Scotty Kilmer hey Scotty I ordered a vss and it wasn't quite the same but I was able to install it now something is causing my battery light to come on even with new alternator. Could it be the VSS?
Does a automatic transmission shift normally if the speed sensor cable is broken? My cars transmission won't shift anymore and the speed indicator is on 0 when I'm driving.
Scotty Kilmer , hey Scott can you please make a video on how to add top speed on to a speedometer , cause my c1500 cluster has a top speed of 80 but I want to add 30 more so it can have a top speed of 110 like the 1990-1992 454ss .
..my speedometer stopped working in 08 suzuki sx4. Looked up part you suggest but abs speed sensor keeps coming up..is that the same thing? When i read on it mentions driver side rear side. I had seen part on autozone that looks like part you show yet costs up to $100, is that correct for the right part?
Scotty Kilmer - you are a true savior.. I learned so much from you that i could've never possibly learn car maintenance from a car repair center. More power to you!
the tach itself generally breaks in the dash unit, they cost a ton, leave it. But the speedo works off a cable on most 93s, so check the speedo cable, it's probably broken.
My speedometer went out in my 96 Ford ranger and I've been dreading doing anything about it so I've just been using a speedometer app but now I know it's not going to be as much of a pain in the butt as I thought it was going to be so thank you for showing just how easy it actually is
scotty you kick ass bud!!! thank you for your channel, your time, your dedication, and most of all your patience with all us diy people. i love your videos and watch em even if i don't need to
Hey Scottie, love your channel! I have a 2002 coachman Miranda that the speedometer moves but goes and stays between 80_90. I had my sister follow me and I was going 45. Would this same fix apply? It's hard to find anything on motorhome repair. I wish you lived closer! Hard to find a good repair shop. Thank you and never stop your videos. You have helped a lot of women know what is going on with their car so they don't get ripped off .

far as I'm concerned, all saabs belong in a junkyard, the company recently went bankrupt and no one wants to buy them. Ignition takes place with individual ignition coils placed on the spark plug concerned. The plug together with the ignition coil and CDM are used to detect combustion and any knocking. This means that neither a camshaft sensor nor a separate knock sensor are required. Over engineering to the max.
I was going to ask also if both the odometer and the speedometer is not working is this due to the speed sensor also ? 1 more question also if you can reply. My radiator fan turns on automatically when i start my car. Doesn't turn off at all... cars computer seems to be fine everything works. Would it be bad wiring or would it be another sensor problem?
What a great wealth of information and knowledge. The tips, tricks and use of modern additives to recondition seals and gaskets save so much money and time. Regards from Oz.

Scotty Kilmer I seen a few of them, And it is awesome that you help people out, I been watching your videos for like a year now. And they are interesting. But i also have something to ask, I own a 1993 honda accord. And the car has been sputtering, Like when i get up to speed, And stay at 1 speed, Like 55 MPH. The car starts sputtering, It started doing this last saturday, Not sure if you would know what is making it do that. But any help would be appreciated, Thanks
AP15sub4sub number one problem on that model is a wearing out distributor causing hesitation and eventual non starting. Number two is a carboned up engine, try my video "how to clean fuel injectors on your car"
it may or may not work with the computer software. But I've seen it work, give it a try, it can't hurt anything. if it doesn't work, send it back to where you bought it.

Hey Scotty I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu and my speedometer stayed at zero so I replaced the speed sensor and it still stuck at zero. Wat could it be then please help?
try this fix, pray it works, cause if not, electronic faults in the rest of the system are hell to diagnose. Though many guys will just gamble with a used junk yard dash unit if sending unit doesn't fix it
since the code reader shows the mileage, either wiring going to the dash or the dash unit is bad. Most guys try a used dash from a junk yard first, last one I did fixed that same problem for 75 bucks when I bartered.
Thanks for the reply! Everything else works on the dash (gas & the hot/cold). I was just driving earlier today and it was working fine. I just don't like driving when its not working.
My scotty first off big fan of yours. My 8 year old son watches your videos every weekend when I pick him up. Anyways My speedometer and rpm hand isn't moving and my automatic transmission in my 97 k1500 isn't shifting correctly. It's like it stuck in 4th or 5th gear. I was running up the road to fix my mother's car then this is happening as we speak
normally just a broken speedo cable on that old thing. Take the dash out, remove the cable from the speedometer head in the dash, and take it for a ride. If the cable doesn't spin when moving, it's broken
I have changed the censor and it is still the same, the mechanic said that the connector inside the gear for the censor is what is bad. Is that possible?

Scotty, how about a troubleshoot/repair video on how to fix malfunctioning vehicle speed sensor on you 1994 Celica? A 1994 Toyota Celica 5 sp. just fell into my lap, and the vehicle speed sensor is not working (I knocked it out of position when I was forcing refurbished set of transmission control cables into place (got those for $8 off a 1999 5 sp from the junkyard, and strategically used electrical and duct tape in order to reinforce it. It shifts like a charm, but for each problems solved, this newbie DIYer is causing a problem. This isn't all bad. I broke the PCV valve (before I knew what it was) while taking off the valve cover. Replaced it, cleaned the MAS sensor and air intake tube and flap, and the chronic low idle problem resolved rather nicely!
Scotty, last year my '94 Camry with 60,000 original miles got a check engine light, it threw a Vehicle Speed Sensor code, and my overdrive went out. A transmission specialist replaced the VSS, which didn't solve the problem, then took my dash out to some dash rebuilding co. and they "replaced a few bad transistors and cleaned up the board" and that didn't fix the problem. Then they dropped the pan, inspected the transmission and changed the fluid and that didn't solve the problem. Then after a bunch of electrical tests on solenoids etc. they installed a new ECU from a Lexus ES300 which eventually made my car not start out in 1st gear anymore (shift solenoid A was just one difference between the computers). And finally they replaced my ECU with an exact matching computer and the problem went away. Until something got squirrelly a few months ago and I got a check engine light again. The car's run fine since then, it passed emissions last month with flying colors, but now I notice that sometimes I get in my car and turn the key and the speedometer says 10 or 15mph and I'm just sitting in the car parked in the driveway! Yesterday I must have only been driving 35 mph and my speedometer was floating all the way up to 60mph. So I think it's progressively getting worse. Any ideas?
generally that's a bad speed sensor, perhaps he didn't use a toyota oem factory sensor. Or, a bad dash unit also does that, that guy saying he "rebuilt" the dash sounds like crap to me, transistors really don't go bad on toyotas, sounds like he was B.S.ing you. I'd go somewhere else this time if I were you
Thank you Scotty, I will do that. I really enjoy the channel and the live show. You deserve all the success in the world for providing people this service. PS I'm going to have to buy that Go-2 socket. That's a lot of added self confidence in my toolbox for only $15! PSS Both my parents got a kick out of the Mercedes video and I think mom's going to stick with her Toyota now so you've saved her some money there.
heymisterderp Sure enough, the problem returned again! I accidentally erased the CEL code by disconnecting the battery, but that was the night before I realized this car is OBD2! ('94 Camry 1MZ V6, hiding behind the ashtray). And since then, it hasn't blown another code yet, but to run a quick test, I disconnected the Vehicle Speed Sensor and then turned the ignition to On, and the speedometer rose to 30mph just sitting in the driveway with a cold motor and the VSS unplugged. So I know the problem isn't the sensor (I'm now the proud owner of TWO good Toyota speed sensors and TWO good Toyota computers! Arggh!). Weird thing too, the speedometer seems to act better when the car is warmed up. The speedometer has stayed on the zero with the ignition On before starting the motor - after it's hot. Maybe that's just coincidence but I've noticed it like that for the past three days straight. I would love to trace the pins of the three wires coming out of the Vehicle Speed Sensor but all three disappears into the wiring harness. I presume one wire is power from a fuse somewhere, one communicates with the speedometer and the third one goes (grounds maybe?) to the ECU. Since the problem is intermittent and the results are so elusive/variable, does this indicate it's likely a conduction/wiring problem somewhere in the wire jungle? Or what else might be a likely culprit? I sure wish this is my 1976 Datsun, I can read the schematic for that. :)
check the dash fuse, if not that, remove the dash, check the wiring connectors for shorts, pray the dash circuitry hasn't melted down as it often does on chrysler products.
thank you it took me weeks to find out werther it was the speedometer or the bcu or the abs even when i changed it and the light went out but that got fix i just have to find out how to get to my transition on my mini copper chilli pack. took a lot of searching on the net till i come across your video.
Did I get somebody's thoughts on a change my daughter's speed sensor out because the speed odometer stopped working and the check engine light was on after I replaced it it started working in the check engine light went off after you drove it for a while it did the same thing again any thoughts answers would be grateful thank you keep up the awesome work man I love you and your videos
We had that problem in a 1994 Rodeo. Had the sensor replaced, but that didn’t fix it. So it is a difficult, expensive fix. It’s hard to get parts for that old thing. Too bad, it was a great truck.
Hey I love your work. You make things look so simple. I bought a 06 Suzuki grand vitara v6 2wheel drive. My Esp light keeps coming on when I first start the vitara. My check engine light blinks and I loose speed. Sometimes it vibrates. Its going through a lot of fuel. Can you please help?
Hey I just got a 2003 Lincoln town car I’ve been cleaning up and fixing and I’m about to have the transmission replaced in two days other then that everything runs great besides the instrument cluster it doesn’t work doesn’t show my speed and the digital part just has lines all tho the gas gage and the cool and heat gage works If you can help me in any way please I’ll be super grateful and I love your videos btw
Scotti I love your channel. Please advise: at 2005 KIA Sorento speedometer gauge start at 20 not Zero mls/h and during driving always displays 20 more!. Computer voltage: 9.6 instead 5.5
Scotty, i have a 01 Tahoe 4wd lt that the RPM and fuel gauge stopped working but all other gauges work, how to diy fix it or know if I need a new instrument cluster
Scotty Kilmer, you can be my salvation lol... My speedometer stopped working, im almost 100% sure the speed sensor needs to be replaced, but im unable to locate it. the vehicle is a chrysler neon, 2000 LE, 3 speed automatic transmission (31TH). If there are some other things i must check, please guide me to troubleshoot this issue, and thanks in advance.
The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is located in the transmission extension housing. that is on the bottom of the transmission near the axle output shaft, jack it up and see.
I have a 1999 Toyota rav4, yesterday I changed the VSS, but the speedometer still isn't working. Could the problem be in the dashboard? Tks in advance, love your vids.
first, get it scanned, flashing D4 means a transmission trouble code has set. Then pray it's just a bad speed sensor on the transmission, as they are known to do just that.
hey scotty my 2002 windstar never gets higher then twenty miles per hour I changed the input and output it worked just right after changing each but went back to doing the same broken thing what is left. I put a new cluster in it also. THanks in advance.
If the transmission is shifting normally your vehicle speed sensor is probably good. This means the VSS signal is making it to the computer. So that leaves a possible wiring problem between the computer and speedo head or the speedo head itself is bad. Some people may refer to it as a cluster.
realize if you bought a good oem factory sensor and not a cheap chinese copy, that it's normally a bad cluster. BUT, the clusters break all the time, so a junk yard used one may very well be broken too. that's even happenned to me when fixing one. I ended up at a speedo repair shop who repaired the speedo in the cluster
I have a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix, my speedometer does not work, so i replaced the speed sensor. The car was giving a trouble code for speed sensor anyways, speedometer still didn't begin to work. Once in a while it will flicker up and down, but that's about it.
hey Scotty, greetings from Australia. I have a speedo problem, but i don't think it's the sensor because when i bash on the dash it starts working again, can u do a video on what to do if u sensor is fine, or just tell me... sorry if u have answered this question a hundred times before... Love the channel man, thanks, hope u get this.
Hi Scotty, I just wanted to say that I'm a big fan, love the work you do, the information and the energy you put into these videos; keep up the amazing work! My father left me a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse and the speedometer doesn't and I don't know where the sensor would be. Can you please help me on its location? Thank you so much for your assistance!
Great job Scotty. Do you have any video's on transfer cases? Mine's shot and there's going to be a big snow storm soon and will probably need my 4WD to work.
I have a 2005 civic. Everything works as it should. I checked the speed sensor as well. Everything checks out. I can see the needle tries to move but hesitates.

Thank you for your help. Mine Is proton savvy it works and stops sometimes
I've known a few myself personally. but perhaps they have more sense than to get involved in the often insane world of fixing modern cars.
check the dash fuse, if not that, remove the dash, check the wiring connectors for shorts, pray the dash circuitry hasn't melted down as it often does on chrysler products.
get a used dash from a junk yard and try that, last one i did cost me 60 bucks and it worked
some can be reprogrammed using a special computer. Contact your manufacturer to see if it can be done on yours.
bad wiring going from the sensor to the dash, or more often a bad dash receiving unit on the speed head.
check the wiring, if it's good, the bcm is probably bad. those modules are insanely complex on gms.
Great vid Scotty, Can you do a video on replacing the odometer lights when they go out.
thank you it took me weeks to find out werther it was the speedometer or the bcu or the abs even when i changed it and the light went out but that got fix i just have to find out how to get to my transition on my mini copper chilli pack. took a lot of searching on the net till i come across your video.
then wiring or dash unit is bad. Most guys try a used junk yard dash, that often fixes it, cause new ones cost a ton
Thanks Scotty.. you the best. Right to the point. Keep showing us your wonderful mind over matter.
IF you have the correct size tiers on it, replace the speed sensor, realize wrong size tires will do that too
We had that problem in a 1994 Rodeo.
Like the video was perfect I have no experience with cars but fixed the speedo my self thank you and very entertaining :)
you have electrical shorts in the wiring system there between the brake light switch and the dash. good luck finding that one
I definitely got to swing by Scotty's shop! 😂😁👍
scotty number one, thank you man
Hey I just got a 2003 Lincoln town car I’ve been cleaning up and fixing and I’m about to have the transmission replaced in two days other then that everything runs great besides the instrument cluster it doesn’t work doesn’t show my speed and the digital part just has lines all tho the gas gage and the cool and heat gage works If you can help me in any way please I’ll be super grateful and I love your videos btw
Scotti I love your channel. Please advise: at 2005 KIA Sorento speedometer gauge start at 20 not Zero mls/h and during driving always displays 20 more!. Computer voltage: 9.6 instead 5.5
no, more often it's a breaking down speedometer head in the dash, or a wearing out speedo cable, that car uses a cable
Scotty, i have a 01 Tahoe 4wd lt that the RPM and fuel gauge stopped working but all other gauges work, how to diy fix it or know if I need a new instrument cluster
no video yet, but that's normally a bad dash unit, most guys try a used dash from a junk yard cause new ones cost a fortune
Finally a video that doesn't say " quick fix: check your fuses"
Tks in advance, love your vids.
thank you scotty. now i know was going with my truck.
first, get it scanned, flashing D4 means a transmission trouble code has set. Then pray it's just a bad speed sensor on the transmission, as they are known to do just that.
Your channel is awesome, man.
generally dash problems on sunfires. Most guys live with it on those things, or try a used junk yard dash.
Scotty I love your videos. They always make me smile. Really fun to watch
on toyotas, almost always bad dash units that cost a ton. Most guys leave em alone or wire a 39 dollar aftermarket tach unit and put it on the dash
try hemmings motor news, they are on the web too
hey scotty my 2002 windstar never gets higher then twenty miles per hour I changed the input and output it worked just right after changing each but went back to doing the same broken thing what is left.
Car problems dont bother me...car mechanics do!! Theyre crazy as hell!! Except for Scotty 😁
do the test in this video, see if a scan tool read speed. if it does, the dash unit speedo head is bad.
realize if you bought a good oem factory sensor and not a cheap chinese copy, that it's normally a bad cluster.
Love the channel man, thanks, hope u get this.
get a used dash, that's what I do, the new speedo heads cost a ton on most cars, plenty of used ones in the junk yards
Thanks for the easy-er way of doing it ,in the 60s
and 70s we used to take the cable out and slather lithium grease all over them.
This dude reminds me of my father and his positive qualities. Just that this dude is a professional lol
rarely a fuse, but wiring or speedo head itself are the common problems plus the sensor itself
no, remove the end on the transmission and get spray lube to spray up into the cable assembly
Hi Scotty,
I just wanted to say that I'm a big fan, love the work you do, the information and the energy you put into these videos; keep up the amazing work!
My father left me a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse and the speedometer doesn't and I don't know where the sensor would be. Can you please help me on its location? Thank you so much for your assistance!
This old man is awsome
Great job Scotty. Do you have any video's on transfer cases? Mine's shot and there's going to be a big snow storm soon and will probably need my 4WD to work.
if it's the speedometer cable, replace it, that old thing doesn't use sensors as in this video
I have a 2005 civic. Everything works as it should. I checked the speed sensor as well. Everything checks out. I can see the needle tries to move but hesitates.
