And that kid was old enough(in the 90s-00s) to left alone. Plus I don't understand why they didn't get insurance money. And the children would have gotten ssi for the mother dying.
They could've made it slightly more believable by saying she was a friend of the mother's and was staying with them to help them out while they were still grieving and adjusting to the mom not being there. Certainly would've made more sense than them having a live-in nanny for a teenager and a kid who looks about 10 in a tiny apartment. Maybe even have her just be their next-door neighbor.

The Hammer loved a good scare. And Jackle has always been my favorite ghost. But honestly my fave is that the torso is played by a Paralympian athlete because he would know how to hold himself properly without lower limbs.

This is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. The story "bones" was great. I loved the indepth history of the ghosts and even the family dynamic was cool. And I absolutely LOVED Matt Lillard. Perfect amount of serious and comic relief. But ultimately the film making was a little cringe.
I always laughed at even as a child when the sister washes her face and there’s the cut up lady 😂 this movie TERRIFIED me as a child me and my sister would watch it and cuddle up together bc SCARY and then we rewatched it and we were like oh this is bad… hahahaha also I love that they’re super poor in a large-ish place and have a live in nanny… hm okay
Matt Lillard was giving his absolute all in this film when everyone else was phoning it in like they were in it for the paycheck and Lillard is on the floor screaming and slobbering going for the Oscar win
This movie is even messier then I remember it being from when I used to love it in middle school, but I always really liked the ghosts designs and lore. Even revisiting it with this video, some of those ghosts designs are pretty creepy. Also the second you brought up Elizabeth Shannon’s characters bizarre obsession with bathrooms it brought me immediately back to how stupid and weird that was
The ghost backstories are just as good as the actual movie, which is a bit of an insult to the movie but a big compliment to that DVD featurette i overwatched as a kid
I introduced this to my brother 2 weeks ago as we love awful horror movies that are good and it was amazing to see a fresh perspective on it The dad feels more like he and Shannon should be dating it's fucking weird Matthew clearly did this as a favour as he's sooooo much better at acting than he is in this he clearly was just fucking done The nanny is just there er because??? Honestly such a great bad movie Hate it 💚💜
The book of Ghosts too. They clearly didn't have the art departments talk to each other as the Ghosts look nothing like there "inspiration". Sound was awful and the music coupled with the flashing is headache inducing. This movie is painful to watch but I've seen it like 10 times now LMFAO
I had a wee bit of a crush on Matthew Lillard. I just love the characters he plays, even Stu. Now my 13 year old loves him as well. Girl has good taste.
This movie and Ghost Ship are still two of my favorite horror flicks ever. They scared the hell outta me (Emily Browning as the ghost girl in Ghost Ship was creepy af back then lol) and it was a challenge to watch it whenever it played on SciFi channel's Scariest Night on Television but i watched them every time i could. I also miss that era of SciFi...
18:52 The 3-D effects in the 1960 movie were, of course, the idea of producer/director William Castle. Much of Castle's films were well known for their in-theatre sound, visual and sensation gimmicks, some that Castle explained to the audience in his on-camera introductions.
It's always so weird to me that when they're freaking out trying to find Bobby, his dad keeps referring to him as "the kid" instead of like "my son" or Bobby. You could argue he's doing it to distance himself from the situation emotionally, but it just comes off really cold like hes so irritated, it doesnt even sound like he's talking about his own son😂
I just literally went on TH-cam to see if you posted a video, and not a minute after I click this pops up. The universe is actually working in my favor today! Yay Nick video!💚😁
OMG! I remember trying to copy the story of 13 ghost in 5th grade. I forget how many ghost a wrote down before giving up and concluding the story. Too many ghost for little 5th grade me.
I COMPLETELY understand the sister being ecstatic about having her own bathroom. I’ve always had to share a bathroom with someone and it’s awful. If I found out I would get to have my own bathroom, I would be ecstatic too! I’d be so happy I’d cry 😅
Loved this movie, Loved the idea of bringing back Castle's weird gimmicky films - you might want to check out "Matinee" which tells a fictionalized, romanticized version of Castle's career. I didn't know about that ghost lore on the DVD and it resolves my biggest issue with the film - wanting more lore and more visibility for all those ghosts!
This was super scary when I was a kid. Especially with some of the really good practical effects. But omg the rewatch reveals just how incoherent and bloodless it is. I do still like the idea of the black zodiac and having the ghosts embody each thing
The House on Haunted Hill remake has the same energy as this one to me and look exactly the same. The sound and color palattes are so similar to me, i always got them confused
This is a movie that should have been a TV show for SURE. They had amazing concept art, a complete grimoire of stories for every ghost, and squandered all of it. Prime example of a movie where the most interesting part is the behind-the-scenes work.
I always got the vibe that, while some of the ghosts were aggressive (like the Jackal), others were more "keep your distance and I'll leave you alone." The ones who were more victims seemed to be less inclined to go after people (like the Dire Mother and the Child mostly seemed to just want to be left alone). This movie is definitely camp, but I always liked the ghosts' backstories and designs. Side note, pretty sure you were lumping The Hammer and The Juggernaut together and calling them both The Juggernaut.
I LOVE IT when you do horror movies, it’s my favorite genre for you to dig into! Tbh I have nostalgia glasses on when it comes to this film. I saw it first when I was 12 and loved it, so I don’t think I’d be capable of completely objectively disliking it because of that. Everything you say is still totally spot on, but I still can’t help but enjoy it despite that.
I don't know about anyone else but the daughter wanting her own bathroom was the most relatable thing for me. As someone who has always had to share a bathroom with at least 4 people. A private bathroom is a personal house goal of mine.
I watched this when I was pretty young, I normally got nightmares from scary movies. This one was different. I remember just being enthralled with the whole story to the point that the fake looking ghosts and scenes that didn't make sense-I do remember noticing all of it-didnt bother me because I wanted to learn more about the many stories leading up to the movie.
This movie fucked with me so bad when I was little. The girl with the box around her head and the guy with the railroad nails in his head HAUNTED my dreams for weeks.
I was OBSESSED with this movie as a child (okay still am low key) I remember I had it on a double feature dvd with the House Of Wax remake. This is gonna be so good, thank you Nick!
NICK. You just solved a 20 year mystery w/ this video. For YEARS, I remembered awful scenes from this movie, but had no clue what the movie was or who was in it. I had watched it as a kid w/ my dad while we were living in China for his job. There were a lot of crappy movies on the English tv channel in 2003. Thank you for putting the ghost of my mild childhood trauma to rest.
I’m an older Millennial, so I was in college when this came out. I’m so glad my friends and I watched it on DVD because we were howling at the makeup and how cheesy some of the effects were. I distinctly remember rewinding that part where the layer gets cut in half multiple times and just laughing until we cried.
Thank you Nick! As always...well done. I always laugh so hard at your intelligent commentary. Baby, you’re a firework! Oh god, happy Friday...take good care! Angie from the Bay Area.
Nick, im truly sorry your education and professional experience in the film industry ruins so many things for you. Unlike me, a flop, who thought the high school drama kids interpretative dance conveying "individuality" was the height of symbolism. Anyway what I'm trying to say is this movie is straight fire, I won't hear a bad word against it.
As a horror movie fan I really appreciate Nick for covering horror films lately, and as usual his witty comments are gold! Keep up with your amazing work Nick, and have a great day everyone 🖤💀
Dude Chucky RUINED my childhood but the amount of swearing and being carried around in the third movie really put him in perspective. He's one of my faves now - I'm still a little concerned about a killer doll slicing my ankles from under the bed!
I loved this movie when it came out for all the lore and twists. Recently found it at a thrift store and decided to rewatch it. It's not as great as I remember, but dang I'll still watch it when I'm bored and need something dumb to fill my eyes lol
The way I screamed when I saw the title 😭😭😭 this is literally my cousins and I favorite horror movie. We watch it every summer. It’s so bad it’s good, so absurd it’s iconic.
This movie terrified me as a child, I remember watching the backstories in the special features. I felt bad for some of the ghosts cuz they weren't even bad ppl.
I remember watching this when my buddy had it on, when I got to his house. I don't know the last time I saw it, but I remember liking it Also, I always got a laugh out of the idea of growing up watching The 13 Ghost of Scooby Doo and then having Matthew Lillard act in both this and the Scooby Doo movies

I still cannot BELIEVE that this is how I found out there was a pre-credits scene. I've seen this movie on TV probably 3 times and I never knew about the junkyard scene at the beginning. Even as a kid, I felt like something was off, like I was missing something, but I had no idea what it could be or why.
I remember this movie being TERRIFYING when I was little and I actively avoided it since then. Little did I know it’s essentially as scary as a DCOM 😂
YESSSS!!! a culmination of my fave things - bad movies, nick diramio, and matthew lillard chewing scenery :)
I agree! Mak3es (haa! Thir13eeen Ghosts) for a good morning when Nick posts. :)
Matt Lillard was giving his absolute all in this film when everyone else was phoning it in like they were in it for the paycheck and Lillard is on the floor screaming and slobbering going for the Oscar win
*chefs kiss*
love Matthew Lillard and his always enthusiastic acting
I enjoyed this movie and still do 😂 I always thought the design of the ghosts were great
So did I, really fun collection and scared me at the time
Yeah they went all out on the ghosts. I love it
This movie is even messier then I remember it being from when I used to love it in middle school, but I always really liked the ghosts designs and lore. Even revisiting it with this video, some of those ghosts designs are pretty creepy.
Also the second you brought up Elizabeth Shannon’s characters bizarre obsession with bathrooms it brought me immediately back to how stupid and weird that was
U can’t deny that junkyard frame in the opening credits with the car raised with the cloudy moon in background is beautiful
Please continue to cover bad horror movies! Your take on them is always hilarious!
Also that Mary Kate Ashley crowd stuff 💁♂️ I’d never watch any of them at any age (& Nick finally let’s me know why 🤣)
This was the only horror movie I could handle as a kid, those ghosts were sick.
My mother fully desensitized me by having me watch The Exorcist with her when I was 8. We were THAT kind of household.
@@pablodelsegundo9502 I watched wrong turn with my dad when I was 6 :’)
The ghost backstories are just as good as the actual movie, which is a bit of an insult to the movie but a big compliment to that DVD featurette i overwatched as a kid
That bonus feature was amazing. I definitely watched it more times than the movie.
I introduced this to my brother 2 weeks ago as we love awful horror movies that are good and it was amazing to see a fresh perspective on it
The dad feels more like he and Shannon should be dating it's fucking weird
Matthew clearly did this as a favour as he's sooooo much better at acting than he is in this he clearly was just fucking done
The nanny is just there er because???
Honestly such a great bad movie
Hate it 💚💜
The book of Ghosts too. They clearly didn't have the art departments talk to each other as the Ghosts look nothing like there "inspiration".
Sound was awful and the music coupled with the flashing is headache inducing.
This movie is painful to watch but I've seen it like 10 times now LMFAO
This gave me NIGHTMARES when I was 10. I had to sleep with a nightlight for nearly a year 🤣
me too! i couldn't sleep at all for a few nights, i was traumatize
This one is going to hurt, haha. I loved this movie as a kid, and had a massive crush on Matthew Lillard’s character. 🤦🏻♀️
I love watching him rip apart movies I love lol. I still love the movies tho 🤷♀️ Can’t kill my love
I had a wee bit of a crush on Matthew Lillard. I just love the characters he plays, even Stu.
Now my 13 year old loves him as well.
Girl has good taste.
He is divine in Senseless and SLC punk ✨
I didn’t see it or Princess Bride until I was an adult and I disliked both :(
This movie and Ghost Ship are still two of my favorite horror flicks ever.
I was cracking up from the beginning, especially "thir-thirteen-en ghosts" 😂
Everytime Nick has a derailed sentence or story I’m like I need this person to be my best friend 🤣
And don't forget the post-credit rap song that was a part of a lot of these movies during this time period.
I recognize this move is...bad. It's just bad. But I still love it and the backstory of the ghosts is awesome.
AAHHH YESS
I just got my picture taken with Matt Lillard a week ago and now youre watching a movie with him in it ahh
Jelly!
I LOVED the House on Haunted Hill remake 😍
This is a movie that should have been a TV show for SURE. They had amazing concept art, a complete grimoire of stories for every ghost, and squandered all of it. Prime example of a movie where the most interesting part is the behind-the-scenes work.
I've seen this movie twice, and I cannot recall any explanation for how this recently bereaved, financially strapped family can afford domestic help.
My boyfriend of 2.5 years broke up with me a few days ago, thank you for this distraction, Nick. 💛
Omg I was OBSESSED with this movie as a kid! Matthew Lillard was so hot to my 12 year old self 😂
The ghost they catch in the beginning is The Juggernaut, not the sledge hammer ghost that has the spikes in him.
29:25 For what it's worth, I'm eating lunch and I laughed at that joke, causing me to choke on my food and almost become the 14th ghost.
😅
i grew up traumatized by Chucky and I rewatched it the other day and was so confused how I found that little doll so scary 😂
Dude Chucky RUINED my childhood but the amount of swearing and being carried around in the third movie really put him in perspective. He's one of my faves now - I'm still a little concerned about a killer doll slicing my ankles from under the bed!
@@chillcreep4926 LOL! my moms friend had a chucky doll in her basement and used to tell me it was real 😅*EMOTIONAL DAMAGE*
I loved this movie when it came out for all the lore and twists. Recently found it at a thrift store and decided to rewatch it. It's not as great as I remember, but dang I'll still watch it when I'm bored and need something dumb to fill my eyes lol
Still waiting for the day Netflix gives us a series about the origins of each of the ghosts
My whole childhood was watching this movie over and over again!!
Lmao same
Sameeee
Yeah but on tv with my brother and sister
I clicked for the movie critiques. I stayed for Nick's unhinged commentary. 🤣🤣🤣
Love ya Nick! 💜💜💜
I remember watching this when my buddy had it on, when I got to his house.
I don't know the last time I saw it, but I remember liking it
Also, I always got a laugh out of the idea of growing up watching The 13 Ghost of Scooby Doo and then having Matthew Lillard act in both this and the Scooby Doo movies
this is hilarious,I remember being SO traumatized by this movie when I was a kid its like still triggering me even though it looks so cheesy as an adult lmao
I was too young for this one, so I suppose I'd have the same reaction watching a video on Monster House
@@sadrabbit53 haha I think this one was a *little* more gory than monster house but I bet if I saw monster house as a kid it would have freaked me out too for sure the animation was creepy as hell
@@RebeccaGomezToronto
Yeah that stuff is very, very tame compared to stuff I've seen up to date, but childhood trauma
one movie that scared me so much as a child that i’ve still never watched it at 30 years old is The Ring. i cant make myself put it on and i LOVE horror
“Why is your milk unrefrigerated?” Nick; asking the important questions so we don’t have to. 😂
whyyy does this impoverished family have a live-in maid. just bc it's a single dad? a single mom wouldn't need that, right? that's my least favorite part of this movie.
im so glad you covered it1 i just heard people reference it on a podcast and they mentioned that you never encounter all 13 ghosts, which made me want to watch it again ^^
This was my very first ever horror movie. I couldn't have been any older than 10 when I watched it. What a blast from the past this is.
This is one of my favorite movies and cult classic. I really wish they would make a netflix series based upon the ghosts and their backstories. I want more lore than what was on the special features reel on the dvd lol
Commenting before I watch just to say IM SO EXCITED TO WATCH! 🙌🏼 Can’t wait to laugh at all your witty jokes!! And I definitely watched this as a kid and didn’t sleep for WEEKS!! 😂💀
I used to reread the back stories of all the ghosts on wiki when I was younger. They were my creepypastas before I found out about creepypasta.
I watched this movie for the first time about a year ago and I loved it 😭
I’m a sucker for gimmicky goofy horror and I love Mathew Lillard. The ghost lore is honestly wasted on a movie and would fit so much better in a comic book or video game!
Reminds me of the suffering, has similar cinematography too
I was so obsessed with this movie as a kid that my screen name on AOL was AngryPrincess65. It was the first DVD I ever owned and every once in a while I pull it out and cringe at all of the times I wrote I love Matthew Lyn Lillard all over it in gel pen.
Despite all the flaws you pointed and I've seen other TH-camrs revewing 13 Ghost I will ALWAYS LOVES THIS MOVIE! I LOVE the unique almost "modernish," steam punk design of the house. And I love lore of the ghosts. Honestly I want 13 Ghost to be remade into a horror video game by the team who made Silent Hill!
Always been confused that this destitute and basically homeless family could afford (or needed) a full time live in nanny.
I’m so glad you’re covering this movie!! I was scared of the dvd cover when I went to blockbuster back when I was little hahahah
MFing scifi channel throwing Embeth Davidtz at me mid-movie like I should know who her character is after cutting her damn scene.... This is the second time I've watched this clip breakdown and it still blows my mind. Nick is an international treasure.
Nick! Once again, you have made my whole day with a new upload. You're truly one of the funniest people I've ever had the pleasure of watching! 👑🖤👑
This movie was so terrifying to me as a child I still have parts of it burned into my brain😅but watching Nick break it down as an adult is so comforting to me😂
I watched this movie a bunch of times on pay-per-view at my boyfriend’s house in 2001. I was obsessed. 😅
the horror genre is an absolute treasure trove of content for this channel! I'd love more break downs from anything that actually is (or was at some point) spooky, to the Sharknado type films!!
