I'm not a woodworker, I am an aerospace engineer (mech) and when you detailed the direction of woodgrain - even I knew to expect this ending. A woodworker would have gone completely insane watching this.
As a primarily lumber builder I can confirm. I had a wooden cuckoo come out of my mouth and a little wind up monkey was banging cymbals in my eyes almost the whole time.

SO in the terms of our axe head, the grain is going up and down, but the force is impacting it from its left-right. So basically, that axe head held zero strength/resilience for the impact it was going to be used for, as you can see the wood broke until it reached the grain.... Something like that I'm not a carpenter or woodworker lol. Let the woodworker correct me if he deems necessary (Tbh u could probably Google it, maybe I should've too)
I've been whittling with real soft wood for god knows how long but take this with a grain of salt because idk much about the big pieces of wood. Anyway there's not really a good way for the grain to go. Looking at the axe from the side (you see it like 🪓 this lol) if the grain goes the way he did it (up and down) its very weak to side/side and front/back stress. I think the best grain would be left to right but because the axe is curved and wood it'll still probably crack on the first swing or two.
@@therealPman219 if you wanted to do this properly to have it work you would need to have layers of timber with the grain alternating direction and create a laminate head. Then the axe head would be omnidirectionally strengthened. I hope that helps.

Yup. As soon as he pointed out the grain direction, I knew it was gonna split. Same reason a mallet is made with the endgrain for the ends...keeps the whole piece stronger & from splitting. Although, I thought it would just be the tip ofnthe axe that would break...not that the head would break in half.
Yeah this is the whole process. It is extremely simplified for gameplay purposes but every time you punch a tree it's like, it represents a lot of work

In all honestly this could actually be done, i belive in heat treating the wood by burn hardening it and using it as a spear to puncture the stump. Would take like a month tho. Probably easier to just blow it up tho.
As a woodworker, the spaghetti analogy is a perfect way to describe the anatomy of wood. At my school they did a very similar thing with a bundle of straws to describe how wood grain works. Smart man👍🏼
