The funniest part about this is that the mechanism makes it illegal in pool. You cant hit the cue ball twice in a row. Pro tip for smooth pistons. Make your piston the same diameter as the cylinder then sand with 1000 grit sandpaper on the lathe. This will make the piston sides smooth and give a better seal.
We went from "I accidentally gave Alexa a concussion, so he had to back out of chessboxing" to "I want to fire a billiard ball at Alexa's head like something out of Tom&Jerry"

Drill the hole before you turn your OD next time. The extra material adds rigidity to the work piece and you'll get a better, straighter hole. If you're going to use cutters in the lathe chuck, remember to lower the RPM to what the tool is rated for. That endmill was screaming.
ahhh good tip about hole first before turning. I cant change the speed of my lathe as i lost the manual and cbb to do the maths to work out what gear arrangment to use.....
@@Ididathing Also that looked like a carbide endmill? In all honesty for your setup I'd recommend HSS tooling, at least until you get that thing bolted down. The chatter is gonna eat your carbide tooling and probably just give you a headache.
The problem with doing it this way is that when the blank explodes and pushing out the piston, the ball has already started moving. I think it will be a lot more usable if you put a trigger on the pool stick.
Aleksa is such a lad. You're about to set off a dangerous explosive device and what does he do? Hide in another building and hope everything works out? NO! He's right there next to you lining up for the next Darwin Award. Top notch 10/10 friend.
It's..... a Ramset gun.... A .22 round in an actual gun is unlikely of killing an adult unless you shoot them in the eye socket. I don't think it's all that dangerous.
It's refreshing to see someone doing a build under conditions that a normal person can relate to, instead of those TH-camrs that use $400,000 in equipment and call it "DIY".
love your videos. I am a machinist, and watching you teach yourself the basics of machining is super fun, as in this video when you discovered the virtues of machine rigidity. I have some notes, but mainly I think you would benefit from using coolant with your lathe. when you were doing the barrel, a bit of coolant and a peck movement as opposed to constant force could help with heat, surface finish, keeping the drill from "walking" off- center, and chip management! ✌✌✌
I cringed a little when I saw the barrel bit. But it was cool to see him discover that one of the cardinal virtues of being a machinist is that you can make your own tools and replacement parts.

Pro tip for smooth pistons. Make your piston the same diameter as the cylinder then sand with 1000 grit sandpaper on the lathe. This will make the piston sides smooth and give a better seal.

Seeing the entire lathe bit has me astonished he hasn't gotten his apron stuck in the spinny bit yet turning himself into a full-size and brutal version of meatspin.
There's a video of that happening to an unfortunate fellow, but with a much (MUCH!) bigger lathe... Poor guy got damned near liquified.
I think the clip of Alex dancing barefoot in an apron on top of a running lathe is still the most dangerous thing he did here

Drill the hole before you turn your OD next time.
The extra material adds rigidity to the work piece and you'll get a better, straighter hole.
If you're going to use cutters in the lathe chuck, remember to lower the RPM to what the tool is rated for. That endmill was screaming.
Also looked like he might have tried to climb mill on it too. Plus all that stickout!
ahhh good tip about hole first before turning. I cant change the speed of my lathe as i lost the manual and cbb to do the maths to work out what gear arrangment to use.....
@@Ididathing look for a model number and I'm sure you could find the manual online.
That's what she said!
While you're at it, make the piston more aerodynamic so that it can be propelled through the air at deadly velocities.

love your videos.
I think it would be cool to add a shock absorber where when its getting about to hit the end it slows the piston down significantly
The best thing about watching his videos backwards is slowly figuring out how the holes in the ceiling got there
You’ll enjoy finding out how the 3d printer broke
Its like the movie momento, but with a bored engineer.
