      Somebody's obsessed with Howard Hughes and his beautifully gnarly long fingernails. I wonder how did he scratch his rump with them?

    My favorite scene from this movie. For years when ever I moved and had to set up my AV Gear I always used this DVD and this scene to check everything was working.
    This I think was also the only sub movie that had a point of view in the control room where the camera did not face directly fore and aft but rather featured a "profile view"

    So you know, the ocean/submarine scenes were provided by the USS Ronquil, a U.S. diesel submarine. Apparently, the number on the conning tower (which can be used to identify it) was changed during the making of the movie.

      Was repainted to 509. What an amazing movie. I highly recommend you watch "The Man Who Makes The Difference" on TH-cam. It's a 1968 promo for this film about an amazing man and innovator, John M Stephens.

      Strange that her number is 509...the Nautilus was 571, that is the 571st United States submarine to be commissioned into the U.S.N. and she was the first nuclear powered submarine. Also her design is very reminiscent of the Skate class with 2 aft torpedoe tubes

    In spite of its tight plot and outstanding cast, I always thought this movie was somewhat boring. EXCEPT for this visual and musical homage to the ocean and the submarine!

      Axgoodofdunemaul You’re probably right, there’s people who love everything about it and others who see it as as a an overlong spy flick. I’m straight down the middle on it. I’ll bet if someone did a remake they’d know where to tighten the story up

      I read most of the available Alistair MacLean books before this came out - they wound up using about 40% of the original story, and the production was troubled - Paddy Chayefksy was writing the adaptation, but was fired when the Navy refused to cooperate if he was involved (he wrote 'The Americanization of Emily' which didn't portray the Navy circa D-Day in a favorable light). I had a really sinking feeling when I glanced at my watch in the theater and realized they were just going to slap a 'The End' on it it a few moments...

    This is a great portrayal of the diving of a post WW II submarine. The submarine used for the surface shots of the movie was the USS Ronquil, a diesel-electric Guppy IIA conversion of the Balao class submarines. I would really like to see how the set for the control center compared to the real thing. Did they really have that much room in the real submarine control center?

    If I am not mistaken, the boat shown is actually a WWII sub with a guppy conversion. The Argentinians lost one of these during the falklands war (ARA Santa Fe)

    In movies the order to dive is always given before all personnel are inside the sub and the hatches are secured. Is this accurate dive protocol or is it artistic licence?

    • @Del-Canada
      @Del-Canada 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was an oversight in the movie although I can't be sure. I am ex navy but never served on a sub. What you suggested would seem to be how it's done, secure hatches and make sure everyone is down below first.

      @@Del-Canada Not during WW2, they wanted to be able to dive as quickly as possible. Not sure how much of that carried over into the post war period.

    I am just sick of some of d comments made by some regarding movie,which is definitely a great movie.What some people must try and understand,a movie is made according to it's story.Some fans if there is no shooting and killing,then d movie is not good.It's d same with d acting by d leading actors,they r suppose to portray d character of d script,not themselves.There r some actors who r always d same in every role,however Rock Hudson was never like this,which makes him one of d most underated actors in Hollywood classic movies.He was a versatile actor,who was good in dramas,comedies, westerns and any role he chose to do.RIP.Rock Hudson!

    @AngryGoyim I think you're perhaps confusing feet, fathoms and metres - or just being silly. The MAXIMUM depth possible is (classified but probably) no more than 500m.
