A idea for a new short series for the future maybe is buy a a 1994 mazda 323 glx which is the sedan awd put in the 1.8 from the mazda gtx and race it against the evo ,the subie, I always wondered how it would compare to them , the 323 glx and 323 gtx came out in around the same time as evo and subies but was not paid much attention to because the evo and subie where very popular, the 323 gtx,glx are fun cars to drive as a fellow owner of one , parts for it are easily found because the 1994 mazda 323,familia , sedan, etude 160e up to the 2005 and 2006 used the same chassis , engine , suspension with some light changes ,love your shows

I love how Marty and Moog are able to buy cars that have been neglected and set-up poorly and once they are ready to get rid of it, it's the best version that the car has ever been. Examples are the Evo9, MR2, GTiR, 2WISTD, 180SX and this Exige

Depends how you define the "best". The "best" cars to them are probably the ones that have nostalgia tied to them. They'd never sell the mini, the fairlady or super gramps and all those cars wouldn't be alot of people top 10 "best" cars. The lotus would be in someones top 10 "best" cars, but that someone just isn't Moog.

I totally get the decision to part with the lotus, you've scratched that itch. I found this episode stressful to watch - you can hear Moog, he keeps calling it "track needs respect", "car needs respect", "car is light at speed" etc etc. It reminds me of some of the drives I had in a modified S2000 I owned (obviously nowhere near the performance of the exige) it was at its best on track driven hard, there was a real sense of being at one with the car when you were really "on it" bit equally I found driving it hard a double edged sword it was stressful - the car was twitchy (I described driving as "like trying to have sex with a tiger on wet rocks", not my phrase I stole that from a motoring journo somewhere) but it was adrenalin fueled.
Ultimately for me the stressful side won out - I got to the point where I couldn't enjoy driving it on the limit - maybe it's a personal thing, I'm just not cut out for being a legendary wheelman whereas other people love being on the edge and it works or them - or they just have more skill than I did and therefore it's less stressful, dunno. But I got to the point where I was ready to sell - pleased I'd had some fun and had ticked off an experience but also pleased I got out having sold the car before stacking it - that's probably over reaction on my part but that's how it felt at the time.
I bought a 911 after that but I never returned to the track. These days Im old, have kids and run a legacy TBSTI wagon, partly inspired by MCM, which is a fun daily for not much money - but again I can't see me feeling I want to track it.
The lotus was great for content I enjoyed watching the journey but I get why it's going.
Keep up the good work guys !

People like myself will happily drive the car you're afraid of to its absolute limit. Check out the footage of me driving on the Falcon Autosport TH-cam channel for examples.

    • @imnota
      @imnota 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's why most people prefer cars like e36's, schassis, mx5/miatas, ... While being way slower on track they're cars you could drive to the limit with one hand, even when they're out of control, you're still in control, it's quite difficult to explain but I'm sure people that have driven sketchy cars will understand.

This is what I love about MCM. You're curious. You appreciate vehicles for what they are. Some are fast, slow, ugly, beautiful, a little of each.. and you find purpose in them and make it personal.
The Lotus was a perfect car for you (temporarily)- it remained unique while giving you a supercar nibble that everyone's / majority of's tastebuds are curious about. You praise it for what it is- but you are okay with parting with "perfection" because that perfection is ultimately for someone else. You just needed a brief moment to dabble in it to understand the appeal.
Without dipping your toes into Lotus, that childhood dream of experiencing Bathurst firsthand would not have happened as quickly..
Your appreciation doesn't blind you, it deepens your senses within yourself and the car. You know it's a beautiful thing, but your addiction isn't quite there so you selflesly want to pass the build along to some other enthusiast to aid in fulfilling their dream- without judgement or negativity..
Like you- I feel like I should immerse myself into some of the "finer" things.. but I'm always drawn back to 90/00's Japanese nuggets (but in USDM guise..)
Anyways, I appreciate you both immensely. (Missoula, Montana, USA)

Initially I was a bit disappointed that he was selling it, but the more I think about it, it's not a good fit for him. I love track driving and I want the sharpest tool I can get for it, but not everybody is at home on the track and there is a huge difference between what makes a car a good track car and what makes a car a good road car. A good road car can still be fun on track too, and I think those types of cars probably suit the way he enjoys cars more than the razor sharp track tool that is the lotus....which is basically what he'd said if I was paying attention.

I would struggle to rationalize getting rid of such a spectacular car, but I'm also a much smaller dude so getting in and out of a car that compact isn't a struggle for me like it is for the two of you with your enviable height. Hopefully you'll get a chance to own more Lotus cars in the future. They're really something special.

@@petelattimer6808 It's actually EXTREMELY important in a mid engine car. The uneven weight shift (weight moving forward away from the rear tyres) from an un-matched shift can literally put it into a wall if done at the wrong time.
You must Rev Match to maintain balance and traction, otherwise you are asking for trouble.
The only thing that saved Moog was his extremely slow corner entry speed.
If he was anywhere near the limit of traction doing that, I doubt there would be a MCM show anymore.

Yep, too good for him, quite literally the car challenged him, he needed to elevate his skills to drive it properly. I guess he did overcome his fear at least a bit, but not 100% and so he parted ways with the Exige. Still a nice little bend in the journey of MCM, we got a glimpse of the epicness of these cars, a bit of the repair/mods that go with them. Kudos to MCM!

    • @siejaiz

Lotus isn't really that expensive for what it is, by the time you buy a 90's JDM and put some money modifying it or fixing it up, you could get get a fairly low mileage Elise. Then if you decide it's not for you, you can sell it for the same price you bought it for... 15 year old Elises are selling for 3/4 or better of original MSRP in the US.
