Mercedes C55 AMG Review - AMG's affordable sleeper hot rod - BEARDS n CARS

  • The C32 AMG was a pleasant surprise for me, and a fun sleeper alternative to other six cylinder performance cars at its price point. With this C55 AMG though, the ante is upped to the level you would more typically expect from a Mercedes AMG - big V8, effortless torque, and a penchant for eating rear tyres. But since this is an early 2000's Benz, the price still doesn't break the bank.
    That being said, its not without its issues, a glaring one for me being the amount of steering dead zone, at least on this particular car. So let's take a deeper look at the W203 generation Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG...

    As an owner I can say it's very reliable and enjoying car. In my opinion it steers very well for a Mercedes. Suspension and brakes are also spot on. And realize I was a Bmw enthousiast. Keeping a BMW running costed me a fortune. This little Amg is a gem.....trust me. No airsuspenion, cheap brakes and it just keeps running. Big bargain. Very underrated. Cheers from Holland.

    I love my C55 mostly 😁 My car has a Renntech tune with air box the secondary cats and resonator are deleted and it also has H&R springs and Blisten shocks. Speaking of performance my car has minimal to no dead zone in the steering and handles on rails thanks also to the Michelin Pilot sport Ps 3s. My car will also do 0 to 60 mph gps certified in 4.2. Now for the things I don't like about it. The mileage is horrible I average about 12 mpg if I baby it much less if I'm having fun. If you plan on working on it at say to replace the alternator or ac compressor you better be ready to disassemble the front of the car and don't even get me talking about the 16 spark plugs. The only reason why I still keep it around is the looks I get when I out run newer sports cars and honestly that's why I love it 😜

    As an owner, I would say you need to rev this car out a bit to get to its actual potential, and perhaps unleash the brute you felt was missing on this test. Past 4K rpm, this car comes to life.

    • @Leonardo555ZZZ
      @Leonardo555ZZZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree..the AMG M113 is a high revving engine,,it is not ''all torque'' , it is a balanced combination. And it really goes after 4000rpm.

    • @rowanbelindawilson8888
      @rowanbelindawilson8888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I agree as well - max torque kicks in at 4000rpm and max power at around 6000rpm, so the real fun is in that 2000rpm zone - engine loves it and feels so strong. Whilst I haven't experienced a "dead zone" in the steering, I do find it annoying that you do have to do a lot of steering through corners, when compared to the BMW 335i I have - beemer has fantastic steering, where you can keep your hands at 10 and 2 for almost all corners. The noise of the V8 just about cures any, and all pains though!

    • @Leonardo555ZZZ
      @Leonardo555ZZZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rowanbelindawilson8888 Very true ,,,I accept the BMW is a better steering feel ,,
      but having to adjust steering midway through corners in the C or CLK is sometimes indicative of worn front control arm bushes,,especially the upper / thrust arms. Might be worth checking them for play and damaged rubber.

    • @rowanbelindawilson8888
      @rowanbelindawilson8888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Leonardo555ZZZ Yeah, its more the amount of steering you have to do, car is in mint condition. My old Subaru wagon was the same - nice car, but you always felt you were turning the wheel all the time, The Beemer rack is a lot sharper with a lot less turn of the wheel, when driving. Makes it an easy car to push hard, The C55 takes a bit more effort to get the best out of it, but intoxicated by that buttery AMG engine note!.

    I just bought a C55 T today. 337,000 km (about 210,000 mls) on the clock. Yes, that is not a typo. But looking at the offerings on the interwebs it was also (by far) the cheapest C55 in the whole mainland of europe.
    Got it off the first owner who had the car serviced at mercedes every 10,000 kilometers. Full stack of papers with it. Looks and feels brand spanking new on the inside and outside. Bilstein shocks with H&R springs are the only "mod" he had done after the original set of shocks went bad. After I turned the key I already liked what I was hearing, after 30 minutes of driving I fell in love with that silver pig. My wife is now certain that I have been dropped onto my head a few times too often as a child when she saw what i brought back to our driveway. There may be some truth to this, as I went there to buy a set of AMG rims for one of my W124 off this guy :D Well, to my defense: I got the rims, too ;-)
    And I'm 43, so you might be right with your age suggestions. I sold my S4 B6 Avant a few years back that was a 2004 model as well. I personally think the Audi felt a lot more dated then the merc does. But that is personal preference I guess.

    Yes, quite an unusual car - by that, I mean, that they were produced in such small numbers {approx 4000 sedans and 500 wagons}, and didn't get a whole lot of recognition, at the time. Perhaps due to the fact that the M3 and Audi S4 were so well established?{not to mention crazy expensive}. When I started looking around for my first V8, I never expected to own a C55 AMG - unbelievable value, and no major mechanical gremlins. Purchased it, for the equivalent of around $6K pounds, with 85K miles on it and it is in fantastic condition, tight as a drum, and the leather interior has worn incredibly well. Will never be a track weapon, or the cheapest to run, but that engine..........

      Nice! I've replaced the alternator and done just about every seal that can leak oil - the only real issue with them. Front brakes and pads, are now due, along with spark plugs and may do a carbon clean, just to keep it running mint. Still pulls like an Ox, and I redline it every time I take it out {once its warmed up of course}
      The wife is still yet to be convinced. Ha ha

    No dead zone on the stearing of my C55. On the contrary. Maybe a weakness on the exemplary you tested (sorry for my english). At this stage the c55 is a much better buy. C32's suffer from rust problems much more than the W203 facelifted C55s because the latter are galvanized while the C32s were not. Also the powertrain is just not as robust as the C55. C55 also handles better, sounds better and looks better. Just make sure you get one with an LSD installed so you can put the power down or get that done yourself as the standard open diff in either car gets overwhelmed; especially by the C55 torque.
