hard when oxygenated won't work. Wax is a similar fluid. This seems to be true cause the wax is flowing down the thread then when it hardens it expands making it easier to remove the nut.

    • @jonlem88
      @jonlem88 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Wax does not expand when it hardens, that is a somewhat unique property of water. Almost everything else contracts when solidified: The default is for things to shrink when they freeze. This is because, normally, if you make something hotter, it vibrates more. IceWhen it vibrates more, it tends to take up more space, so it tends to expand.
Ice is very unusual that, as it gets colder, although the particles are vibrating less, it expands.
The reason for that is due to the strange shape of water. If you’ve ever seen the picture of a water molecule, it looks like a Mickey Mouse head with an oxygen molecule where Mickey Mouse’s face is, and then two hydrogen atoms where his ears are.

the melting wax is drawn into the hot threads by capillarity action and then loosens or lubricates the threads - also I have never done this myself but I believe it does not matter how you heat the bolt from all sides etc as long as it is hot enough to melt the wax and draw it into the thread - same principle behind soldering or solder welding tightly fitting copper joints - good video thanks

heat alone doesn't always work, and there's no contamination which gets left in the system

Doug Gyver , just a quick question, how is the crayon contaminating the brake fluid by heating up the bleeder? Is the brake paddle all the way done and when bleeder is lose, someone lets go of brake paddle. Just asking

This was incredible to watch!!! A+ video, I'm going to try this on normal very tight lugs, just to see how easy it is over my arm strength.

I recommend PB Blaster. Better than Liquid Wrench or WD40. Does the sam, but can be used where flame is dangerous.
Spray it on the exposed thread and it will work all the way through the nut in an hour or two. Then use a 6 point socket.
But not a fast as heating the nut with a gas welding torch.
btw, Unless you want to drill through the cap, the only one of these that works well on an over torqued acorn nut is the torch.

bees wax has been used for years in the old school just heat and smear on the bees wax also works good on grinding wheels on aluminum to keep from loading up

Do you have to make sure to get all the wax off before you tighten them back up?

    Great method man!
Do you think i could use this method with a lighter and some drops of lubricant,
to loosen the glow plugs on a diesel engine?

Old time pipefitters have been using a torch and beeswax for decades. Melt the beeswax in a small paper cup of paper straws for storage.

What happens when you put the nuts back? Will they stay tight? The wax will be still there and will make it go loose later when the temperature increases due to rotating wheels?

    I am praying this works.
    I am at a friend's home, I have a flat tire. I don't have money for a tire.
I called roadside assistance through my insurance. They arrived, they can’t Loosen the lugnuts on one tire.
I can call my roadside assistance for a tow as long as it's in a 15 mile radius.
So my friend and I are checking out the places within a 15 mile radius.
The 1st inquiry tells me, tow the car there. If they can't Loosen the lugnuts I will have to have the car towed someplace else. Well, in that case, if they can't get the lugnuts loosened I will be responsible to pay for another towing and this time around my roadside assistance won't pay. I simply don't have the money to pay for a towing.
So, my friend and I go to another tire shop to gain information.
OMG, what a terrifying scenario they gave me.
Mind you I have about $100 in the bank for the month. I can't afford anything and survive the rest of the month.
So this next place tells me. They charge $120 per hour. It could take them 30 minutes to remove the lugnuts or it could take 4 to 5 hours just to remove the lugnuts.
According to the last tire shop. $120 per hour. 4 hours work on just removing lugnuts would cost $480 plus tax.
Then they said it would cost for the tire removal, the fixing of the tire and possibly a new tire.
This was all without looking at the tire.
The sales manager expressed how much it cost for maintaining their building and business; electricity, taxes etc. & how they are not the cheapest but not the most expensive place around.
I will point out, my friend is a man. When we initially approached the manager to inquire he made the assumption my male friend what there to do business, when he was informed I the female was the one doing business and it was my vehicle I truly got the impression he felt he could take advantage of me.
I am thinking a tire removal, even with stuck lugnuts and a potential tire would cost me close to or way over $800 if I did business with this tire shop. So the answer is that I don't have that kind of money. While speaking with this manager at the 2nd tire shop he was leaning toward spending at least 6 hours on my tire. Doing the math in my head as this manager is tossing the cost a me is getting very pricey.
I am praying this candle and lighter thing works.
    Thank you for this video.
