Scott would never call himself a rock or metal bass player - and that's exactly why we dared him to listen to a Papa Roach song for the very first time and attempt to play along. Scott has never heard the song, let alone the band! We gave him the track without bass and asked him to come up with his own bass part. What is he listening for? Tune in and find out!

6:26 the definition of "a chord is not a chord until the bass player decides which note to play"
I was just watching some drumeo stuff. This concept but on bass is what I needed!
Those videos have just started showing up for me
Same as I've been playing drums for many years, I purchased a fender jazz bass a few months ago and love this new series! Just what i need from both channel lol
I love how these two channels share viewers.
Same!
same here ! AWESOME
make this a series on the channel PLEASE!!
We've got a playlist of all of these we've done so far! th-cam.com/video/HXxPUxjQ-cI/w-d-xo.html
@@devinebass OMG i love it
@@devinebass yeah, what he said. we need more.
I can’t stop listening to his take on the verse parts
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make Scott doing this a weekly ritual. I will literally watch him do this all day every day.
Came here to say this. I love watching Scott (the SBL man himself) do this challenge!!
That low C to B sounds dope.
Dont tell Scott but he improved the bass grooves in this song. Bravo Scott, you ROCK!!!
The base part that Scott played was really well done! Bass playing is about choices, and how we help color the music without getting in the middle of it. Excellent example of just that!
By the way, I spelled, BASS correctly in my head, unfortunately auto corrupted misspelled it before I was able to see it.
Cheers, Paul! :)
I am surprised that Scott didn't love his tone because I thought it was fantastic, especially during the chorus. I Didn't expect it to sound that great playing with fingers, but it really worked for me. I love this series and it would be very cool to see Josh from BassBuzz trying it!
You are so right! His tone on this song was so good... I liked it more than the original. You're also right that the type of content was so fun its worth making a regular feature. --Great post! :D
Scott just improved the baseline by about 1000%
Loved watching Scott work his way through that! great result. Top dude!
Cheers Ian!
I love when you get other great bassists to try this concept, but there's something really special about watching the hosts we've grown attached to participate for themselves. Excellent job!
Appreciate that!!
This was f***ing awesome! Please make a tab of Scott's playing here!
Love it! Can't believe he hadn't heard this song!
he definitely has. this song has been everywhere for the last 20+ years and he's a musician who knows all types of music lol
Invite Mark Michell from Low End University to do this challenge
that's be awesome!
oh yeah this guys rocks i love that punk series that he is doing ! watchin him react to NOFX made my day for weeks
I love the drumeo version, but the hell, they are playing drums, uuuh.... doing it with the greatest instrument there is and the best team around the bass, is awesome! More, more, more of it!
Scott's version of the part reminded me of a story from when I was studying audio engineering, back in late '99-early-'00. During the class, I had a chance to play bass on a few recordings and, since I was in my prog phase at the time, I liked to make the bass parts a bit ... interesting. During one session, I heard the talkback mic open up while I was playing and the instructor/producer yelled "John, stop playing so many g*ddamn notes!". I don't know why I was suddenly reminded of that. LOL
Tasty choices around 6:30, good examples of dropping the root. Surprised Scott didn't know Last Resort.
Back in the day, this was how I taught myself to improve my bass playing. Take a random song I don’t know and right my own bass line for it. Really gives you an ear for tone and notes, for added difficulty I would pick genres that didn’t normally have prominent bass. Would love to see more of this from you guys
way more of this! you guys are the best!
Cheers, appreciate that!!
Scott was amazing .... I learn so much from watching the process of breaking the song down
Well that was FUN! Thanks Scott and Ian
So much fun!
Love it!! please more like this!
This was one of the first songs I ever learned how to play, it is an absolute blast to play.
love this format
We need this format as often as possible!!. 🤘🏻😎
This was so good. Awesome work, Scott.
Great video ❤
Please do more of this challenge! No matter with who, just MORE. It's so satisfying to see different players from different genres do it
We definitely want more of this !!!!!
I love seeing bass players more talented than me trying to figure out cool riffs to play. More of this, please??!
More to come!
I love video’s like this: they are fun and informative. And it’s the perfect example of why I love the creativity of playing bass, and the variety from different interpretations.
Scott's tone is stunning!! Love it!!
This is awesome, more please! 🙏🏻
Thanks again guys, great stuff ! Well nailed Scott !
Hard work done, thank you :)
More of this format on a regular basis, please. The comparison between the original and Scott's bass line is really instructive.
Cheers for that, more of these to come!!
Great video, love the improv over the chord progression ❤
I love these videos. Well done!
You guys are always definitely entertaining, first and foremost! I would watch this as a series. Especially for songs, like this, that that have that cringe but nostalgic factor! As an aspiring bassist, its amazing to get into your minds while you figure out a bassline... I hope for more!
always awesome episode
These are soo much fun...get a pic of the line sheet that these players make for future videos...I love to see what they write. And longer videos are great too.
You're so right, that would be interesting to see!
I love what you did Scott ❤
Very cool fills 🤯
Lifetime member of SBL and Drumeo. Great to see the similar concept on both my main instruments!
Scott did an awesome version! I loved it!
That was awesome!
Love this channel, Both of you are great bass players
Love this idea!!!
Sounds great, Scott!
love this
This is no doubt my favorite channel ❤ u guys rule
Crushed it! I loved seeing Scott playing around with an otherwise fairly straightforward song
Scott, I'm surprised you don't know Papa Roach. Personally, I think you were more creative than their original basslines, and I liked about 95% of the lines you chose. Super great work! I really liked seeing your process as a working musician. Thank you for letting us observe your creative thought processes. This was a fun video type, challenging Scott to play something he didn't know (which was probably really hard to find... he knows a lot about music of all kinds). Thank you all for posting this! I feel inspired to go play my bass now.
Stellar performance.
Epic video boys 🤙🏼
I really like this type of video. It encourages creativity. That's the essence of being human.
And it doesn't have to be songs you haven't heard before. This can be alternative bass lines and even several bass lines for the same song. I'd like to see videos like that.
Don't care what bands you do as long as this keeps up. Love it.
Well done
👏👏👏 Amazing bass line you created, Scott! I loved it! 👍
Cheers!!
I just love these! Nice job.
Cheers!!
This series is fabulous.
Appreciate that!!
This is the first time in this series the new bass lines are better than the original ones and improved the song. Kudos to the great Mr. Devine.🎉
Loved it
Well done Scott
more of this please. watching from philippines
More to come!!
More please!
This is the only Papa Roach song I know and I found it from learning to play guitar. Have found so many random artists from playing bass and guitar
That was awesome! Please more 🎉
More to come!
more of these pleeeeeaaaseeee!!!
more to come!
More of that. Brillant stuff.
my band opened for Papa Roach when this song just came out. Great guys and great song!
🔥🔥🔥
More of this pleeeease!
More to come!!
Scott must've been living under a rock not knowing this song!
However, his take was really tasteful and included some ingenious passages.
I must say though, I thought he was going to go all the way and use a pick on this one!
Very good fun to watch, Scott was like a bass Gladiator in an Internet Amphitheatre... in a fight to the death for the amusement of the amassed crowds 😅
Now, let's throw some old Rainbow, Deep Purple or Black Sabbath at him!! They're very interesting to play with and all have massive back‐catalogues to delve into
This was awesome! Now I would love to see Tobin Esperance taking the challange
I love this concept !!!
I've seen it on other musical channels (drumeo and others) but so far those are awesome
EDIT: Scott's version sounds richer than the original I think. Well done !
Lol the tone in Scott's voice: Are you really going to make me introduce myself on my own channel. Blasphemy!
Sick mr.Devine!
Go go go! So interesting to watch players attempts on music they are not familiar with! Their perspective and choices. More more more!
More to come!
U R really nice guys. Great bass players. I love your videos no matter what. THANKS
Please find someone who hasn’t heard “You Get What You Give.” That song has an insane bassline.
Love that drumeo concept
Dude you crushed it.
I love that song and what you made out of it 👍
Would love to see your approach on some heavier stuff 🤘
Cheers for that, appreciate it! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
absolute amaze format
DAMMMMN!! - The chops on that!
Good job Scott
I really need to see Sharon try this
It’s coming…
@@IanMartinAllison Ill wait as long as it takes
Best vid on the channel. I saw my own pain!
Love to see Scott Sweat....Great Content gents
This was the first song I learned on guitar! My buddy Garret showed me the riff one day. Will always have fond memories of this song
Love seeing this concept from all musicians, but bass in this format is a game changer I think. Reharmonizing the song like that is awesome. It sounded way better!
Could lean in to that as a video on its own, how would a couple bassists take a certain song and reflavor it
Nice! I know it's not possible for a lot of guests, but I think the format does work better when you're both in the same room
I appreciate the fact that Scott is playing the five string. My instrument of choice.
Have been watching the drumeo version of this format, super interesting seeing how different musicians make their choices and reveal their process. Would be great to see different genres tackled by guest pro players.
we've already done some of those with Chris Chaney, Sean Hurley, Charles Berthoud, Nick Campbell and Justin Raines! Check them out!
Bring low end university on! He’s a killer bassist and he has perfect pitch so it would be an interesting view on how it works!
Yea Drumeo has come up with an absolute killer format and i love you guys doing this too! Honestly the only thing i am missing is the nomination at the end. i would love for you guys to give OG bass youtubers like David Carracio a go at this. or any other well known bass player. and let your guest nominate someone else at the end of the run for me that creates a cool hype and anticipation for the next video in this series.
Also i love the podcast you guys dropped earlier! the long format is perfect, i love my podcasts a bit longer. the screensharing is very pleasing. and i love that multiple different topics are discussed. honestly a little bit less script is a win in my book. talk about what you guys have going on in your life musically or even personally and vibe of that.
I also like that you guys still stay true to the original SBL purpose which was and still is Scott's bass Lessons, the courses you guys have and still push to young players should always remain :)
much love!
Scott got the chops. 🔥
Ale of the warning would be a cool guest!
Only scott can find soace for jazzy licks in there 😂 keep em coming!
More to come!!
Very cool content. I enjoyed the interpretation. May have even been better than the original, too! Keep doing these.
Cheers for that! More to come!
Been waiting for basslines from japan for months. I'll never lose my faith😂
