A much unfairly derided movie by the critics. Ice Station Zebra, as a movie is very different to the Alistair McClane novel. Both work very well. However had the movie been akin to the novel it would most likely have been a failure. It was prudent to change the storyline quite radically for the movie. Ice Station Zebra the movie is a superb example of a spy thriller adapted for the screen. The score has a sweeping epic quality which the film calls for. All round this much denigrated spy thriller has refuted the adverse reaction of its detractors. The movie is excellent in all respects.

I served on the U.S.S. Ronquil ... the submarine used in this movie. The Ronquil is SS-396. A great deisel boat not a nuclear sub. It is decommissioned now but was a wonderful submarine.

I can still see an American nuclear submarine heading out into the vastness of the ocean...Majestic! The music represents the power of the submarine preparing to dive deep below the surface and project the awesome power of America. Wow!

The music that inspired me to become the artist that I am now. It cracked the code in my inner child’s mind - creating the first stepping stone - opening my dream of creating the fantastic in art , film and animation. Legrand was indeed grand in his dramatic and awe-inspiring music. Music that still sparks the great potential in cinema!

As wished, we now can listen to Michel Legrand's superb colorful score to Ice Station Zebra. The picture, directed by John Sturges and starring Rock Hudson and Ernest Borgnine is filled with no repetitive music at all. Just the one motif from the main titles gets time to shine here and there (especially in the entr'acte and the film's closing). The whole rest is an original and doesn't play with motifs at all. „Under The Ice“ stays as an eery and atmospheric favorite.
    Enjoy!

Another good one Fred. I've been following you vids for a while now. Your a man after my own heart.
Back in the early or mid 70's I was looking through on of my mom's movie books. It happened to have an image of the poster for this film. I remember wanting desperately to see it. Believe it or not, that very evening I saw the preview for the upcoming television premire. As you might imagine, I was more than a little excited.

I saw the "Roadshow" version as a kid at the Cinerama Dome theater in Hollywood. One of the wonderful things about this score in that full-length version was that the show had an intermission, and there was a whole REEL of footage of the sub with the great score over it as an "entr'act" to get you back in the mood after the intermission! SO thrilling and brilliant. Thanks! (BTW, allegedly this was Howard Hughes' favorite movie and he ran his own personal print of it in his Las Vegas hotel-top hideaway in his later years.)

I saw this at the downtown Chicago premier in Cinerama. It was a much hyped and promoted flick at the time. That cast and this music should say it all. Plus, it came out at the peak of the Cold War. It's not, and never was, "under-rated"...just beautifully aged.

One of my favorite movies from the '60's having a great score. A good spy thriller with a much more realistic plot and vastly different than the James Bond franchise. I thought it was a better movie overall than "Raise the Titanic" (also a favorite movie having a great score).

Here's a movie that I saw...and wondered even in the 1970's when it came on TV as: "What is missing in this?" Some good actors and they are lacking a real "sell job" on this.
The score has that run of moving along well. Legrand has had a few real good ones in his name...my favorite: "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968).

Thanks for posting. I've never heard the score outside of the picture before. If I recall correctly, this was one of MGM's final big "roadshow" pictures. I don't remember it doing particularly well. I do remember that Ebert gave it a rare 1-star (out of 4) rating. I remember the cinematography and effects looking as if they were supposed to be good, but really looking a bit tv-quality. Only the wide-screen gave it the appearance of anything but.
I was young when I first saw it, and my memory of it is somewhat of a film wrapped up in self-importance, but amounting to little. I always loved Legrand, and fortunately he would still have quite a few far better films (and scores) in him. His score here is probably better than the film deserved. Thanks again.

I always remember Admiral Rickover the father of our Nuclear Navy he gave us the capability to stay submerged indefinitely before you had their surface maybe every 24 hours or 48 Hours recharge your batteries and you've had to dive and then you had to get bunker oil to keep your diesel running the engine, nuclear submarine has the capability of staying underwater without refueling for 20 years the only reason you have to surface is food in R&R for your men but if you have to you can stay underwater indefinitely

It has always been one of my favorite spy novels incorporating the silent services of our great USN submariner fleet. That's why I'm so proud to do a new screenplay based on the movie and the great Allister MacLean. To pay my respect to his grand writing and bring it up to modern times. It's titled " I. S. N.A.I.W.E.R "Z" and my hope is that HBO, Showtime, Netflix or Prime Video will pick it up. Remember; “NO ONE CAN HELP YOU IN THE COLD OF THE ARCTIC NORTH”
