My assumption would be that it was a Jack song, but the breakdown was an improv between them. But you know what they say about assumptions: they make an ass out of you and umptions.
I don't know how much the editing is hiding the time. But him showing his thought process, patient and being able to play it bar by bar was actually impressive.
@@IanMartinAllison actually I wanna see it lol. Might even make a fun podcast episode… find a crazy line, sit down and just record one of yall learning it completely uncut. Would be super dope to see
@@IanMartinAllison that’s pretty good time, you did an awesome job! I also really appreciate the clarity of the bass in the recording, it really helps with recognizing the notes/intervals. In learning songs for cover bands I’ve found that many bass lines aren’t quite this clear, so I think this particular song could be a great exercise for those looking to advance their ear training. 👍🏻
You can tell just by watching their other vids that Ian is a killer player. I think he may have even been hamming it up a bit. This tune isn't *terribly* difficult
Ian and Sharon have been a godsend to this channel. Don't get me wrong, it was great before. But now it's better than it's ever been. I love the chemistry all three of you have. Ian and Scott's bromance fills me with joy.
Ten minutes into the video and I realized I was seating and smiling all the time, such a joy. It took him one year less than it'd taken me to get the line to the tips of the fingers so far.
I’m gonna stick with Jaco, but suggest Joni’s “Dry Cleaner From Des Moines”, specifically the intro on Shadows And Light live concert. Much less well known, yet still predictably bonkers.
@garrettlimberis9313 I learned it once back in college, because our marching band was playing Birdland, and I recently picked up the bass again and could not get those harmonics to come out anymore lol
This is the most entertaining video I’ve ever seen on TH-cam. I’m grinning like I slept with a hanger in my mouth. I’ve been learning to play songs like this for 25 years. It took me several hours to figure out this bassline - but I love the teaching point about singing the notes. If you can’t find them with your voice, it’s going to be much harder to find them on your bass!
My tip is not to try to get back right away if you're hesitating. Take a breadth and try to hear the part in your mind and jump back on once you have it in your head.
I love that there’s tab/notation with this, but I highly recommend learning it by ear first. IMO the only way to train your ear to recognize intervals and patterns is by doing it. If you just want to learn the song quickly then jump straight to the PDF, but you might be missing out on a great learning opportunity.
Totally agree picked up a bass because of this song. people think I’ve been playing for so long even though in reality it’s only been 3 years. learning just one piece of this a week is such great practice for someone !
Man, i loved (and hated) learning this song in college, and playing it for my senior recital. But i wouldve LOVED to play this and tear it apart with Ian when he was still teaching lessons at the college I went to!
For all the years that I've listened to and learned Vulfpeck lines, this is the one that I've never had the patience to teach myself. Now I'm inspired to spend some time on it. Truly the modern bassist's anthem
I recently found this channel and it has really made me find my way back to more playing and less producing when it comes to music. Thank you for great content and the willingness to share your hard earned knowledge. If I could have any requests, it would be a dive into the world of reggae bass playing and some of the bass icons of this genre.
Absolutely love the learning-on-the-fly content. Lessons and exercises are one thing, but these "figure it out" moments are what will make or break you when you show up to a jam.
Quick correction for future knowledge - Woody Goss, the keyboard player, actually wrote the line. Joe just played it incredibly well. It's inspired by 'Teen Town' on Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius. Love the vid!
This is hilarious and tremendously informative because yeah! this is what we all go through learning these parts. I LOVE the singing the parts to get them into the brain. Ian and Scott bring it. So much fun!
To be honest, you didnt struggle nearly as much as I expected, hearing those intricate lines, and the "singing before playing" advice and demonstration is GOLD to wrap your head around things. Thank you for this video. As for an idea of what to put Scott through: Ernie Ball have this "string theory" video series inviting artists to talk and play their isolated parts. There's one with Justin Chancelor from Tool where his tone and riffs shine throughout the whole thing, but at 7:37 he plays a part of "Wings for Marie", the section on 8:56 is (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful things ever written for bass, which I never before fully appreciated hearing it within the mix with the also haunting Maynard vocals on top. I wish Scott could try learning and playing the whole section for us, if you could. Thanks!
I could honestly watch you two learn Mary Had a Little Lamb but love this song. Love you guys, great job Ian and watching one in pain with the other eating it up was a blast! Would love to see Scott in the hot seat next with Rock Steady - Aretha Franklin!
This was one of the first ones I challenged myself to learn by ear when covid shutdown started and it was so fun. Another was Molasses by Hiatus Kaiyote, which would be fun to see Scott play.
Great job, Ian. You are an absolute beast for working that out by ear on camera. I already saw someone suggest this in the comments, so I'm going to second that Scott should learn The Real Me by The Who.
Great fun learning A WOODY GOSS tune! The awesome Keyboards with the sweet Rhodes pad underneath with that awesome bass line! Awesome breakdown Lads! Great job Ian! Awesome fun! Scott has to do "Roundabout" haha!
I just learned Dean Town in the last week.... one piece of advice for everyone is if you do a play along with a TH-cam video, you can customize the playback speed. The preset is to 0.75 if you need to slow it down, but you can increase it in 5% increments without any change in pitch in the customization tab. I found that a huge help because the jump between 0.75 and normal is too much of a shock when you are learning it. I just went, 80, 85, 90, 95 and pretty much have it now. Its a tough tune and the ability to gradually ramp up the speed helped me a lot.
Can we just take a second to appreciate the skill at learning somthing by ear for a moment! Such a rare trait to come by these days! Also for a suggestion for Scott, give him some Periphery to do. I want to hear that man do some Djent bass
I have found over the years that when I hear an awesome bass line, if I don't HAVE to learn it, I won't, as it often takes away the enjoyment of listening to the original. If I was going to learn it, I'd put the song through a piece of software I bought called Moises. Separate the bass line, then slow it down. Whether or not my fingers do their job is another matter. Love to all x
I learned how to play Dean Town by ear using a YT video, cutting it in to 6 fragments and played along with each segment on 75% speed until I got it right. Then practiced the whole thing on 75% for a while an then on 100% speed which is considerably more difficult (for me) but I got there in the end. It took me a while though, it's pretty tough. I use the DT lick as a warmup routine now ;-)
Hate to suggest another bass channel but the guy from TALKING BASS TH-cam channel does a bang-up job of breaking this tune into manageable chunks. 30 min video. HOWEVER, in order to keep it tight one MUST play it REGULARLY.
Of Scott hasn’t played it… Friday Night At The Cadillac Club!!! Insane Bob Berg tune, took me about 15-20min to transcribe but a few days to get it up to tempo haha Video was great fun as usual!
I love watching the SBL clips! And i'm not even a bassplayer myself. If you guys ever find the time to talk about Aaron Mills from the band Cameo, that would be great! Greetings from Belgium.
You guys are awesome. This track has been a fav for a long time. Thanks so much for breaking it down. I’ll be saving this to help me even begin to approach learning it!
It's really telling how quickly Ian can hear and then sing parts. I'm pretty sure this reflects years of transcribing! There's no royal road 🛣️ (or it's nice video editing)
Ha, Ian's doing Shaz Face 😁. That aside, that is really impressive dude, to get a new song in just 10 minutes. I hope I can do that at some point. Way to go Ian

@devinebass 'Put it Down' - Otis McDonald - John Patitucci - Just a solid stinkin' groove
