worm charming (also known as worm grunting) is probably the weirdest sport ever. But I knew I had to try it. It was quite the experience!
I was legit pretty impressed that it even worked! Nature is neat.
If you're reading this, thank you! I actually so appreciate that you've taken the time to watch this video! :) I'll send you a worm as a token of my appreciation

I actually looked up a study on this, and apparently it isn't that the vibrations are similar to rain. Instead, the vibrations mimic those of moles, a major predator of worms. They know this because they tried simulating rain using a sprinkler and compared it with introducing a live mole. The sprinkler barely did anything, but the mole sent all the worms running for the surface. It works because the moles don't follow them up. They even played a recording of a mole digging, and it brought the worms up. The amplitude of the mole vibrations is also a close match to those of a worm grunter.
The study is Worm Grunting, Fiddling, and Charming-Humans Unknowingly Mimic a Predator to Harvest Bait.

The correct term is called, 'worm grunting'. It's a long established old Southern way of getting worms to come to the surface for harvesting. The worms come to the surface because of instinct. The ground vibration resembles a mole digging. The worms are trying to get away from the vibration. Moles eat worms.

We have done this all of our lives in south Georgia. We call it grunting for worms. We did not have a fancy stick. We used an old tobacco stick and a brick. You would rub the brick back and forth across the top of the stick. I haven't done that in years. It is easier to just go buy them now. But, when I was a child, you had to get bait however you could and this was one way. As I got older, I had a vibrating sander that worked well on the stick. It saved a lot of elbow grease. Anyway, I enjoyed watching.

We used to catch nightcrawlers by going out at night with a potato fork, jamming it into the ground and shaking it back and forth for a few minutes. If nothing came up, move to another spot. People also used to use electric devices, but every once in a while someone would electrocute themselves, so those devices were removed from the market.

Works best if you prep the ground first. Aerating the ground then spread manure and compost in a thin layer then raking the manure/compost in to the holes from aeration then water for 1 hour just before sunset then use the sticks. The vibrations mimic moles forcing worms to the surface then when they retun to the ground they find the compost/manure mixture and hang around to feed. We use this method as we like fishing and worms make great bait. After dark 9pm - 11pm if you water the ground for a bit then use the grunt sticks you can get night crawlers a larger worm as well.

The reason worms do this is because moles (their natural predators) make rhythmic sounds when digging. As an instinct the worms try and get away to avoid being eaten.
A bit ironic that we are using its means of escape as a way of catching them.
Also- ironic that the dune worm emerges when hearing rhythmic sounds to hunt, and actual worms emerge to escape from predators.

@@MrAsddasdasda in the video it may appear as if the worms are coming towards the sound- cuz they are emerging from the ground. But I promise that this is the scientific reason they do this.
