@@AltCine same with the zraw shite. Would jump on it if it would be in davinci. And for bm, id go 6k bc it can record the 4k raw now..maybe cropped tho. Bit still better, dont have money for that tho haha.
Atomos Ninja was a complete pain with this camera. The monitor itself is fantastic but I'd never buy it again until they improve the connectivity/camera controls. The blackmagic 12g assist looks to be the better option for Bgh1 right now.
Ps, it's only frustrating when you want to do a quick vid or go to gimbal as it will require some assembly but if you have s1h then you wouldn't have this problem. You also probably know the menu so may be easier to navigate. It took me a while but I'm ok with it now.
Hey! I'm interested in the BGH1. The only downside is it doesn't come with Batteries or a charger. I decided to go with the native Panasonic batteries (way overpriced but I wanted to be cautious), however the charger is seemingly way too overpriced (it actually should have come included in the package). Anyways do you have any experience with any other chargers for the Panasonic BGH1 batteries? The one Panasonic sells is mostly plastic and costs $219. Which charger do you use to charge the batteries? Your lovely insight could perhaps save me 100 USD lol.
I wonder... If black magic is allowed to put BRAW internal in their cameras and it's not by definition a100% true RAW file that won't get them in truckee with Red Patents... Wondering if the GH6 could get it as an internal raw format. Maybe wishful thinking.
@@AltCine Yep I bet the Panasonic legal team will get the Heebie Jeebies, too much to loose! Maybe a gh6s/bgh2 with an M.2 nvme slot for cinema DNG and do a software deal for slim raw.
Totally agree with HLG - I thought I would only shoot V-Log, but I love the image of HLG (with a slight desaturation), and it's a lot less work in low light, not least the tiny file sizes :)
Thanks man, much appreciated. I will get an atomos very soon. The ninja v+ will be out imminently so should be able to get a standard used v for a good price. Will definitely do a comparison when I pick it up.
What brand of follow focus rubber strips are you using on that sigma. I like that they are very wide. Seems it would give me more flexibility with my follow focus setup.
I was never really a fan of box cameras until very recently. But, the GH5s is actually my favorite filmmaking camera. The OS is MUCH more intuitive compared to the one in the BGH1. I chose the GH5s OVER the BMPCC4k because of the very reason you were saying about the gimbal. I have an OLD Zhiyun Crane V2 which has a max load of 3lbs? I was NOT gonna buy a new gimbal! The GH5s has been a great little workhorse. Awesome video my dude!
Bro, that is such a big thing to consider....gimbal use! Doing weddings, real estate, festivals etc you need to have a light powerful setup with good battery life.
@@AltCine Good point! But we always have to wait with Panasonic! the GH6 is long due! It´d better be something amazing with built-in NDs, incredible low-light performance, and capable of recording to an external SSD, or else I´m switching...

I loved your review I've had the camera for several weeks now and I absolutely love the footage that comes off of it this and the form factor is making it my Daily Camera Can't stand the menu literally I just let it run forever just because I don't want it to interact with the menu thank goodness the battery lasts forever so it's not a problem By any chance did you figure out how to reset the function buttons also I'm trying to figure out how to change the default start up settings So that every time I turn it off it resets to 8-bit... I just wanted to shoot one setting which is the highest 10bit I love running it without a screen so I just want to be able to hit one button and know that it's recording and what I wanted too The footage off the Ninja V is awesome there are there's a high chance of getting braw via video assist which I'm really hoping for
As for the buttons, not all of them can be remapped. I really would like to remap the play and back button but I can't remap the back button so there's no point..... highly frustrating.
I know I'm replying to a year old question but maybe this will help others that encounter this problem..... I had the same issue when I first got mine, the settings kept resetting themselves to what seemed like a default setting. The bgh1 has a tiny internal battery that supplies power to retain the settings when the camera is turned off. If the camera has been off for a length of time, the settings all go back to a default "out of the box" setting. You have to leave the bgh1 plugged into the wall charger while turned off for at least 24 hours to recharge the internal battery. After that it should retain your settings. Also, I found it best to save the resolution settings to "save settings" #1. The camera always resets it self to #1 setting for some reason. Again, I believe that problem also goes back to a dead internal battery. Once I left mine plugged in for a couple of days, it started to retain all the settings and I haven't had any problems with it since. Hope this helps someone.
@@AltCine I'm a student i just got the bgh1 what lense should I get i have the rokinon 12mm what is the best affordable 🤔 lense and what mm should I use to make films
Yeah this is definitely a niche camera and won't be popular unless you own a studio, drone or something of the sort. I think because it's approved for Netflix originals people assume it to be some sort of "cine" camera. Yes you can use it to make movies but it's use cases are better used elsewhere.
Hi, I've thought about it a lot actually. I used to have one and sold it quite cheap...it ate batteries like crazy. It would be interesting to see if the footage is similar to BM 🤔 The handle is the cheap Camvate wooden handle. I've since bought the Tilta wooden grip, the one they promote with komodo and it's ok I guess.
@@AltCine thanks for the quick reply. I can imagine the ProRes would be similar. The 12G can do BRAW and 🤞 a future update could see BRAW like they did with the S1H. Battery life is a common theme with BMD. Thanks for the video and handle suggestion.
@@mannydrives I hope it does get braw. Tbh if it did that would be a dream for me....so many options in one camera it would be amazing. @@AltCine I hear you. Switched from Premier a couple of years ago and never looked back. If BRAW was available then the BGH1 would be my next camera. Looking forward to future videos. Take care.
There should be no difference between all-i and long gop. I would say, that long gop is probably better quality, because it may help to compress more than 3 times and bitrate difference is about 3 times. You need all-i for editing, not for filming. But i can be mistaken, correct me if I’m wrong.
Technically I guess you're right if you look at it as filming Vs editing (editing being colour grading or VFX). If it's just filming and you don't to colour match etc then yes LongGop is more than acceptable.
@@AltCine if you edit, you can convert to prores to get editing performance without loosing quality. So, you probably can use cheap sd with speed about 170 Mb. Did perform tests comparing long gop with all-i on static and moving objects? If there will be a loop in motion, you can probably use “difference” compositing mode in NLE. There will be different noise print, but may be you will be able to see something more. Or do you have any other idea how ti compare all-i with long gop?
@@ilyas-film hmm I'm not sure converting to ProRes would make any difference. If I was going to grade I'd want the individual frames and more information that all-i gives you.
@@AltCine all-i does not give you more information. It does not use intra-frame compression. That's the reason files get bigger. Only reason you need all-i is for editing, so your editing app will work faster, spending less time to de-compress video. You can use prores to help editing app, because prores is all-i codec.
Thank you😀. Blackmagic has always been my favourite. I know I ragged on them about the 6kpro but that was only because I really liked the camera. I've owned 4 Blackmagic's and loved them all and don't think there's anything that could replace my p4k right now. I still use the bgh1 a lot, I really like it but not enough to give up my p4k.
@@AltCine Cheers, I'll mostly be using it for narrative work, both for my channel and for uni, though also for some documentary and other uni projects, and paid gigs. I was strongly considering the BMPCC 6K, but this seemed like a more practical choice for my workflow - the BGH1 is more modular, better build quality, has dual SD recording (I've had some scares recording onto a single SD in the past so this is a big one for me), great battery life, fits on a gimbal, etc. You mostly covered it in this video lol. Also the image, while maybe not quite as epic as the Blackmagic, is still beautiful.

Very good question bro! Panasonic really need to listen to the consumer but for some reason they don't. For years, tech reviewers and consumers have badgered Panasonic to sort out the menu system but they just won't do it. They could easily be recognised as one of the greats but they're resting on their previously great name which hasn't really held much weight since around 2010. They make top level products but if ui and regarding camera's AF is no good then they'll just fade into oblivion. If the GH6 does come and it still has contrast based AF then the writings on the wall and will confirm that Panasonic just don't care about their business.
@@AltCine you're right... Personnally I think they just don't listen, maybe they're not well organized like Canon or Sony. There must be something. We'll see the GH6, the S1 and S5 looks cool but Zeek ressell his S5 because of not good control quality and moire. Such a shame, the could be so better

Tbh I agree with you. This camera is definitely aimed more for studio use and I definitely realise that now. I'm much better at navigating now. Took longer than my other cams but I'm definitely a lot more comfortable.
Yeah it's definitely a niche camera for sure. It's power lies in its ability for networking and live streaming. Then I'd say the form factor for drone or gimbal work. Finally, 1 cheap battery can power this cam for hours so great for long form work where you need to be minimal It definitely wouldn't suit everyone but it is a great camera.

On the gh5 if you half hold down the shutter button it takes you out of the menu There is also the custom menu so you can add your favorite preferences to one tab in the menu. I agree though the menu overall is really complicated. Blackmagic by far has the best menus of any camera I have ever used

I don't sub to a lot of people, but when I do it's bc of clear and concise breakdowns and personality. You check em all! What do you think of upgrading to Lumix S5 from Canon M50?
Bro that means so much to hear that! TH-cam is a stress so I usually only make videos when there's something mostly useful to say. I actually haven't owned the M50 for a while now and it's something I often regret. If nothing catches my eye soon I may just get another for my carry round and TH-cam cam. Hi I was wondering if someone can help me out here. My Atomos Ninja V and BGH1 setup has been giving me trouble with the display information on the BGH1 is being recorded onto the file for the Ninja V. I don't have that issue on my Canon EOS R. Has anyone had that same issue?
Can't you just do a clean hdmi out? You can set it to one of the function buttons.
I haven't got my atomos yet rhough so can't comment on if that's the correct way. Hopefully someone else can chime in.
Epic dude! Really refreshing to see such in depth on something else than p4k or anything bm. Even z cam gets a lot more buzz now..and atm its just the price that holds me back feom the z cam life tbh. They have built in nd things, turbo mount..so cool things all feom z cam family themselves..ah well..
Thanks brother. Yeah the BM hype is real lol.
I must admit that I'm getting more tempted by the day to pick up a Z-cam, the only thing holding me back is the raw workflow...I'm not into that transcoding business 🥱.
I've gotta do a sharpness test on this camera this week before it goes head to head against P6kpro

Is this camera frustrating without a built-in monitor or touchscreen ? I am a S1H owner but thinking about a box camera as a second camera
I would also love to know. Does some external recorder such as Atmos Ninja V help?
How do you use micro SD in blackmagic?
I wonder... If black magic is allowed to put BRAW internal in their cameras and it's not by definition a100% true RAW file that won't get them in truckee with Red Patents... Wondering if the GH6 could get it as an internal raw format. Maybe wishful thinking.
It's a good question! I doubt Panasonic will though, I think they'll rely on Atomos as a crutch.
I'm glad to hear this and agree in low light. Just a gentle massage in post and it looks great.
Hi, many thanks for your review. Do you know if it is/will be possible to use the BGH1 with the Shogun 7?
Thanks. Yes you can but no raw.
Almost at 4k bro! 😃🚀
😁 getting there slowly 👍🏾
Great review man. Thanks, i would be amazing to see a comparison between the raw bh1 with atomos ninja vs the bmpcc

Nice! I hope the gh6 will be available in a cube form factor too :))
I think they'll keep the GH line as hybrid and probably drop a bgh2 next year.
@@AltCine Good point! But we always have to wait with Panasonic! the GH6 is long due! It´d better be something amazing with built-in NDs, incredible low-light performance, and capable of recording to an external SSD, or else I´m switching...
@@tubeman1983 yeah I hear that. Panasonic are good but not really a company you hold out for. As much as I like this cam it will probably be my only Panasonic.

I loved your review
I've had the camera for several weeks now and I absolutely love the footage that comes off of it this and the form factor is making it my Daily Camera
Can't stand the menu literally I just let it run forever just because I don't want it to interact with the menu thank goodness the battery lasts forever so it's not a problem
By any chance did you figure out how to reset the function buttons also I'm trying to figure out how to change the default start up settings
So that every time I turn it off it resets to 8-bit... I just wanted to shoot one setting which is the highest 10bit
I love running it without a screen so I just want to be able to hit one button and know that it's recording and what I wanted too
The footage off the Ninja V is awesome there are there's a high chance of getting braw via video assist which I'm really hoping for
As for the buttons, not all of them can be remapped.
Hope this helps someone.
ty solid review with no BS AWESOME
Thank you, really appreciate it 👍🏾👍🏾
@@AltCine I'm a student i just got the bgh1 what lense should I get i have the rokinon 12mm what is the best affordable 🤔 lense and what mm should I use to make films
I do not find very many people talking about this camera.
Maybe because it is entry-level and Panasonic fans already have other cameras.
Yeah this is definitely a niche camera and won't be popular unless you own a studio, drone or something of the sort.
I think because it's approved for Netflix originals people assume it to be some sort of "cine" camera.
Yes you can use it to make movies but it's use cases are better used elsewhere.
Have you thought about pairing the BGH1 with a 5” 3G BM Video Assist? Also, what handle are you using?
Hi, I've thought about it a lot actually. I used to have one and sold it quite cheap...it ate batteries like crazy. It would be interesting to see if the footage is similar to BM 🤔
The handle is the cheap Camvate wooden handle.
I stopped using fcpx a couple months ago to force me in resolve so I don't see any benefit in ProRes raw right now.
Thanks for watching and commenting and please keep an eye out for my build video coming soon...it should be a beast, I hope lol
Awesome content. Thanks for sharing this
No probs bro 👍🏾👍🏾
Great video! Has the new update from blackmagic changed your mind by any chance? 🙂
Great review bro. Surely the Atomos Ninja V can record to the SSD 'IF' using that as a monitor... right? lol
Hi sorry for late reply. Yes it can record to SSD but shooting raw was a problem. I could only select 50fps and the files were humongous
Great video brother!
Thank you 🙌🏾
Do you experience some delay hdmi ??
A little but it's so minimal you don't notice.... however I think there's been about 3 times when I actually noticed at least 1 second delay.
just bought mine on sunday, waiting for the monitor and metabones speedbooster to arrive so i can start playing with it
Congratulations bro 😁 really is an awesome camera! What's your main use case and why did you choose this camera?
@@AltCine Also right after posting my first comment, the adapter arrived!
@@tabongaproductions haha cool, you'll have to let me know how you get on with the metabones...I lost out on 2 cheap ones at auction recently.
Anyway I just watched your movie and rated on IMDb. Also subbed and will watch your others. You definitely got skills man 👌🏾
Also I hear you about reliability. This camera hasn't missed a beat yet and although it's not raw you can easily get a very pleasing look from it.
As long as I don't push the grade hard, I can match the footage to my p4k easily. Love this camera and got some high praise from a client yesterday on the quality of the footage.
@@AltCine Yep will do, already impressed by how tightly the metabones attaches to the camera, I'd heard other reviewers complaining that it was a bit loose but definitely not the case here.
Bummer about you missing out on them. I was pretty lucky, I got mine like new for quite a good deal.
And thank you! Much appreciated. I'm definitely following your channel, love your videos - very concise and to the point, also you can take some sweet shots.
Glad to hear that it's worked so well for you, can't wait to start using mine. Also I don't mind the lack of internal raw, processing those files is a headache I can live without. If it comes to it I'll invest in an Atomos Ninja V
Lmao!!!! About the battery... menu is very clunky that is a Fact!
Quick question... how do you edit the names from c1, c2,...ect. I have no clue and I think that will make the menu a bit more manageable Bm6kpro is the best thing ever when it comes to menus. Panasonic expects us to use an atomos. I have a shogun inferno and its a little too big but its easy peesy for recording.. The form and feel of the bgh1 is too good to ignore.
Great video, i appreciate what your up to friend!
Lol agreed man..the menu is dumb!
To do the menu rename we'll have to chat on Instagram @imceuk, writing it here is going to be like an essay.
It definitely helps with the profiles and highly recommend if using the bgh1 for run'n'gun.
I think Panasonic made it like a set it and leave it studio cam but still....if you were new on a set that used these you'd have no hope in hell of setting one up unless you use a pc to copy the settings from one cam to another.
Thanks for watching bro and hit me up on insta and I'll send you a couple video clips.
Ps, and yes the form factor is amazing and I love that the files are very easy for my pc and laptop to edit 🙌🏾
Thanks for this video, very difficult to find feedback on the BGH1. Why do you prefer to use it over your pocket 4k? Other than the robust build. Would you consider a bmpcc 6k pro again if they fixed all those initial issues you had?
Thanks for watching bro. I'll be honest and say that I probably won't use the bgh1 for creating short movies (it's possible) I'd use my p4k.
The reason I like using it is I think the image is very good (although I've been told I soften it too much lol), build quality, handling but most importantly all day battery.
I will definitely look at buying a 6kpro again at some point but not yet...maybe September/October.

I'm back here again... Why... I'm reconsidering.
🤣🤣
Are they too proud to admit they are in the wrong direction with contrast AF ?
I can't help but feel a lot of these menu-speed complaints are aimed at those looking to run'n'gun with this camera. It seems this is the non run'n'gun version of the GH5, set up for cinema use.

Am I missing something? I don't see the purpose of this over a regular camera. Just seems like a bunch unnecessary work for no reason
Yeah it's definitely a niche camera for sure. It's power lies in its ability for networking and live streaming. Then I'd say the form factor for drone or gimbal work.
Finally, 1 cheap battery can power this cam for hours so great for long form work where you need to be minimal
It definitely wouldn't suit everyone but it is a great camera.

They make amazing stuff but whoever does the Ui needs talking to.
On the gh5 if you half hold down the shutter button it takes you out of the menu
There is also the custom menu so you can add your favorite preferences to one tab in the menu. I agree though the menu overall is really complicated. Blackmagic by far has the best menus of any camera I have ever used
