      “Increases sales by making multiplatform”.
More like HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MULTIPLATFORM.
Resident Evil OG trilogy saw most of its sales on PlayStation actually. But later they tied exclusivity with Nintendo. But that backfired cause RE4 and Remake 1 failed at first until they were multiplatform.
The last lesson of Capcom being a bad company was selling out to appease the west. With DMC Devil May Cry killing Dante and Re6 sucking by being a western appeasing disaster.
Re7 and going back to creativity was the spark that lead to modern Capcom love.

I've worked in the entertainment industry for over 16 years. The ONLY time I've seen anything like we're seeing now is during the 2008 recession. Politicians INSIST on not calling our current economic situation a recession but with the closing of Banks that would lend money to entertainment companies, weak dollar, rising development costs and general uncertainty around personal finances, the FIRST thing that takes a hit is the entertainment industry.
The industry however does have to not rely on bloated budgets and infinite growth to fuel their decisions so, there has to be a change in strategy as well

I don't think it was ever about sales numbers. I think the console benefits from the exclusivity by selling more consoles and the dev or publishers maybe receives some kinds of kickbacks. I have said this time and time again but the Fanboys always want to argue with me. If a game cost 95 million to make it doesn't break even unless it sells 5 million copies, and you can't simply multiply the cost of the game versus how many copies sold. There's advertising, licensing fees, taxes, retail fees unless it's all digital only, there's lots of expenses.

The thing about the initial launch window is that Final Fantasy is the Flagship franchise for Square. Once those games are out, they become demystified so down the line when they launch for PC and other platforms, people know what to expect and are either not buying or going to buy. Those FOMO sales get lapped up by games such as Like a Dragon and Shin Megami Tensei games. Square isn't the only one in town when it comes to big RPG and they need to realize what other companies are doing.
Its not the end all be all but it certainly is a step in the right decision to have access to more consumers with your flagship titles.

This "go big or go home" mentality started in the PS3 era. Arguably it's what saved the PS3. But a lot has changed. These huge budget games, much like with film, were never sustainable. You need a huge audience just to break even, and that inevitably means watering down the game for mass appeal. It's gotten to the point where every AAA game feels the same. To put it into perspective, the estimated development cost for BOTW was $40-$60 million. Which is a lot for a Nintendo game. FFVII Rebirth is estimated to have cost SE three to four times that. Which sold more in the same time frame?

The more games come to PC, especially if they're Linux/Steam Deck friendly, the better. I'm just done keeping 2-3 separate boxes under the TV to play the various different games I want to play. Being able to play thru Final Fantasy 7 Intergrade, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc. on my Steam Deck has been awesome. Sony has been releasing some absolute bangers on PC so I'm more than happy to give them my money for a game that I can keep basically forever and replay on whatever new PC I happen to have at the time.

I miss Squaresoft games. Enix hasn't produced one that I've kept on my shelf. I have a ton of older jrpgs but nothing newer than ff9. They really need to look back on how they put games out back to back in the same year, year after year. Smaller budgets, more games, some won't be classics but also won't be a financial blackhole.

I do wonder how this will affect the handheld market. I feel like game devs could develop beautiful games for handhelds that cost less to produce and cost less for the consumers to purchase. Like even back when I had a GBA, a GBC, and a DS, I was buying more games than I am now with regular standard consoles. I was even buying more games with the PSP and PSVITA than I am now. A lot of us even switched to PC because there's more access on PC to all the old games and the new games. It's like console exclusivity has switched from being intended for certain audiences to intended to sell consoles. I think the world needs handhelds and less bulky standard consoles to save the market or just switch to no exclusives and focus on PC sale for the big titles and you can have indie small-cost games on handhelds.

    They had to adjust it.
I heard when Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launched some higher ups were dissapointed.
Why is our game only selling half as much as Final Fantasy 7 Remake did?
It's simple math. Remake launched on the PS4. A system which at the time had an installbase of 100million. Rebirth launched on the PS5 which had around 50 million systems sold.
The game selling half as much makes perfect sense. You cannot be suprised by that.
Going multiplattform is the best choice for them. Launching games exclusive to PS5 or XBox Series makes no sense unless Sony and Microsoft pay for like 75% of development cost.
I'm sure they get support but not that much I'm afraid.

Thank you for making sense. At the time, Series X/S were new, there was still a lot of hype about the new consoles, and the economy was better. All these game companies are laser focused on the gaming industry, as they should be, but the slump in gaming sales is not exclusive to gaming, at all. All of retail is down. Car sales are down, motorcycle sales are down, high-end audio is down....all retail for luxury items is down because the economies in the world are suffering. For companies to try this and that to increase game sales right now, it's just not going to work; people simply do not have the expendable income that we had 5 years ago. I'm sure Nintendo is being very careful about the new console release. Nothing is selling right now and the problem isn't as much with gaming as it is a reflection of the state of the economies of the world. Everything is down.

This isn’t a crash, it’s a response and Square has been laying this foundation for months. They have new leadership, have promoted key management, reorganized their studios/business units, and focused their development on producing high quality titles - not cancelling your Final Fantasy’s of the world, but hopefully green lighting fewer Valkyrie Elysiums or even Forspokens which were given a lot of latitude with little oversight or direction across a formerly very fractured and siloed organization. Unlike other devs that are folding or panicking or turtling, SE is at least trying to respond to not only the current economic climate but the calls for them to improve their gaming output and let creativity and fun be at the forefront of their efforts. Going multiplat and focusing on making better games is what I would have hoped to see from them

Big companies like SE should start putting value on small games and what can be made from them than just the heavy hitters.

I think the glory days of exclusives are well and truly gone to be deemed profitable by any single video game publisher. I still own my original December 1998 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly and Sony was cleaning house in the video game industry with the PSOne. I kept it for the article on Zelda: Ocarina of Time as I only had the N64, and advertisements for PlayStation games are peppered throughout the magazine as there was a massive flow of titles being developed for Sony's first console compared to the N64. Square had long left Nintendo and everyone knew that every game that Square made was going to be bound exclusively for PlayStation and boy was Square, known as Squaresoft at the time, on fire. Page 184 alone lists 7 titles from the company coming out. I know games take a much longer amount of time to develop and are FAR more expensive, but no matter what it isn't profitable for 3rd party developers to keep them locked to a single platform. Nintendo and Rare are really what kept the N64 alive, but Sony left Nintendo firmly in second place throughout that entire console war when Square and many other developers jumped ship from Nintendo to produce titles exclusively for PSOne. When FFVII released only on PlayStation, the whole gaming landscape changed, even leaving Sega's Saturn in the dust. Considering the massive install base of the PSOne, at the time exclusivity deals made sense. Now not so much.

So no one’s going to bring up that part 3 of the FF7 remake project will likely be a PlayStation exclusive?

I don’t think us PS5 owners are going to be annoyed. Means Square can continue making good games and more people enjoy them. No one looses here.

Great video & I agree, but I think the exact opposite of you when it comes to one thing. Remake had much more padding than Rebirth. Rebirth's content is optional. When it comes to mandatory story, Remake has waaaaay more padding. Rebirth was great!

What a lot of people seem to overlook is literally how long these AAA games take to create and make playable! These games are taking TENS of MILLIONS of dollars and many many years to make! But that’s what makes it hard as a consumer because we want the next best thing now!

I’m the Xbox series x weirdo. That doesn’t have gamepass (i used to until Microsoft stopped giving physical options also) i have been searching for and buying some awesome and fun 3rd party physical series x games. I actually want something to show for my money and it can’t be taken away from me tomorrow or whenever publishers feel like it. I understand the convenience of gamepass and i would still use it for the smaller games and as a rental service for the bigger games that are released if they would offer physical pre-orders for the heavy hitters.
